Believe it or not, I am on day 19 of being sick. It is feeling like the slowest recovery process ever- the first week was a terribly sore throat, then it was a week of coughing, and now it’s all head congestion/sneezing. Physically, I feel much better than I did the first week. I have been able to run, although early last week my breathing was still feeling harder than usual (plus it was hot and humid early last week). By the end of the week my paces were getting back to normal, I just had to run with tissues and occasionally stop to cough. Regardless, I am happy that I got in my first full week of marathon training! My coach dialed down the intensity for this week, because there was really no way I could have done speed work on Tuesday.
Monday: 4 miles easy, core/hip exercises
I noticed that my vivofit measured 4.32 miles while my Forerunner measure 4 miles…after sharing this on instagram I learned that others have noticed this as well, but that we should generally trust the Forerunner which has GPS capabilities.
Tuesday: 4 miles easy
Wednesday: Strength training
Thursday: 4 miles easy, core and hip exercises
Friday: 5 miles with 3 at goal marathon pace
Saturday: 13 miles…this was my longest run living in my new house and so I explored some different routes which turned out to be very hilly! This is good because my race has hills, but comparing the elevation charts, I think these hills were more than I will have to worry about on race day.
From the Route 66 Marathon course map:
Sunday: Rest!
I’ve really been focusing on resting more than ever lately to try to get over this cold. I had a really busy week at work last week, so I tried to use the time I wasn’t working or running to relax. This meant blogging was put on hold. I’m not sure what this week will bring, but I am planning to be around more than last week!
Total miles: 30 (My first time hitting 30 miles this year!)
How were your workouts last week?
Have you ever had a cold that just wouldn’t go away?
Do you have a favorite Pandora station to listen to while you work out?
I’m linking up with HoHo Runs and MissSippiDipplin for the Weekly Wrap!
Alyssa @ renaissancerunnergirl says
Feel better soon! I found that running on more hilly terrain to train this summer in CT versus in the cut really increased my stamina so hopefully it will be for the best!
[email protected] says
Thanks! Yes, I definitely think there are alot of benefits to running hills!
meredith @ Cookie ChRUNicles says
I listen to that Pandora station too! (at least I think it’s that 90’s one, I am sure there are a bunch)…I am sorry you still don’t feel well but I feel like everyone I know (including myself and my son) had lingering viruses/colds over the last few weeks. Took me a little over two weeks to return to normal with my stomach bug. Awful! I hope you feel better this week.
[email protected] says
Thanks! Yea, I don’t think I have ever been sick for this long!
Michele @ paleorunningmomma says
Had no idea you’ve been sick this whole time still, totally sucks but at this point it can only get better! I need to check out that 90s pop station I think 🙂 feel better and congrats on the 30 miles!
[email protected] says
It has to just get better from here, right? 🙂 I feel like I am so used to being sick I’m gonna feel great when I am back to normal!
Mary Beth Jackson says
WOW! 30 miles and with a cold! You will be unstoppable when that cold totally passes! Sounds like you found a great training path in your neighborhood- that is nice! Keep up the good work and rest up! Happy Monday!
[email protected] says
Thanks! I am really hoping that running feels even better once I am no longer sick!
Susie @ SuzLyfe says
I’m so sorry that you are still recovering! So annoying, but at least, as you said, you were still able to train. And hey, there is nothing wrong with being little overtrained for hills, right? That way you can just scoff at everyone on marathon day.
[email protected] says
That’s what I figure:) I would rather be overtrained for the hills, for sure!
Sam @ See Sam Run says
I’m sorry you’re still feeling under the weather! Hopefully this week will bring some relief for you. I also took a blogging break last week due to feeling down about being injured. I did a few workouts including a great first time on the ARC Trainer, but it was nothing like a good run!
[email protected] says
I remember it was so hard to blog when I was injured. How do you write for a running blog when you aren’t running? But readers like to know what’s going on, so glad you gave an update today:)
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
Looks like you are getting some good training in despite being sick! Maybe its allergies?
[email protected] says
I was wondering that, but I definitely had more of a bug when it first hit me 2 weeks ago. So I keep assuming my current head congestion is from that, but who knows- maybe its both?
Marcia says
Oh man I’m so sorry that bug as hung on so long. The last thing you need during marathon training. Looks like a solid week, nevertheless.
[email protected] says
At this point its more annoying than anything! I am glad I can still run, but I just wish I wasn’t blowing my nose every 30 seconds:)
Laura @ This Runner's Recipes says
I hope you feel better soon! Great week of training despite not feeling your best! I definitely think it’s good to be overprepared for race day hills – then you’ll just breeze right over them.
[email protected] says
That is what I am hoping! Thank you:)
Lesley says
Oh ’90s pop. I have a playlist of pop music and it’s fun to go down memory lane.
[email protected] says
Its always fun to listen to old songs that bring back memories:)
HoHo Runs says
You had a strong week of training even with your cold. It’s time for that nasty thing to go away already! I’ve run the Route 66 half marathon twice (once in frigid temps). It is hillier than it appears, but you do get some flat portions. The whole is even hillier. Running in your neighborhood will be great training. That’s some hill in your pic! Thanks for linking up with us today!
[email protected] says
That is good to know! I did read some race reviews that talked about the hills. I do think those elevation maps can be deceiving, so I would rather be over-prepared for the hills!
Jamie says
I had a lingering cold earlier this summer… I couldn’t believe it since the weather was finally getting warmer and I ended up with a cold for about a month. I found saline nasal washes pretty helpful! I hope you start feeling better soon – and even being under the weather you had a great week of training!! Have a fabulous Monday!
[email protected] says
Maybe I will look for those! I haven’t been able to find any medicine that really helps. so at this point Im not taking anything expect nyquil so I can breath at night.
[email protected] says
Sorry to hear you are still feeling blah at times. I’m finally feeling better after being congested for the longest time it felt Good job still getting your runs in. That’s funny you saw a deer along your run and were quick enough to take a pic before he ran away. Do you live in the country?
[email protected] says
Haha I don’t live in the country but there are alot of wooded areas around here so the deer wander around in the early morning. This one was literally just standing in the middle of the street. Luckily it wasn’t a busy road!
Grace @ Diary of a Runniny Snail says
I totally feel you on the never ending cold. I am on Day 18 as well! I’ve almost just accepted the fact that I will have a runny nose forever.
Congrats on 30 miles!! My weekly mileage has definitely suffered the past couple weeks but it’s all about doing what we can with our circumstances:)
Hope you feel better soon!!
[email protected] says
Oh man, sorry to hear that you have had a never-ending cold too! These things are the worst! Mine started out as a terribly sore throat and I am just glad I am past that, because my whole body was achy, I was exhausted, and I missed almost a week of running. I hope that we both get over these colds soon!!
Victoria at Ice Packs + Races says
Yes! Unfortunately, I feel like I only get colds that linger for weeks, and they’re not fun in the least. I hope yours goes away soon! Congrats on an awesome 30 miles – training is only going to get better as you begin to feel more like yourself!
[email protected] says
Thank you! I definitely feel like this is the longest I have ever had to deal with a cold.
Tara @ Running 'N' Reading says
Ugh! I’m so sorry to hear that this thing, whatever it is, just WILL NOT go away!! Good job taking care of yourself and trying to get lots of rest; I know this has got to be frustrating, Lisa. Looks like you still had a really solid training week, so kudos to you for getting it done; I certainly hope things turn around quickly!!
[email protected] says
Thanks Tara! It’s annoying but I suppose it could be worse- I am glad I only missed a week of training and hopefully it will be completely out of my system soon!
Molly @ Motherhood and Marathons says
I’m sorry you’re still dealing with a cold! That stinks! I hope you feel better soon. And that’s awesome you’re still able to keep on training through it!
My workouts last week were pretty decent. My long run actually went pretty well and I’m feeling like this marathon might actually happen!
[email protected] says
Thank you! And glad to hear your training is going well:)
Suzy says
30 miles for the week! That’s awesome especially since you’ve been so sick. I really hope you can shake this thing. Being sick in the summer is the worst!
[email protected] says
It’s so annoying!! I am really glad I have still been able to run, but i have races coming up and I feel like there’s no way I will be able to run race pace when I can’t breath well!
Amber says
Glad to hear you hit your highest mileage so far this year – pity you’ve been sick for so long though, dang! I hope everything clears up soon.
90’s Pop sounds like a pretty great workout station 🙂 I listen to any station that pumps me up – Calvin Harris, Pop & Hip Hop Power Workout Radio, Backstreet Boys. Sometimes Tove Lo too. Thank god for Pandora!
[email protected] says
Thanks! I hope so too.
Pandora is the best! I get so tired of listening to my iTunes music so its always fun to change things up!
Tricia@MissSippipiddlin says
Day 19 oh wow, I’m so sorry 🙁 But hey your workouts didn’t show it! 30 Miles that is awesome! I do hope though you get to feeling more like yourself this week. I bet it would be fun to find new routes near your house. I’m not a fan of hills at all BUT they are great workouts and you use different muscles which gives other muscles a break every once in awhile! That logic sounds good anyway! Thanks Lisa for linking up with us this week! I do hope you’ll join us again!
[email protected] says
Hills are definitely challenging but also so beneficial! I feel like in my neighborhood its hard to avoid them. I guess thats a good thing? Thanks for hosting the link-up!
Salt says
Holy hills! Great job on that run! Gotta love living in the county. 🙂
I hope you are feeling so much better ASAP. I’m sorry you’re sick…that is WAY too long to not feel well. 🙁
[email protected] says
Thank you! These hills are just a little different that my terrain down by the harbor:)
Annette @ Sweating Through Life says
I’m so sorry to hear you are still sick! Feel better soon!! Great job on the 13 miles while battling a cold; I’m not sure I would have been able to do it. It’s kind of fun exploring new routes in new locations, usually – I’ve been doing that lately too.
[email protected] says
Thanks! It is fun to explore new areas- makes the run go by faster!
[email protected] says
Hey Lisa- sorry to read that your cold didn’t get better yet. Sometimes they can stick around for a while. I’m amazed you still got 30 miles in in total with being sick, plus that hill training (!) You’re pretty tough! Feel better 🙂
[email protected] says
Thanks! I can’t believe I’m still dealing with this cold, but hopefully its on its way out now!
Sheena @ Paws and Pavement says
Good job on your workouts while being sick! I haven’t been running because the smoke coming from the Washington state is so thick here and the reports recommend to avoid outdoor activity.
[email protected] says
I’ve heard its been bad around that area! I hope it clears up soon:/
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
Congrats on hitting 30 miles! I have recently been hovering around there too. I realized it’s much easier to get to 30 when you actually do a double digit run hehe.
I am so sorry you are still sick. 🙁
[email protected] says
Yes when I do a double digit runs its much easier to move closer to that 30 mile/week range! Before I was stuck around 20 because my long runs were not very long.
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
Same here girl. We are getting there!
cheryl says
I am sorry that you have been so sick. I had a cough that lingered for a LONG time this winter. I hope you get well soon! PUSH THOSE FLUIDS!
[email protected] says
Thank you- never ending colds are the worst!
Sue @ This Mama Runs for Cupcakes says
Oh I feel for you. When I was sick for 6 weeks it was miserable! I’m staring to get a cold right now…the boys brought it home. I’m hoping I can ward it off but we’ll see. Glad you are feeling better!
[email protected] says
I know you can relate! I hope that you don’t get sick…fighting something off during marathon training is so hard!
Nicole@thegirlwhoraneverywhere says
Aww, my friend-feel better soon! That’s a long time to be sick! And…who gets sick in summer?! 🙁 That is very unfair!
You still had a great week though…those hills are CRAZY! GREAT job! I also like to train harder than my marathon 🙂
[email protected] says
Thank you- I agree that getting sick in the summer is just not fair! Especially at the end of summer when Im trying to make the most of it.
Kristina says
Oh no, day 19 of being sick! That is awful. I hope you’re able to kick this thing and get back to feeling like yourself soon. No one should be sick for that long!
Congrats on your longest run in the new house and hitting 30 miles! 🙂
[email protected] says
Thanks so much!
Natalie says
Every time I read the title of your training week, I start singing “Get your kicks on Route 66!” Too funny!
But seriously – feel better!!! Get more sleep if you can. I am so sorry you have been sick for so long!
Great job with your running and exercises! And hooray for 13 miles in your new neighborhood!! #boom
[email protected] says
Thank you! Haha now I will get that in my head every time I talk about the marathon!:)
[email protected] says
Congrats on the 30 miles this week! I had colds before that just wouldn’t go away. I had one last year that lasted 3 months. Now I take Vitamin C after almost every run
just to strengthen my immune system afterwards. I really hope you’ll feel better soon! Respiratory issues are so frustrating when you’re a runner.
[email protected] says
Thank you!! Its finally starting to go away very slowly…
