This is not the type of post I was hoping to be writing today, but blogging about running means sharing both the good and the bad, right? I started to have some foot pain on Thursday, so I haven’t run since then. Before I get into all that, here is how my week of workouts looked:
Monday: 3.6 miles easy, 2 sections of Pure Barre Tone in 10 (arms/abs and thighs/seat I think)
Tuesday: 6 miles with fartleks
Wednesday: 3.2 miles + 30 minutes Body Pump On Demand
Thursday: 4.2 miles easy + this core workout
Friday: CXWORX On Demand + 15 minute walk
Saturday: 60 Minutes Body Pump On Demand + 30 minutes Body Flow On Demand
Sunday: 30 minute Yoga for Injury Prevention
Total: 17 miles
Walked: 21 Push-ups: 4 days
Yearly Total: 1060/2016
So my week was going well and I was really enjoying all the supplemental workouts I had been trying out. I did notice my foot felt a little off on Saturday after the race, but it went away and felt fine until Thursday. I cut my run at 4 miles because it just didn’t feel right, and haven’t run since then.
Do you ever feel like running injuries are contagious? I feel like I have read from at least 5 blog friends lately that they have had foot problems over the past few months. Luckily, most came and went relatively quickly so I am hoping mine will do the same. I am surprising relaxed and optimistic about this, even though I did miss out on a couple days of great running weather.
I feel like it’s probably a good time (mentally and physically) for a break anyway. I have done 4 races in 2 months and have been building my mileage consistently all spring. I’ve managed to go over a year without any injuries so I want to give my foot time to rest and heal before jumping back into anything.
So what happened? I don’t really know. I’m sure that racing in my lightest shoes contributed (although I have been wearing them for years and have done up to 12 miles in them). I also think that transitioning to sandals lately has been a factor. While there are symptoms similar to plantar fasciitis, I really don’t think that’s it. Or maybe that’s what it could turn into if I don’t deal with it now. I have had similar problems twice in the past- the first time I was training for the Raleigh Marathon and using massage and KT tape it went away in a week or so. The next time was due to walking all over NYC in uncomfortable sandals. Again, went away in less than a week.
I track the mileage on all my running shoes, and they are all at less than 250 miles (other than one pair which is at 350 but I haven’t worn them in a few weeks).
I’ve been stretching and rolling my calves, soaking my foot in Epsom salt, and using KT tape. I have also tried to stay off my feet as much as possible. This is weird for me because one of my 2016 goals is to move more, so seeing my Vivofit at such a low number makes me feel like I should go walk around. I had walked on Friday morning but later realized it was probably best to just stay off my feet for a couple of days.
I’m planning to try to see my chiropractor tomorrow, and take things from there. Today (Sunday) I haven’t felt it at all but we will see what happens when I am on my feet more tomorrow.
That being said, I am probably going to be pretty quiet around the blogging world for the next week or so. On Wednesday I am traveling for work, then I head to NY for a wedding weekend, and have a lot of busy work stuff going on the following week followed by a visit from Rob’s family. I think the best plan is to focus on everything else I have going on and not worry about blogging or running for a bit. However, I will have my 10 miler recap up tomorrow!
P.S. I really hope that running injures are NOT contagious and that no one else starts having foot problems after reading this post!
Thanks to Holly and Tricia for hosting the Weekly Wrap!
Have you ever injured your foot from running or wearing certain shoes?
How were your workouts last week?
Do you ever feel like running injuries are contagious?
meredith @ cookie chrunicles says
I know we have chatted about this but I do hope it is feeling better! I have been avoiding my sandals all weekend and going with sneakers instead during the day because I do think the flip flops can play a role in how our feet feel! they are not good for walking around and can alter how we walk. ugh. also, maybe you hurt it by compensating on that foot for something else? Although nothing else was bothering you (like your hip or knee or whatever) so that doesn’t really make sense here. I think kt tape works wonders so maybe that will do the trick combined with the extra rest. I hope to see you on Thursday!
Michele @ paleorunningmomma says
Wearing flip flops bothers by feet but I doit anyway! It’s probably a combination of all the things you mentioned, and racing a bunch could just be a bit much overall since we push so hard in races. Hopefully it’s back to normal soon, feel better!
Sue says
I have had Plantar Fasciitis twice, and it is not fun! The Podiatrist told me that flip flops are the worst thing to wear, but we all wear them. Maybe the reason you think the running injuries are contagious, is because people have changed their footwear to flip flops, and also upped their mileage due to better weather. I hope you are on the mend soon.
Susie @ SuzLyfe says
I don’t think that they are contagious, but I do think that we all are in similar boats, so that contributes to the coincidence! Good luck at the chiro, I hope it is just a misalignment or something!
[email protected] says
Ah man, that stinks about your foot. My sister has been having foot pain too. Maybe it is contagious. And it wasnt from her sneakers either. It was wearing a pair of dress shoes for work.Hopefully it will feel better soon and it is not anything serious.
Sarah @ BucketListTummy says
Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear about your foot pain! Hopefully some time away will help. I’ve gotten pain on one side of my foot from old shoes before, so I’m a true believer in switching them often!
Karen says
Sorry to hear about your foot issue. I have definitely had issues related to wearing other, less supportive shoes like flip flops. It was interesting to read about your other workout activities such as Pure Barre Tone and Body Pump. I haven’t tried those but will check them out. Wishing you a speedy recovery!
Kristina says
I hope your foot starts feeling better soon! You’re taking such a smart approach by resting the foot as much as possible. My fingers are crossed for you that the pain goes away in a week or less!
Cori @ She's Going the Distance says
Sorry about the foot pain! At least it sounds like a great week to take a break. And i don’t think running injuries are contagious, however a few of the normal blogs i read the girls are injured, so it makes me extra cautious and yeah, possibly superstitious.
Meranda@Fairytalesandfitness says
Oh I do hope this foot problem goes away soon. I think mine is finally gone. I really do think a pair of uncomfortable dress shoes contributed to my pain.
Laura @ This Runner's Recipes says
Noooo not your foot! I hope it feels better soon and you are being so smart and prudent to rest it. Feet are nothing to mess with! But seriously even if it’s not contagious, that’s just a creepy coincidence that so many of us have had feet issues in such a short time frame.
My podiatrist told me to stop wearing shoes with poor arch support, namely no flats or flip flops, and then I do a series of foot strengthening exercises with a resistance band. I really hope you feel better!
Lesley says
I sometimes do that too, and I think it’s psychological. It comes and goes, and I know it’s not PF because it’ll randomly hit after dinner. I stretch my feet out whenever I can, and I chalk it up to my mind playing tricks on me. Like tapering and phantom pains.
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
What kind of foot pain is it???? I have a rip roaring case of PF right now! I haven’t run since Saturday. I had that heel pain in the morning for about a week, then stretching made it go away for like 5 days, then BOOM Friday I woke up with PF! I am pissed! We hiked because holy hell we are in RMNP so I had to hike, but now my hikes are done and tomorrow I will be home and I have an appt with my chiro too! I hope it goes away fast. Yesterday morning it hurt sooooo bad now this morning it does not hurt near as badly so that is good. I try to be optimistic…. I hope your foot thingy turns out to be nothing and the rest will help it go away. Keep me posted! I didn’t blog about my PF yet since I have been on vaycay and mainy did some pre written posts. No time.
Sam @ See Sam Run says
Oh no! I hope your foot feels better soon. I get some slight foot problems if I wear my PureFlows/Cadence too often or for too long, but like you with a little KT Tape and some extra rolling it seems go to away fairly quickly. While your next couple of weeks sound busy, enjoy them! Weeks like that always go by in the blink of an eye.
Tricia @ A Couple of Dashes says
I hope you start feeling better soon! I’ve had the same issue with sandals without support causing foot issues for me. I’ve started wearing Birkenstocks and they’ve made all of the difference!
Lauren says
Girl, I’m knocking on wood for no injuries. Flip flops probably don’t help at all. I wear my Birkenstock sandals a lot which have more arch support now in the summer and try not to live in flipflops like I used to.
Alyssa @ renaissancerunnergirl says
I’m sorry about your foot, but the title of your post drew me in because so strangely, I’ve also been having a few issues with my right foot even though I haven’t mentioned it on the blog. I think I just rolled it in a pair of non-running shoes that don’t fit right though!
Karen @ Fit in France says
I have been injury free for several years, since I got orthodics. I am in between training cycles, pretty much doing what I felt like. Speed work one day. Hill repeats the next. Yoga the third day and BOOM ! I pulled something during downward dog, lower calf.
I wanted to start training for my fall marathon but I immediately took time off. I didn’t run for a week, which was a huge thing for me ! I immediately went to the doctor, had an ultrasound and am seeing the sports doc tomorrow but I feel kind of stupid now, because it has gone away. I took it easy for 3 weeks and now it seems like it is back to normal.
But I agree, switching to sandals could have an effect….
Hope a little rest will help !
Suzy says
I DO NOT wear flip flops anymore ever, and I don’t wear shoes that aren’t supportive, either unless it’s just for a few hours in the evening on date night or something. I also wear Birks around the house. Maybe everyone is getting foot injuries because the weather is getting nicer and they’re wearing less supportive shoes? And maybe that’s why it feels contagious!
Tricia @MissSippiPiddlin says
I don’t know about contagious but I think can get to thinking so much about something til we invite it in, ya know. What I want to know is how do you get it out of your mind?
I really should track the mileage in my shoes but I don’t. 🙁 I have about 4-5 pair I can run in and I just swap out a lot. Enjoy the rest of your busy week Lisa!
Ana says
Ouch!! I hope our foot feels better… In my head Starbuck cups hold magical healing powers within them, so I’m hoping the same is true for you!
Running injuries better NOT be contagious through blogosphere… you are the 5th blog I’m reading about foot pain!
Pam says
Ahh, foot injuries. My foot was acting out a week ago so I took time off from running for 7 days. I am now back at it and hoping it will hold up. I agree that it almost seems like foot injuries are contageious, as the number of bloggers writing about foot pain seems huge. Hope you are doing better soon. By the way, you may want to try a supportive sandal. I now rarely wear anything but Oofos or Vionic, but designed by podiatrists that give you arch support. Not the prettiest, but they help my feet.
Sarah @pickyrunner says
Oh no! Fingers crossed there’s nothing serious and that you’re running again soon. I definitely notice a difference when I start wearing sandals more frequently, so hoping for the best for you!
Rachael @ Catch Me if You Can says
but for real it seems like injuries spread like the plaque! luckily i dont have one right now and will do everything in my power to keep it that way after seeing your post! get to feeling better soon, nice job with the KT tape I still struggle with getting it on just right
Kristy from Southern In Law says
I SO feel like running injuries are contagious! It seems like I’ll hear one of my friends have some sort of injury and then before I know it, a few weeks roll around and I’m hobbling around too! A couple of weeks ago I had achilles tendonitis and my best friend text me on the weekend to say “apparently we have matching achilles…. tendonitis for me too!” and she never gets injured!
Hopefully this injury clears up quickly and you’re back to feeling normal ASAP! Rest is definitely so important so forget about your step count! With my achilles I literally had to take two weeks of doing absolutely nothing (save a couple of days riding the stationary bike for 20 minutes as that didn’t effect it at all) and it was frustrating – but so needed as now I’m perfectly fine!
Jennifer @ Dashing in Style says
I also hope running injuries aren’t contagious! I do think you’re on to something about walking around in sandals/unsupportive shoes. I know I shouldn’t but I just don’t want to wear socks and shoes in summer. I should look into supportive sandals. Hope your foot is back to feeling better soon!
HoHo Runs says
I hope whatever it is, is short lived. I’m coming back from a foot injury and still have occasional lingering effects. It seems that a lot of bloggers have foot problems right now. The older I get, the more picky I get about my shoes. The sandals I do wear are Alegrias. They have fantastic support. I swear when I had Achilles problems, I wore the same pair of shoes to work for two years. Not kidding. I’m hoping after a little rest, your problem will simply vanish! Thanks for linking with us Lisa!
[email protected] says
I feel like this post is specific to me and my wonky foot issues! I hope I didn’t give mine to you! Maybe it’s a tendonitis issue, which mine almost always is although the symptoms can sometimes mimic PF or lead to PF. Hope you feel better!
Debra @ Happy Running Sole says
Sorry to hear about your foot pain. Glad to see you’re taking some time off and giving your foot some TLC. Hope it feels better soon!
Sarah says
I’m sorry to hear this Lisa! I did have PF once before but it healed itself pretty quickly with some rest. I work in a science lab so no flip flops for me, and once I’m home I’m mostly barefoot. I’ve had so many injuries over the last couple of years and after analyzing my gait, flexibility, muscle strength and finding all my weaknesses I’m only surprised that people aren’t injured more! Running is so hard on our bodies – and long distance put so much repetitive stress that if one little thing is out of whack it can lead to injury. Hope your chiro helps you out.
