It’s been so long since I did a thinking out loud post that I actually looked back and the last time was December 24th which means it’s been over two months! I usually save these kinds of posts to write the night before (rather than draft it over the weekend) and I just don’t have the energy to write a post by the end of the day lately. However, this week I have felt like there are a few things I would like to complain about so I figured I might as well use this opportunity to vent a bit!
1. I feel like it’s been raining non-stop for days. I am not sure how those of you who live in areas where it rains all the time don’t get super depressed. I just feel like I am in a better mood when the sun is out. On my walk to my car after work yesterday I got completely drenched because my umbrella kept getting turned inside out and apparently my boots must have holes in them because my socks ended up wet. At least I was wearing my PRO Compression socks!
2. At least the snow has melted! This picture was from Wednesday morning (the last of the snow on our lawn) and by Wednesday night it was gone! I guess all this rain is better than more snow.
3. When I drive to work I usually pass through the Towson campus. Seeing all the students walking to class in sweatpants and hoodies makes me SO jealous. I wish I could wear those kinds of clothes to work!
4. Not sure if this is related to the dreary weather we have had but I have been going to bed this week at a crazy early time, even for me. Like in the 7:50-8:20 range. I am always in bed by 9 but I think this is getting a little ridiculous! I think part of the reason is that Rob is getting over a cold so he has been going to sleep earlier so I figure I might as well do the same, especially since I get up so early.
5. Mornings lately have been rough, even though I have been getting plenty of sleep. On Tuesday morning my flat iron died. So I haven’t been straightening my hair this week because a)all the rain and b)no flat iron means that it would be pointless to even try.
6. Yesterday morning I did a strength workout and I have been working on pull-ups using my pull-up bar that I got for my birthday. I was starting to put some of my weight on it when it came off the door! I have no idea why or how but part of the rubber from the bar stuck to the door frame and the rest of the bar just fell. It was pretty scary and I was just glad I didn’t have all my body weight on there.
7. My lack of coffee lately probably hasn’t helped as I am dealing with all these morning issues. Tea just isn’t the same.
8. Totally off topic but I absolutely hate Gmail passwords. I have a personal and a blog account, and I can never remember either one. I store my passwords on my computer and phone so I never have to type them in. Then I randomly get logged out and have to sign in and request a new password. Which makes me more likely to forget it again. And the cycle continues.
9. Lately I have felt like there is static cling EVERYWHERE. Does anyone else have this problem in the winter? I use dryer sheets but I don’t feel like they work. When I go to fold my clothes they all stick together.
10. Hopefully my irritable mood is just tied to the weather! Maybe once the sun comes back things will improve. I felt like I had my best runs in awhile on the days when it was a little warmer and I got to see the sun, so it’s very likely.
How would you describe your mood this week?
Any recommendations for a new flat iron?
Do you feel like you sleep more when the weather is dreary?
Thanks, Amanda!
Amanda says
Ugh I hear ya on the weather affecting my mood! Seasonal depression is no joke and it definitively happens to me. Bring on the sun and warm weather pleeeeeez! Thank goodness for running endorphins…although running inside on the treadmill isn’t quite the same even though I’m one of those weirdos who doesn’t hate the treadmill 🙂
I have a Chia ceramic flat iron that I love.
Hope things start looking up for you soon! At least it’s almost the weekend!
[email protected] says
I do think any running endorphins are better than nothing but there is something about running outside that just makes me feel so much better:)
meredith @ Cookie ChRUNicles says
it rained a ton yesterday and it definitely annoys me! the coffee thing is definitely not helping you – ugh! let’s just hope it stays warmer and no more snow for the season. and yes to early bed time!
[email protected] says
I am seeing some warmer temps for the next few days but I have a feeling winter isn’t really over. I also hope now more snow, at this point its just no fun anymore!
Michele @ paleorunningmomma says
number 1 = my thoughts literally every time it rains! I dread having to go out in the rain, I find it one of the worst annoyances but hate complaining about it because it’s just rain! But it seriously impacts my mood, and I even get a headache if it’s a very low pressure system. lol I’m a nerd! Also I think I’ve written about flat iron stuff on TOL a couple of times 🙂
[email protected] says
I get headaches from the rain sometimes too! Or especially right before it rains. And I feel like I am constantly complaining about something when it comes to weather, so I guess rain isn’t too bad…but after several days in a row I had enough!
Susie @ SuzLyfe says
I eat more when the weather is dreary. Link nommmmmms. It isn’t too bad here recently, but yesterday snow was swirling in the air like CRAZY. I don’t think we got too much accumulation, but it was just obnoxious lol.
I hope that you will link up with the Running Coaches’ Corner today!
[email protected] says
I definitely crave different foods when it’s rainy. And after a few days of crazy winds it made me feel bad for you guys in Chicago who deal with that all the time!
Sam @ See Sam Run says
I feel just as frustrated with the weather here! It’s either freezing or just warm enough that we get freezing rain instead of snow. It definitely has played into my moodiness lately!
Oh Towson, it makes my heart happy! (moving in 2 months and 22 days, but no one’s counting right?!) I wear my Towson sweatpants so often!
I’m so sad to see your Chi died – That’s the worst! I’ve had mine since my senior year of high school so I think its day is coming.
[email protected] says
I think freezing rain is worse than snow! At least snow is pretty and you can usually run in it. Your move will be here before you know it!
Laura @ This Runner's Recipes says
There’s days where the rain gets to me but cold weather and snow bothers me the most. Although this week the rain broke and I’ve felt so much more energetic. I hope your week looks up soon!
[email protected] says
I don’t mind a little bit of snow, or once in awhile a bigger storm that gets us a few days off work (although not like the one we had in January- that was too extreme!) I just feel like I need to see the sun every few days and not get drenched every time i go outside.
Morgan @ Morgan Manages Mommyhood says
This rain is the absolute worst. We had a crazy thunderstorm for 3 hours last nights, which of course meant my scaredy dog was a hot mess. No fun.
[email protected] says
Oh no, that’s terrible! I hate when storms are so loud they wake me up at night. Although I would much rather be home during a storm that out anywhere.
Alice says
Well I live in the UK where it rains a LOT and I can tell you that the rain messing with your mood is a real thing! It always takes me a while to realise why I am feeling so tired and generally pissed off and then it comes to me… oh wait, because it hasn’t stopped raining in several weeks….!
[email protected] says
I couldn’t imagine dealing with so much rain! I don’t mind a day here or there but day after day can really get to me!
Rachael @ Catch Me if You Can says
sounds like you just need a good dose of vitamin d! a nice weekend soaking up the sun and warmth is just what you need! scary about the bar falling off the door, good thing it didnt hit you in the head or anything!!
[email protected] says
Yes, you are so right! And now the sun has been out and I got in a good run so I am feeling better already:)
Sarah @ BucketListTummy says
I can totally relate to the weather affecting my mood. Even when it’s dreary and there is no sign of the sun, I feel like my mood suffers. I’ll take extra Vitamin D those days 🙂 Spring is just around the corner though so hopefully that means warmer weather and more sun! I hope the rest of your week gets better 🙂
[email protected] says
I also hope that warmer weather and more sun will be here soon!
Amanda @ .running with spoons. says
I definitely find that I’m a little more sleepy in the winter months, and I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that it gets dark out so early. When it’s dark at 5, 8pm starts feeling like 11. BUT! spring is coming soon! Just a handful of weeks left.
[email protected] says
Yes, exactly! All the darkness gets to me for sure.
Alyssa @ renaissancerunnergirl says
Static cling is the bane of my work existence! Especially winter coats, wool dresses and tights and cardigans all together…
[email protected] says
Ugh all of those things give me chills just thinking about the static cling!!
Emily says
Wow, it would be weird to have rain for days in the winter time. O_O Kudos on the pull-ups… I’m working on pull-ups this year too!
[email protected] says
I guess my pull up days are over now that my bar broke, just when I was starting to improve a bit!
Hilary @ Embrace the Neon says
I’m so sorry, what a rough week! Hang in there. I’ve been feeling pretty beat up this week, but that’s just due to a series of rough workdays (or months). Hope you guys get some sun soon!
[email protected] says
I hope that your week has improved as well! Hopefully you get to relax a bit now that the weekend is here:)
Sarah @pickyrunner says
I just got a new mac at work and I’m having the hardest time remembering all my passwords to get it set up again. And the rain. There is THREE FEET of water in front of my building right now. I couldn’t even drive me car to Physical Therapy this morning so it cost like $60… oh well. Spring is coming at least!
[email protected] says
That is crazy about all the flooding near your apartment! I guess I am not all that surprised between all the rain we have had plus all the snow melting.
Lesley says
We got a lot of rain last spring, but what helped was we were in DST already. I don’t know how people in Seattle deal with so much rain in the winter. We had a big storm on Tuesday, but we need the rain wit our hot and dry summers.
[email protected] says
Rainy days in the winter are definitely rough!
Jen B. says
Hahaha your entire post relates to how I’m feeling about everything!! I’m sick of rain/cloudy days in my life, I had the worst static cling the other day when I was wearing a cute new shirt, I hate Gmail passwords with a passion, and I get so crabby when I think back to my college days when I didn’t have class until 10:00 and I could just stroll in with sweatpants and a hoodie!
[email protected] says
I’m glad you can relate, but I am sorry you are feeling the same way! Hopefully between it being the weekend and the sun coming back out things have improved for you!
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
I am always worrying about my pull up bar coming off the wall! I am so sorry that happened to you, at least you are okay!
It is raining here a ton too.
I would also love wearing comfy clothes to work! If only!
[email protected] says
Be careful with your pull up bar! It was kind of scary.I’m not sure if I put it on wrong this time or what, but it’s felt so secure in the past. I’m kind of sad because now I can’t work on my pull ups anymore!
Hollie says
I was just talking to someone about how much the weather was affecting my mood as well. It’s hard because it hasn’t been consistently anything. It hasn’t been consistently good or bad just meh. It’s hard to believe how fast the last few months have gone.
[email protected] says
Exactly!! I keep thinking that spring is right around the corner when we have warmer weather but then it gets really cold again. I feel bad complaining because the winter really hasn’t been that bad this year.
Christina says
Okay you totally need to get back in coffee. I cut it out for like 4 months and it sucked. I felt so much better when I put 1 back into my routine. And you need some static spray at home!! Or you can run a metal coat hangover through static fabrics which helps break down static as well.
[email protected] says
That is a great tip, thanks of sharing! And I have about 4 more weeks without coffee- I gave it up for Lent. It will feel so good to start drinking it again!
Christina says
Oops sorry didn’t realise you gave it up for Lent – that’s awesome. That first cup will taste amazing!
Suzy says
Hey grouchy pants! LOL! Love it. Okay so living in the PNW has its perks (ocean, mountains, blah blah blah) but the grey foggy rain? The just above freezing temps? That last from October to April? KILL ME NOW. We are all hopped up on vitamin D supplements and antidepressants and we STILL can’t get out of bed. It’s brutal.
[email protected] says
I couldn’t imagine that kind of weather all the time! Hopefully you guys just take advantage of the perks so that the other stuff doesn’t seem so bad:)
[email protected] says
I have been so tired this wk too. It must be the weather. It was rainy here too all wk. I have a Paul Mitchell flat iron I got at a salon and I really like it.
[email protected] says
I hope you are feeling better now that it’s the weekend and the sun is shining!
Shawna says
allll the rain this week in NYC as well – so over it! thankful today is sunny, albeit so windy. i juuuust got a new flatiron since i’ve had mine for like 15 years (and it still works! i just figured it was time to replace). my original was a Chi and it was awesome and never died/went bad on me, so i replaced it with a new Chi, and this one is amazing too – the Chi Air 1″ Ceramic Tourmaline (in teal this time, b/c why not??). have a great wknd!
[email protected] says
Thank you for that recommendation!! And we had some crazy winds late last week too- not sure which was worse, the wind or the rain!
Michael Anderson says
I am actually pretty cool with all the rain – I already run in anything, so who cares if I get a bit drenched walking from my car in the morning? Apparently not me – but then my hair isn’t a concern.
Funny you talk about going to bed early – especially with sinus infections running through Lisa and my younger son Chris, it has been earlier to bed. I get up at 3:45, but it is usually close to 11PM or so before I go to sleep, but Lisa has been falling asleep on the couch around 8:30 or so a lot recently! So we go get ready for bed and I’ll either read on the Kindle or play a game on the PS Vita (who says boys ever grow up?) and have found myself dozing a lot between 9:30-10PM lately! Still really not enough sleep I suppose, but more than I usually do!
And I think we definitely go to bed earlier in winter – tend to curl up after dinner rather than going for a walk or even just sitting outside with a drink … and all that coziness (especially if we turn on the fire) means earlier sleep 🙂
[email protected] says
For me the hardest part about running in the rain is getting started. If the rain starts when I am already out running I don’t mind it as much! And I think the rain bothers me more now because I have a longer commute (so more traffic when it rains) plus I walk about 3 blocks from where I park my car to my office. And on Tuesday I had a meeting off-site in the middle of the day which meant getting drenched walking to my car, plus I was wearing flats so that’s something else that’s not fun about the rain:)
I generally stick to an early bedtime all year long, but during the winter I definitely find myself curling up on the couch more or evening going to bed earlier to read. I guess the one good thing about DST will be having some more daylight after work to go for a walk or have a drink outside:)
Marcia says
No rain here, still too cold for that, but I’m officially over this winter. Our so called “blizzard” was a total non-event and we have almost no snow left. It’s been SO grey I know it’s getting to my mood. On the bright side, I saw my first robin today!
[email protected] says
It’s almost March so that has to mean that spring is just around the corner!
Gina @ hanzelboyzmama says
I feel ya. Some weeks are just a bunch of craziness. Rainy weather gets old fast. But, it’s FOR SURE better than cold and snow! 🙂
[email protected] says
While rest is good, sometimes I feel like the more I get the more I need. There is a happy medium for me. I think if I get 7.5 to 8 most nights on the days I don’t I’m fine. But let me get 9 or 10 a couple days in a row and I’m freaking worthless! You don’t even want to know how many days down here I could really straighten my hair without frizz. Maybe 5-9 out of the whole year with this humidity! Thankfully I don’t get the notion often!
[email protected] says
I think I prefer a happy medium too when it comes to sleep! If I go to bed before 8 I am usually up by 4am.
Sue @ This Mama Runs for Cupcakes says
Uggh, I’ve been totally irritable and I totally give credit to the weather. I’m totally ready for spring! I have always gotten new flat irons at Marshalls or TJ Maxx, they always have great deals on them!
[email protected] says
Oh my gosh so I actually realized way after I wrote this post that I had just blown a fuse in my bathroom! Ha! So my flat iron is still alive! But that is great to know for the day when it needs to be replaced.
