This past week was a really tough one for staying motivated. It rained ALL week. I think we had about 10 days of clouds/rain/cooler weather just when May arrived and we were expecting the weather to be warming up. Part of my problem was that I didn’t go into the week with a real plan, so each morning I woke up and wasted time considering what my workout for the day would be (usually while listening to the rain come down outside my window…). I had no desire to run more than a few miles anyway, so I guess it worked out ok. Also, by tacking on my strength training to a short run day, I had an extra day to do a longer Pilates workout.
I could have taken lots of pictures of the rain but it was just too depressing, and I didn’t want to get my phone wet.
Monday: 4.8 miles, core and hip exercises, PM: 30 minutes yoga
Tuesday: 3.2 miles and total body strength training
Wednesday: Pilates for Runners DVD
Thursday: 4 miles, core work
Friday: 3.2 miles, glute exercises
Saturday: 9 miles with a fast finish. FINALLY! A run with a little bit of sunshine! I started at a 9:30 pace and worked my way down to a 7:55.
Sunday: Rest
Total: 24.2
Walked: 25.1 Push-ups: 3 days
Yearly Total: 802/2016
Next week’s forecast doesn’t look great, but at least it will be a little warmer and there is one day of sun in there!
Do you have less motivation when it rains all week?
Does it feel like typical May weather where you live?
Do you have a hard time getting out the door in the morning without a plan?

I think we went 8 days without sunshine! It was crazy last week. It worked out well for me since I was recovering from the half but still – it was not nice at all! Today should be nice though!

Today wasn’t bad but still cool, cloudy and it rained a bit. I think last week was a good week for you to be recovering from your race!
Kristen says
This week was miserable for me as well. The days of no sunshine was depressing! It stole the little bit of motivation I did have. I did end up running yesterday and it was beautiful! I keep thinking of warm, sunshine-y positive thoughts ?
[email protected] says
I need to think those kinds of thoughts too! And remind myself that I will soon be complaining about the heat.
Susie @ SuzLyfe says
Chicago has no typical weather, it seems. We just kind of get what we get! This week was nicer out, and this weekend was lovely, but last weekend was heinous. I kind of give up on the whole enterprise 😀
[email protected] says
Yep, it’s been so unpredictable here too.
Kristina says
I definitely feel like we’re having typical, hot May weather down here. Being in Europe last week was such a nice break from the heat and humidity. The crisper air just puts an extra spring in your step!
Way to go on the 9miler with fast finish! Great way to end the week!
[email protected] says
I think we should trade places once in awhile:) I would love to be in the heat right now!
Kelli says
It has been miserable – rainy, cloudy, and cool here. I had three weekends in a row of racing in the rain. And we didn’t see the sun at all last week. Thank goodness this week’s forecast looks better. It has been a strange spring. Nice work on the 9 mile progression run!! Have a great (and hopefully sunny) week!
[email protected] says
It’s definitely been a strange spring, that’s for sure! Racing in the rain is no fun. Hope you have some good weather this week too!
Marcia says
I joke that I am solar powered because rain definitely takes a toll on my mood and motivation. Looks like you had a strong week despite the crappy weather! It’s supposed to rain all week here. So much for a couple of nice days.
[email protected] says
I think the nice days just feel like a tease lately. All this rain makes me realize how much I appreciate the sun!
Laura @ This Runner's Recipes says
Nice work on that fast finish 9 miler! May is supposed to be the end of rainy season out here snd so far we’ve only had a day of rain this month. In rainy season it seems like I’ll have weeks straight of running in the rain! I don’t lose motivation but it certainly is tiring. Although Seattle rain is never heavy rain. Hope you have better weather this week!
[email protected] says
I was thinking of Seattle weather when I was complaining about all the rain we have had! Not sure how you deal with so much rain, but at least that season is almost over for you!
Sarah @ BucketListTummy says
I bet the sun felt so good for your 9 miler after a week of rain. Hope this week you see more sun!
[email protected] says
Thanks- I hope so too!
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
Last week SUCKED and I fully blame the weather. My workouts and work were just so… dismal. But now the sun is shining so I think we will have a great week!
Nice work on your progression run!

I think we are all getting a little frustrated with this weather. We had a little sun today and I am hoping this week’s weather will turn out better than what is forecasted!
Alyssa @ renaissancerunnergirl says
The rain was definitely a bummer this past week in the Northeast especially since it’s been raining while I’m on vacation in Maine. I still run but it does mean less motivation for me too…
[email protected] says
Rain while on vacation is the worst! Hopefully you get some nicer weather while you are there!
Jen B. says
OMG last week in DC was freaking miserable! I was so excited Saturday morning when I saw bits of sunshine during my run! I don’t mind a little bit of rain or cloudy skies if it’s warm out, but I can’t do those conditions AND cold. No thank you!
[email protected] says
It was definitely the cold that made it even worse! I was freezing walking to my car after work on Friday. I even wore leggings and boots- definitely not typical May clothing!
Suzy says
Ugh your weather is gross! That’s brutal. We’ve had uncharacteristically warm weather lately. I did my 16 miler in 75 degree heat, and I was COOKING. But I’d way rather have that then rain. Rain is SO DEPRESSING. We get a lot of it here on the PNW. Good job getting those workouts in. It’ll pay off once it warms up and you blow by all the fair weather runners!
[email protected] says
I’m glad to hear you have had good weather, even if it’s a bit warm. Those warm runs are challenging but when you race in the morning and it’s cooler it will feel so much easier!
Tricia Vaughn says
It’s amazing how down you can feel with something as simple as rain and right on the other hand how uplifting we can become by seeing the sun! Great job on getting in yours. I do hope this week will not be as bad as the forecast says.
[email protected] says
I am usually not affected this much by the weather but I think I am just used to seeing the sun at least every few days!
Rachael @ Catch Me if You Can says
running when its raining is my biggest excuse to not go for a run, i hate getting all soggy. good for you for getting it done no matter what. The weather here has been crazy but we had the crazy flooding so May was off to a rough start to begin with! hopefully you will get clearer skies soon!
[email protected] says
It can definitely be tough to go out running in the rain. And flooding is no fun! Hopefully things clear up for you too!
Lesley says
We have a mix of rain and sun or clouds this week. It’s my recovery week so my workouts will be low key until the weekend.
[email protected] says
I hope you enjoy your recovery week! Congrats on the race!!
Jennnifer @ Dashing in Style says
I think all this rain is Mother Nature’s payback for the beautiful February we had! If it starts raining when I’m already out running, I don’t mind it. But I really don’t like heading out into the rain and then having wet socks and shoes the rest of my run!
[email protected] says
I feel the same way- I just don’t like heading out for a run when it’s already raining! I knew that we would be in trouble when we had that nice weather a few months ago. The weather has just been so unpredictable lately!
[email protected] says
For having it rain all wk it looks like you were still able to get some runs in though, so that’s good. I hate running in the rain too. I had to do that during a 5k last wk….Yuck!
[email protected] says
I don’t mind the rain as much when it’s warm out, but these cooler temps plus rain have been rough!
Laura @ Mommy Run Fast says
Last week was crazy! However, I was recovering from the Broad street race so it was probably for the best that I cut my training way back due to the rain. I’m sure the extra lazy days were a good thing. But thank goodness for sunshine again!
[email protected] says
Last week was a good week for cutting back and recovering!
HoHo Runs says
At least the weather perked up for your 9 miler! It’s just full on summertime here. Way too warm and humid. I am acutely aware that I am solar powered. My energy level is so low when the sun is not out. After a few days, I might as well stay in bed. Nobody would want to be around me at this point anyway. LOL. Ahhh…when the sun shines, all is right with the world. Thanks for linking with us Lisa!
[email protected] says
Yes things are definitely better when the sun is shining! I hope you have some good weather this weekend- I think the rain is finally supposed to stop here!
