Last week started out with some really good runs, but the end of the week was all about slowing down. I feel like I’ve been fighting a cold since we got back from Florida. Rob was pretty sick last weekend and I’ve just been trying to not get sick again. I ended up resting all weekend and now I guess I’ll see how this week goes. Does anyone else feel like they’ve gotten sick more than usual this year?
As I said in my January runfessions post, I am not sure I have learned my lesson about running when sick. So finally this weekend I decided to take some time off of running and working out to allow my body to rest. It had been awhile since I took a true rest day anyway. On Sunday I actually felt worse, like even if I had intended to run I don’t think I would have.
The weather this week was all over the place too. It was so warm on Monday, then went back to the usual winter weather for a few days, and then the weekend was warm again. I was kind of disappointed to miss out on warmer running weather this weekend because it looks like there is snow in the forecast for February.
Monday: 5 miles, core/stability exercises
This was a great run! I was able to go out a little later because I had a training that didn’t start until 9. I was nice running in the daylight plus it was in the mid 40s!
Tuesday: Strength training and mobility
This was my last week of my 4th phase of strength training. I always feel so accomplished when I make it through another phase!
Wednesday: 4 miles
Ran this one on the treadmill. I set up the iFit to take me on a run though Baltimore’s inner harbor, my old stopping grounds. It was really weird because google maps sometimes had me running through buildings! It was fun to run a familiar route like that.
Thursday: Strength training and mobility
Last day of Strength Training Phase 4! I’m excited to start on Phase 5 next week. I already got my next plan and have been reviewing the workouts. Now, my body just needs to fight off this cold…
Friday: 30 minutes spin bike
I knew I needed to get in some cross training so I hopped on the bike for 30 minutes.
Saturday: Rest
I must have needed the rest because even though I got a full nights’ sleep, I still took 3 hour nap on Saturday afternoon!
Sunday: Rest
Another lazy day, plus it was raining out. I had absolutely no energy to run and unfortunately felt worse than Saturday.
As I’m sure I’ve said before, this is a good time to cut back on the running anyway. It’s just frustrating to constantly have things that interfere with my schedule. I keep reminding myself that I’m not training for anything anyway, so it really shouldn’t matter. But it would just be nice to feel better and be able to get in my regular workouts, ya know?

I have definitely felt like I have been fighting something off – post-nasal drip, sore throat, etc … but I have managed (so far) to not get sick. My wife got it pretty bad and it lingered for quite a while, and the boys each had it somewhat over holiday break … but I have managed to avoid so far.
I have ended up taking more rest days as a result – two in a row late last week when I felt it coming on again. The key for me is actually getting more sleep when I choose to not run 🙂
We have heard about how much worse this year is than usual … it is really true from everyone around me at work as well! Hope you can stay more healthy for the rest of the year!

Virus’ are running rampant right now! My husband had the stomach flu last week. And my kids have had most of their classmates out sick. Ive been disinfecting like crazy so fingers crossed! Hope you feel better soon. The rest will definitely help you!

Thanks! Yea, I feel like everyone I am around is sick! At this point I just want to rest until it goes away once and for all!
Wendy says
I hope you are feeling better! I have seen so many really sick kiddos in my clinic this winter–it’s crazy! They even closed a high school around here because so many students were out with the flu. Let yourself heal and wash your hands like crazy!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Wow, that sounds pretty bad! I will definitely be resting up an sanitizing as much as possible!
Kimberly Hatting says
Ironically, I have stayed healthy. It’s crazy I didn’t come down with something with all of those outside miles I did for the run streak in such cold temps. Hope you’re feeling better!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Maybe that freezing cold air killed any germs you had:) I think that when I sick last month the cold runs made it worse.
Kimberly G says
I’m glad that you rested this weekend. I bet your body really appreciated that and hopefully it will help to fight off the cold. I think that it’s been a particularly bad cold and flu season so more people are sick than usual. I try to keep washing my hands like a crazy person in hopes that I won’t get sick!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I have been hearing that so many people are sick this year. Usually I am not one to get sick very much so this is really unusual for me!
Lacey@fairytalesandfitness says
Sorry to hear you have been fighting cold. Luckily I have not get sick this winter. It was really warm out last week and I got a lot f runs outside. I always feel guilty when I don’t take advantage of outdoor runs in the winter when nice days are very far and few in between.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thats so I felt when I skipped the outdoor runs this weekend! But I know Ill be glad I rested if I can get over this quickly.

Good for you for listening to your body! Sometimes it’s just not worth it to push through when you’re sick and just take it easy to let yourself heal. You get better so much faster!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I think I finally learned my lesson after last time!
Lesley says
I had a stomach bug in October, and then before Christmas. My allergies are also all over the place with this mild winter. I guess it’s one of those years where people get walloped with something, even when we’re not sick that often.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Yea it definitely sounds like everyone has been getting sick more than ever this year!
Marcia says
I hope I’m not jinxing myself here but I can’t remember the last time I was sick. Thankfully I did not catch the upper respiratory jazz the caveman had a few weeks back. I think the weather has been up and down for everyone lately. Our weekend was gorgeous 40 and 50s and today we have single digit wind chills with blowing snow. Ugh. Hope you’re feeling better and I love how much you’re enjoying the ifit feature on that mill!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I can usually go a year or more without getting sick, so this is pretty weird for me!
Laura @ This Runner's Recipes says
I hope you feel better! This winter has been rough for colds and flus. It is definitely worth resting to get better!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
It definitely seems like everyone has been getting sick this year!
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
Bummer about feeling sick. Hope it all clears!! My family has actually been exceptionally well…. where’s that wood to knock on??
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thanks! I hope you can all stay healthy!
Laura says
This has been a really rough winter for sicknesses! Hope you don’t get it. I think our bodies always appreciate a cut back week!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I agree, I think its a good time to take it easy anyway, as much as I hate taking time off!
Teresa says
Keep resting up so you will be ready to go when you do have something specific to train for!! Hope you feel better soon!!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I need to keep reminding myself that! Thank you!
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
I hope you are feeling much better! Sometimes our body just needs a little extra rest! Great job on your runs this past week!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thank you! Yes, Im hoping the rest will make a big difference!
HoHo Runs says
My kids always came home sick from being at Disney World in winter, which made for very interesting travel on some occasions. 😉 I think twice right now before going anywhere except work — and we disinfect like crazy around there. Hopefully with a few days rest, you’ll feel back to normal. Thanks for linking!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thanks! I definitely think the Disney trip brought whatever this is to our house. Time for it to go away now!
San says
It’s hard to take a break from training (I am always scared to take off more than a few days), but sometimes it’s necessary. I have been sick this winter (I am never sick!) and it has definitely put a damper on things… but I am trying to just roll with the punches.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Yep, I hear ya! I think this month has really taught me that sometimes its better to just back off. Im hoping a lighter winter will make for better spring running!
