Finally, summer is really here! While we can go ahead with complaining about the hot, sweaty, humid runs, at least we can still enjoy some cold treats to help us recover and cool off. As someone who is always cold, I tend to stay away from cold foods and drinks unless it’s really hot out. So today I am sharing some treats that I turn to once the weather really warms up.
5 Summer Treats
1. Iced Coffee
I tend to stick to regular, hot coffee unless its really warm out. When it’s too early to starts drinking alcohol, iced coffee is a perfect drink to enjoy after a hot run.
2. Smoothies
Smoothies are the one cold drink that I do enjoy year round, but more so in the summer. However, last week my blender broke. It’s a Vitamix and still under warrantee, so I sent it in for repairs. Right now I won’t be able to enjoy smoothies even though it’s the perfect time of year for them!
3. Beer
I’ve become really picky about when I drink beer these days. It’s usually either around the holidays (when I enjoy a few Christmas Ales) or in the summer. Each summer I end up finding a new beer of choice. 2 years ago I was addicted to Sam Adams Cherry Wheat Ale.
4. White wine
99% of the time I choose red wine over white. It needs to be a really hot day, and I probably need to be drinking outside, to go for white. But when the conditions are right white wine can be the perfect beverage on a hot summer night. Or day.
5. Ice cream/Fro-yo
Even though I have something for dessert almost every day, it’s not often that I go for ice cream or frozen yogurt. We don’t really keep that stuff in the house so it means taking a drive somewhere. I think that’s what makes it a real treat, is that we only get it a handful of times a year. There’s nothing like building a big cup of fro-yo with tons of toppings in the summer.
I’m thinking tonight would be a good night for white wine AND fro-yo. I think it’s well deserved after making it through another busy week;) Have a great weekend!
What are some of your favorite summer treats?
Do you enjoy cold foods and drinks year round or just in the summer?

I agree that wine and froyo are well deserved after a busy week! I hope you have a restful weekend!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Definitely! Thanks, you too!

Like you, I’m always cold. My work place feels like a walk-in freezer in the summer…which makes no sense. So, I”m gulping down the hot chai latte’s year-round. I love the smell of lilacs…but only as I pass by them (because the fragrance is so powerful).
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
My office is always cold too, so I bring hot coffee to work with me. When Im out and about its such a treat to enjoy an iced coffee!
AmyC says
I’m a year-round smoothie person too, but I love watermelon in the summer. It’s one of those foods I can’t stop eating if I know it’s in the fridge. 😉
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I almost forgot about watermelon! I will need to look for some this weekend.
Susie @ Suzlyfe says
All the froyo (especially eaten outside.). But you can keep your iced coffee. Now, frappuccinos are a different story!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Froyo is so much better when eaten outside. I think its been 10 years since I had a frappuccino! I keep things pretty simple when it comes to my coffee.
Deborah @ Confessions of a mother runner says
Ice cream is always a fan favorite and this year we are enjoying Rose wine which my hubs calls “summer water”. Have a great weekend
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Haha I like that! I never drink rose but Im sure its great in the summer!
Kimberly G says
I love frozen yogurt and smoothies! I like to enjoy both year round, but I do tend to enjoy both way more in the summer 🙂
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
The summer heat definitely makes both more enjoyable!
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
I love them all! They’re winter treats too!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Yes, very true! I think I just crave them all more in the summer!
meredith (The Cookie ChRUNicles) says
I’m so not a drinker but I totally love a glass of reisling in the summer!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Theres something nice about enjoying a cool, light drink when its warm outside.
Emily @ Pizza & Pull-ups says
Yes to all these treats! I love iced coffee all the time, but especially when it is warm.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I cant handle iced coffee when its cold out so I love this time of year for finally being able to enjoy it!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I’m with you, cold teats are for the summer! And I also don’t keep ice cream in the house . . . I was kind of tempted because I passed the ice cream place on my drive home last night, but I didn’t really need it then. And they were super busy!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Its so tempting when already out to stop for ice cream! If we had a place that was closer we would probably go much more often.
Meranda@Fairytalesandfitness says
I usually reward myself with a frozen Frappe after a long hot run!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thats a great post-run treat!
Suzy says
I like red over white too. On really hot days I’ll stick the red in the fridge for half an hour before I pour a glass. It doesn’t make it cold but it brings the temp up out of that warm state. How long is your Vitamix going to be gone for?
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I got an E-mail this morning that its on its way back! So hopefully I will have it in a few days.
Laura @ This Runner's Recipes says
I love beer in summer. Gin & soda water (not tonic, gross) with lime is another favorite summer treat. I keep meaning to make cold brew coffee now that it’s warming up!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I usually end up just buying iced coffee but last weekend I finally made my own at home. Its so much cheaper that way!
San says
Most of the same one’s are on my list….
I mostly enjoy cold treats/drinks in the summer. I usually prefer my drinks hot… but when it’s 100F outside, you change your mind 😉
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Exactly, who can drink something warm when its so hot out?!
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
I have been pretty hooked on iced chai lattes lately! I also can’t say no to ice cream – cookies and cream is my favorite.
Enjoy your white wine and froyo!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Cookies and cream is a good one! I usually go for mint chocolate chip. If ice cream is an option, its always hard to say no.
Hannah says
Going to a fro-yo place is definitely more of a treat than having it at home. The toppings are what make the fro-yo, in my opinion.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Definitely! The toppings are my favorite part for sure.
Ana says
Wine wine is the most awesome treat !! I love having Dairy Queen ice cream after a hot run !!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
The cold treats are so refreshing in the summer!
Erica Lindeman says
Gelato ice creams are the best for me. Especially when there’s a pistachio or hazelnut flavor, yum!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Sometimes I get gelato when Im on vacation – its so good!
Rachel says
So here’s something ridiculous about me. I can’t do smoothies/shakes in the summer. WHAT?! I don’t know!!! They’re only for cold weather. Same with ice cream. I prefer ice cream in winter. I dunno. Maybe because I’m trying to keep the fat on while it’s cold out? :0
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
That is so strange!! I have a much harder time drinking or eating anything cold in the winter.
Patricia @Sweet and Strong says
YES TO ALL OF THESE! I ENJOY WARM COFFEE IN THE WARMING, BUT PREFER COOLER BEVERAGES THE REMAINDER OF THE DAY.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Same here! I still stick to warm coffee when I wake up, before I go outside in the heat!
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
I’ve never gotten into fro yo… I just think regular ice cream tastes so good!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I think they are both good in different ways! I like the actual taste of ice cream better, but I love all the toppings at fro yo places.
