Another Shoe Fail and Off to Florida

Hello from Florida! Rob and I made it a long weekend and are visiting his parents for a few days. Even though it wasn’t that cold in Maryland yet, it’s really nice to have a few days in the warm weather. There isn’t too much to say about last weeks’ workouts except that I had another shoe fail. The blister I started getting in my new shoes got much worse on Thursday and I was worried I wouldn’t be able to run in any shoes for a while. Luckily, with lots of band-aids and good socks I was able to run in my Brooks.

weekly workout recap

Monday: 3 mile run and PT exercises; PM: 30 minutes yoga

This was a good run. It was chilly but not too cold. I ran in the New Balance Vazee Pace, which didn’t aggravate my blister at all. I think this was my first time wearing them since September. I like these shoes, but I think they are a little too light and don’t have enough cushioning for what I need right now.

After work I did some yoga which always feels good after sitting all day!

Tuesday: Total body strength training

I’ve really enjoyed my strength training days lately. I just make up my workouts as I go and try to mix it up as much as possible. I usually give myself 45 minutes to an hour and find that I wish I had a little more time than that! But ya know, gotta go to work unfortunately.

strength training

Wednesday: Pilates

I used the magic circle this week which really adds an extra challenge to some of the exercises!

pilates

Thursday: 3 mile run and PT exercises

This is the run when the blister got really bad. I thought it would be fine, and wore a band-aid over that area just to be safe. The first 2 miles felt good. I was thinking that it was just a fluke that the blister on Saturday happened. Then during my last mile it got really bad. I think the band-aid must have moved and I barely made it through the last mile. Walking actually felt worse than running and I was so glad when I got home and took those shoes off. Now I need to tape it up to wear any shoes- work shoes or running shoes. At least I can wear flip flops in Florida!

saucony

Friday: 40 minutes spinning, 20 minutes PT/Strength

Luckily I was able to spin without my blister hurting. I followed this workout that Megan recommended a few weeks ago! I finished up with some PT stuff and a little strength training because I knew I would be away from my weights for  a few days.

Saturday: 7 mile run and some planking

I taped up my heel and headed out in the Florida sunshine. It’s so flat here, which is a nice change from the Baltimore hills but can actually get a little boring after a while. I listened to a podcast and just zoned out while I did 7 miles. When I got back I did a couple of minutes of planking.

Sunday: 3 miles plus a little walking, Myrtl Routine

I usually don’t run 2 days in a row, but with this nice weather I couldn’t resist. I kept it really slow and easy, and took a few walking breaks.

Florida sounds lovely right now! We are actually going in a few weeks! Ugh, I wish you weren’t struggling with the shoes, that’s the worst. try the boosts next please!

      December 6, 2016 at 3:33 pm

My only hesitation with the boosts is Im trying to not move to a higher heel-toe drop. I feel like the 4mm has worked for me and feels best. But we will see, I may need to be more flexible about that!

I feel like you should just pin pictures of all the shoes you haven’t tried to a globe and spin and poke with your eyes closed and see what you land on. I’m sorry you are having such frustrations!

That plan sounds better than what I have been doing! I feel like Im at the point where Im just picking random shoes and hoping for the best.

That’s so funny that you mentioned the flat roads of Florida can get a little bit boring. I never really thought about it, but I’m sure that’s true. I definitely look forward to running the bridge most days just to add a little variety! Enjoy your long weekend! 🙂

Its definitely nice to not have the hills but there is something to be said for the downhill!

I am sorry to hear about the shoes! It can be so frustrating to find the right pair. Maybe the Saucony Zealots would work? They are like a cushioned but lightweight alternative to the Kinvaras.
Sacramento had so much sunshine also!

Thanks! I will look into those. That sounds like what I am looking for!

Weather out here in AZ has been gorgeous. 45° in the mornings with a high of about 65°. I’ve had plenty of shoe fails even within the same brand. I only run in New Balance so that is going to be my recommendation lol. But blisters are no bueno so def need to find some different shoes.

      December 6, 2016 at 3:36 pm

That weather sounds amazing! I have a pair of New Balance and I like them, but I think I need something a little more cushioned while I am working to build my mileage back up after my injury.

    December 5, 2016 at 10:32 am

I found the New Balance 860s had a good amount of cushion without feeling heavy, but I don’t know what your shoe needs are. The weather has been changing slowly, but we’re due for our first hard freeze this week.

      December 6, 2016 at 3:37 pm

Thats good to know about the 860s- thanks for sharing!

CRAP! The shoe saga can be so frustrating. I love that you were able to go to Florida though. It’s snowing here right now, and I’d kill for some sunshine! I’m not much help in the shoe department though. I feel like I’m really out of touch with what’s new out there.

      December 6, 2016 at 3:37 pm

If you had asked me before June about shoes I would have had no clue whats out there! All I knew about was the shoes I had been wearing for years.

  9. Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says

    December 5, 2016 at 3:31 pm

Ugh to the blister! I always blame my socks when stuff like that happens. I do size up a whole shoe size tho, to avoid my toes hitting the front of the shoe.

Enjoy Florida! I actually like the flat terrain… :p

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      December 6, 2016 at 3:38 pm

I also size up quite a bit, but this blister was on my heel. I even had them tied really well so that my heel wouldn’t slip! But who knows, I guess they’re just not right for me.

flat roads and warm-ish temps sound nice right about now, its super hilly and in the 40’s by me… i don’t mind winter running i just don’t enjoy the first few weeks of transitioning from high 50’s to 30’s 🙁

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      December 6, 2016 at 3:39 pm

That transition period is tough! I really liked running in the fall weather but now Im not excited about all the layers.

Sorry to hear about your blister. ..ouch! I have a hard time letting them heal on their own. I always want to pop them. I have been listening to podcasts too during my longer runs and it really does pass the time.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      December 6, 2016 at 3:39 pm

Podcasts are great for a long run! It makes me feel like Im running with other people and just listening to their stories.

I’m in the midst of considering different shoes. WHY oh WHY do they tweak the models each year? Every time I get a new shoe (and fall in love with it), the next version is always different and I feel like I have to start allover….ugh. I’m in Iowa, and we had probably the warmest November ever…and all of a sudden the temps plummeted when December hit. I prefer a little bit of transition, thank you very much LOL

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      December 6, 2016 at 3:40 pm

I hate when the weather does that! And it also drives me crazy when shoe companies change their models. Im nervosa to try sale shoes knowing the new models could be completely different!

    December 5, 2016 at 9:34 pm

Ty our blister sounds painful! 🙁 I’m glad you like the spin video. Paul loves it! I can’t aitomatically to tell him you tried it. Sometimes I run a bit more than normal if I want to take advantage for good weather! I don’t blame ya!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      December 6, 2016 at 3:41 pm

I couldn’t resist running a little more in the warmer weather, plus I had more time to get it done!

  14. Tricia@MissSippipiddlin says

    December 6, 2016 at 1:29 pm

Wait are the Guides the ones you got the blister on? Then if so I wear this same shoe and got a blister wearing them in my marathon. I chalked it up to it was a freaking marathon but I wore them for a 10k and got another blister.
I kept wearing them only on shorter runs and now they are fine for me. I’m not sure but I think for me it was the shoe and not the sock!
I hope you figure it out, it is so dang frustrating to get them!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      December 6, 2016 at 3:42 pm

Yes it was the Guides that gave me the blister! It was on my heel. I started getting it after like 4 miles or so and it just got much worse the second time I tried to run in them. I am going to be too nervous to wear the shoes again because the blister was so bad!

I’m glad you enjoyed the weather down here in Florida! For us Floridians, we were cursing the temperatures and humidity on Monday! Looks like we’ll be complaining of cold this weekend!:) Blisters are the worst!!!! Hope it heals fast!:)

That’s awesome that you live in Florida! After coming back to the cold I am thinking how nice it would be to live there, at least in the winter!

That Florida weather sounds so great! I was supposed to be there this weekend, but unfortunately plans changed.

I don’ t like the Guides either. I have a pair that I wear just for walking, but not for running. Have you thought about trying a Hoka? I believe all models (still) have a 6 mm or less drop and they have some natural support to them because the base is so wide. You may like the Clayton or the Tracer, which are their less cushioned, but still cushioned shoes!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      December 10, 2016 at 5:29 am

Thanks, I have always wondered about Hokas but never tried them! Definitely something to look into.

When I am in Florida, it is difficult to not run every day. The weather is nice — even in the summer it’s usually breezy along the coast. And, I don’t have to rush off to work either. So I run! I hate to sound like a broken record, but coating your heel with Trail Toes should prevent any blisters from forming. I originally selected Mizuno Inspires because they had a lower ankle opening and didn’t rub a surgery scar in that area. Years later, I still wear them. Thanks for linking, Lisa!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      December 11, 2016 at 8:51 am

I didn’t realize the Trail Toes could prevent blisters! I will need to look into that. Thanks for reminding me!

It’s always worth it to get out there on a cold It’s always worth it to get out there on a cold Sunday morning when you get to see the sunrise. (Even if you were woken up 5 times the night before, but let’s not talk about that) 8 miles for my longest postpartum run! Are you getting out for a run this morning?

Not sure if it was the colder weather, the shoes, Not sure if it was the colder weather, the shoes, or the extra carbs but I ran 4 miles at a much faster than usual pace. Which was good because I got out 2 hours later than planned and needed to cut my run short to get back to the chaos of my house. At least I got to run in the daylight! (But I forgot my sunglasses because when I was originally dressed to go I had my headlamp and reflective vest on). Now, it’s time for more coffee!

Right now lifting is more important than ever for me to help build back postpartum and to support my lifestyle of constantly nursing and carrying around a baby and all the stuff that kids require every day.
