I am back from an amazing 10 days in Hawaii, but not without a bit of jet lag to make the return extra challenging. Losing 6 hours of time isn’t easy, plus we took a red-eye from Maui to LA, so I basically didn’t sleep on Tuesday night. We were back at work on Thursday after getting into Baltimore at 6pm on Wednesday, but I think all the Starbucks initially powered me through. The exhaustion actually caught up with us over the weekend. We couldn’t sleep at night and were tired all day.
My workouts have been all thrown off over the past 2 weeks, but in a good way. I mean, who can complain about missing a few workouts when you opt for laying by the ocean with a coffee instead? I did manage to do something most days, even if it was just a few exercises in the room.
Rob’s parents rented a house for the 6 of us, including his sister and her husband. I pretty much alternated between easy runs and doing PT/strength exercises each day. Rob and I stayed 2 extra days and by that point I was feeling extra lazy, and barely even did my exercises. Sitting on our balcony looking at the ocean seemed way more appealing.
The foot held up really well too, despite, spending most of the trip barefoot or in flip-flops. There must be something about vacation that makes injuries magically disappear.
I guess I’ll recap starting with when we left for the trip, even though I don’t think I have posted my workouts in a few weeks…
Saturday: Rest (we were up at 3am for our flight)
Sunday: 40 minute walk with Rob plus PT exercises
Monday: 3.3 miles plus drills
Tuesday: PT/strength training
Wednesday: 3.2 miles plus strides
Thursday: PT/strength training
Friday: 3 miles plus drills and strides
Saturday: PT/strength training
Sunday: 4 miles (longest run in months!!!)
Monday: PT/strength training
Tuesday: Rest
Wednesday: Rest/travel day
Thursday: 2.1 miles
Friday: Strength training
Saturday: PT exercises plus extra glutes and core work
Sunday: 4.6 miles…my legs were sore from Saturday’s workout but I was excited to be able to increase my distance a little more this week. (Although my weekly mileage was super low due to only running 2 days)
I brought some resistance bands with me on the trip so that’s what I used for my strength training. When I got back and used weights on Friday, I was really feeling it!
I’m hoping to get back to a routine this week, but I sure will miss those ocean views.
How have your workouts been going?
How long does it take you to get over feeling jet lagged?

What a view! I always feel like I get jet lagged on the way home but never on the way there. I think that has a lot to do with vacation excitement, however, whenever we fly to the US we tend to arrive late at night (if we’re first starting in Louisiana) and our return trip arrives home in Sydney in the morning so that throws off our schedule. Usually if we arrive late at night we can go straight to sleep and get into the right schedule but when getting home so early in the morning after 26+ hours travelling it is SO hard not to fall asleep 😛

It definitely makes a difference when you get in. Think this time around was tough because it didn’t catch up with me for a few days.

I wonder if I’ll ever go to Hawaii! Those views for your runs look really incredible and glad your foot was feeling well 🙂
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says
It really is a beautiful place!

Glad you had fun in Hawaii! I haven’t been there since Thing 1 was 3! Sounds like you got a solid week of activity in and yay for 4 miles! I tend to get jet lag flying East but not West.
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says
Yep it was definitely the flight back east that really got to me!

Ahhh, who wouldn’t opt for a little extra rest and relaxation when in Hawaii!
I keep telling Adam I want to take a trip to Hawaii. He keeps arguing that we live at the beach so it’s better to vacation somewhere else, but I am positive Hawaii is totally different. Did you go see any volcanoes or waterfalls?
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says
Not this time, we did sightseeing when we went a few years ago for our honeymoon. I think that Hawaii takes the beach to a whole new level!

That type of jet lag is awful! We experienced that when we went to London, which was 8 hours ahead. We couldn’t sleep at night and were exhausted all day long. Hawaii looks like the perfect place for some extra rest and relaxation – sounds like you had a great trip!
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says
It was really great! But its so tough to not be able to sleep at night and feel tired all day.

I think that looking at the ocean with coffee is far superior. You gotta enjoy Hawaii while you’re there! And I totally feel you on jetlag. It usually takes me a good week for my body to regulate to what I know as normalcy.
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says
Im hoping I feel back to normal soon!

My parents and I went to Kaui’i when I was in college, and we took a red-eye from SF back to Boston, and some “genius” in the flight crew decided to show a movie on the flight. Umm, it’s a red-eye! And the TV was right in front of my seat. I certainly didn’t get even quality naps, so I took 3 when I got home.
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says
Its hard enough to sleep on planes as it is! Im sure the movie made it even tougher.

I LOVE HAWAII SO MUCH. It’s my favourite place on earth. I’m so glad you were able to go and relax. Woohoo! Jet lag is a bit gross, not unlike sleepless nights with babies or sick kids. I’m usually okay the next day but then the day after that I’m exhausted. I usually need two nights in a row of good sleeps and then I’m ship shape.
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says
We keep asking ourselves why we don’t live there! Its really the best place. Coming back is never easy.

Um, how did I miss that you went to Hawaii!!!!!??? It’s nice to hear about your workouts, but no offense, I want to hear about your TRIP!!!!!!!!!
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says
I’ll be sharing more about the trip this week! I had to figure out a way to break up the posts so it seemed easiest to start with the workouts:)

Your trip sounds amazing. I’m sure it was worth forgoing a few exercises. I am thinking about doing Honolulu marathon this winter. Hope you are back to a regular routine and get some sleep.

Oh wow, what a fun trip! It sounds relaxing. I expect the beautiful ocean views, but I can’t get over the lawn in the first picture. It’s so perfect, it almost looks fake! Generally speaking, the trip home is so much harder. There is no excitement or adrenaline or adventures waiting (unless you count laundry!) like you had on the trip out. I’m glad you had no foot issues on the vacation! Thanks for linking, Lisa!
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says
The lawn was so perfect! I think Rob was a little envious that he couldnt get ours to look like that:) And it was nice to be so close to the beach without having to get all messy from the sand! (Although the first part of the trip we did sit on the actual beach, which was nice too!)

6 hours is huge change! Coming back is a big adjustment. Glad you felt good while you were there 🙂 What a fun vacation!
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says
Thanks! Ive been back for a week now and I think I just finally got adjusted back to the time change.

What an amazing trip – looks absolutely beautiful! Travel always throws my running routine for a loop (and for a type A like you and me, that can be maddening). You did really great considering – I would have been tempted to just sit on the beach with a drink the whole time 🙂 Oh jetlag! The older I get, the harder it is to get over it. I swear the last time I went overseas it took about a week to fully shake it and get back on my normal schedule.
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says
One thing that helped with the workouts was that because of the time change I was up at like 4am for the first few days! And then still early for the rest of the time. So it was easier to get in a short workout since it was still so early and I didnt feel like I was missing anything.
