It May Be April But It Feels Like January 95th

Welcome to the never-ending winter. Wait, didn’t I just say last week that spring was in the air? Apparently that was just a tease. This week we were back to cold, wind, and rain. Luckily we were spared the snow that was originally in the forecast. It did indeed feel like January 95th.

It may be April, but it feels like January 95th, at least in Baltimore. Click post to read more about my workouts this dreary, cold, windy week. #running #workouts

My apologies if I sound grumpy, I think I’m just low on Vitamin D. I ran outside once this week and it was completely overcast. My run was kind of “blah” and I feel like I’ve just been in a rut lately. At least my strength training is going well!

Here is what happened this week:

Monday: 4 miles plus stability exercises

Took this nice and easy after not feeling great on Sunday. I think it was something I ate on Saturday night, but luckily I was feeling better for Easter dinner. By Monday morning I was pretty much back to normal.

monday run

Tuesday: Strength training plus 3 miles

Started out my second week of phase 6 of my strength training plan, followed by a short run.

tuesday workout

Wednesday: 4 miles

Picked up the pace a bit on this one, but didn’t really feel like following a structured workout.

wednesday run

Thursday: Strength training plus spinning

On Wednesday evening we lost power due to some crazy winds in our area, so I was happy to see that it was back on Thursday morning. Otherwise I would have had to skip my workout. I definitely couldn’t have managed working out in the dark!

strength training

Friday: 3 miles

Just 3 easy miles to finish off the work week.

friday run

Saturday: 6 miles

It was so dreary out but I was determined to get outside. While I usually would have done more than 6, I just didn’t really feel like it. I figured I would have plenty of more chances to run more miles once the weather improves.

saturday run

Sunday: Rest

As I said last week I am cutting back a bit on the running as I focus on strength training. I wasn’t quite as sore this week but I do feel like I get more out of the exercises when I am running less. Maybe became I am devoting more energy to those workouts? Who knows. If this weather continues I’m not sure I’ll have the motivation to increase my mileage much anyway!

Yep, January 95th here in Virginia too! It took me 20 minutes to get warm on my long run last week. And I totally get the low vitamin D–I moved my bike trainer outside on the one warm day we had last week just to feel the warm air and sun on my back.

It seems like its been such a long winter in so many places! I bet the sun felt great during your workout.

Haha – I love the title of this post! I completely agree! The winter is just never ending. I definitely think I get more out of my strength workouts when I am not running as much. Over the winter when my mileage is lower, I have more energy for strength and can push harder. During lower mileage weeks, I do strength 3x/week whereas I only do it 2x/week during high mileage.

Its hard to fit in everything, especially when running high mileage!

I’m feeling downright angry at mother nature at this point. I feel like we’ve been robbed of what “should” be a spring month. There’s been no outdoor track season to speak of for my kids with all the meets cancelled due to cold/snow. And yes, we have another snowstorm in progress as I type.

It’s so frustrating! Im sorry you are getting more snow. Today was another overcast, chilly, gross 30 something degree day. I know it could be worse but we really shouldn’t be wearing winter coats in April.

I love this title and completely agree with it!! When the weather is dreary and grey, it’s hard to enjoy running outside since it’s just gross looking. Fingers crossed spring comes soon…

It was chilly here this past weekend too and I didn’t do too many runs outside and opted for classes at the gym instead. I am sick of bundling up to go out for my run.

It’s getting really annoying at this point! We should be able to run in shorts by now.

The title of this post made me laugh out loud!
Can you believe that we might get snow yet AGAIN tomorrow?! I’m hoping that it will just end up being rain.

I hope you don’t get more snow! We had a few flurries today but nothing that stuck.

It sure does feel like January 95th! LOL! I woke up to another snow covered world…

Here’s to hoping that the warmer weather we’ve been promised actually shows up! I hope you have a better week of running too.

  8. Catherine says

We got some snow in April 1 which is so weird for Seattle. Way to get the workouts in though. I think winter is a great time to focus on strength. I have a hard time doing both strength and running at the same time.

      April 9, 2018 at 6:20 pm

Its definitely been a good time of year to focus on strength training. Im hoping Ill be ready to run more when it warms up!

I am running shorter distances because I need to focus on strength training. I’ve made so much progress with my ITBS, and I like the strength training sessions. Since I have my home gym, it’s so easy to get them done.

Great job on your workouts! I am so done with winter too…we had flurries this morning!
Although we have temps in the 70s and 80s coming later this week so I can’t wait for that!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      April 9, 2018 at 6:21 pm

  11. Laura says

I’m so over it too! And the forecast for Boston is more cold + rain… 🙁 But I’m trying to remind myself cold is better than hot for racing.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      April 9, 2018 at 6:21 pm

That’s so true! Definitely better to race in the cold than the heat.

You can’t do everything, and that counts for strength training and running as well! For one, there just isn’t enough time!
And yes to this winter. I think after the winters from the past 5 years, we are all just tired of it.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      April 9, 2018 at 6:21 pm

We should all really move to some place warmer!

We have had some weird spring days, but overall it’s been relatively springlike – some rainy days, some clear, but nothing too crazy cold. Today it was 50 and sunny on my run! I hope you get some nicer weather soon!

I definitely get much more out of pure barre with running less. running less as you know right now makes me so happy, especially for reasons like having more energy and focus for strength workouts with pure barre. it’s a nice change!

LOL at January 95th – it’s so true, I don’t even believe that it’s April because it doesn’t feel like it! When will the sunshine come??

When I run less, I enjoy doing more strength training and yoga. Once this marathon is done, that’s what I hope to get to!

Thanks! We are supposed to get quite a bit of rain over the next few weeks I think, but that better than cold and snow!

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
