MIMM: A Relaxing Weekend

This weekend was much different that the past few…unlike the 4th of July weekend and having visitors come to Baltimore, we spent this weekend relaxing and it was pretty marvelous.

On Saturday I got a great long run in, as I wrote about here. For the first time in awhile I was excited to go out and run for more than an hour, even though the weather was not ideal. It was a challenging run both mentally and physically, but gave me that reminder of how I will need to push through runs like that when I am back to training for my next marathon.

longrun

After my run on Saturday I took my time getting motivated to start the day, but then we got grocery shopping done AND I did all my meal prep. Since we have a short week, we figured we could do that stuff on Saturday. (Usually we prefer to go on Sunday so that the produce will last longer into the week).

meal prep 7.19.14

Sunday morning was so relaxing. We drank smoothies and sat around drinking coffee for several hours. I skipped free yoga at the inner harbor because mornings like this don’t come around too often.

smoothies

Getting a mani/pedi on Friday was another highlight of the weekend. That’s one of my favorite splurges especially at the end of the work week.

We’re going to Maine on Thursday! Rob’s grandpa has a house there and his family has been going there forever (he has some other family in the area too). They hadn’t gone in a awhile and a couple years after we started dating they decided to start going again. I was invited and it was my first trip with his family. Today my timehop reminded me that this was 7 years ago!

maine1maine2 I’m excited for the cooler weather and easy-going lifestyle up there. We always talk about how everyone there is so friendly and when we are out running everyone waves to everyone else (even people driving by in cars). That just doesn’t happen in Baltimore.

Tell me something marvelous about your weekend!

Glad you had a relaxing weekend! Ours was fun but not relaxing – we visited Adams college friends in Connecticut and it was a one big party all weekend, which apparently we are just too old for. Plus I attempted to water ski and I’m now really sore in addition to exhausted.

Maine will be so nice for you guys! Also, we had almost the exact same run sat morning- 10 miles and mine was 8:46 pace!

Sounds like a fun weekend, although I know how tiring that can be! I’m sure you’re excited to get back to your routine.
I saw your run on instagram right after I finished and was thinking how it was like exactly the same-too funny! I wonder if that will happen even more once we are training (although I’m sure your paces will be much faster than mine:))

Love the mani/pedi. I have a gift certificate for one that I’ve been itching to use, but just haven’t had the time. Maybe this week! Our weekend was pretty relaxing too, which always makes me feel a little more refreshed heading into the office Monday morning. Have fun in Maine!

Gift certificates to the salon are the best! I agree that a relaxing weekend definitely makes me more prepared to move back into the workweek.

I’ve never been to Maine but I hear s) it is gorgeous and b) there are giant swarms of black flies in the summer. But I think that the lobster would be worth it 😉 Alex and I did NOT have a relaxing weekend–in fact, I am plum wore out! But I definitely did the same thing that you did–I skipped yoga on Thursday in favor of spending just one more hour at home with my boy. I don’t get hardly any of those, so it was totally worth it.

      July 21, 2014 at 5:32 pm

Oh no I don’t remember seeing any giant swarms of black flies! I will look out for them but hopefully I don’t see any because that sounds pretty gross. I am not a huge lobster fan but we do lobsters one time while we are there and I do eat a little bit.
Your weekend sounds busy but fun and hopefully you have a somewhat relaxing week to make up for it!

Sometimes there is nothing better than skipping some yoga or a run or something else on Sunday morning and just being lazy with coffee and a book or something 🙂 nice job getting out there on Saturday for your long run 🙂 Maine sounds like it will be an awesome time! I’m hoping to go the weekend of August 3rd but I think I’m away all the other Sundays this summer, except maybe labor day. Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
