Route 66 Marathon Training Week 6

This was the first week I really felt like I was “marathon training”. I was tired from a race the previous weekend, had some harder workouts on the schedule, and bumped up my long run to 15 miles.

weekly workout recap

If you read my recap from last week, you’d see that I ran a 12 mile race on Saturday and an easy 5 miles on Sunday. This meant I was moving into this week already having semi-tired legs without my usual Sunday rest day. (The races have caused my schedule to be a little different lately). However, I still had a solid week although I was more than ready for a rest day Thursday!

Monday: 5 miles easy, hip and core exercises

Tuesday: 7 miles with 5x800s. It was a dark morning at the track, but I wore my headlight and my splits were spot on.

track

Wednesday: AM: 5 miles easy, PM: Strength workout with hip and core exercises

wednesday

Thursday: Rest day (with some hip/core exercises)

Friday: 6 miles with 4 at MGP

Saturday: 15 miles with lots of hills!

saturday

I ran a route that took me back to Druid Hills, where I got to experience the hills from my race 2 weeks ago once again.

long run

Then I spent the rest of the day in compression tights and socks.

procompression

Sunday: Rest day

Total: 38 miles

It was a good week, and I think it will be helpful to settle into a routine without any more races for a while. Part of me liked the weekday rest days, but I also really enjoy Sunday rest days after a long run!

This was also an interesting week with the weather. It was cooler earlier in the week, then the heat and humidity came back, but by the end of the week it cooled off again and Saturday was rainy. Hopefully the weather will continue to improve over the next few weeks!

I can never figure out my favorite day for a rest day which must be why I go by how I feel for when I need one/based on whatever else is going on in my nonrunning life. I am excited to run this morning because I think it’s cooler out than it’s been! It’s supposed to be hot again by the middle of the week.

I usually like having a planned rest day to look forward to, but its also nice to take them randomly once in a while!
It was such great running weather this morning- I was actually a little chilly when I first got outside!

I like Sunday rest days if I can manage it. As for the weather, I think it might finally be getting cooler and that makes me really happy 🙂

Yes! Today was such great running weather, finally starting to feel a little like fall!

Great job lady! 800s huh, I had those this week too, and they are a tough one to wrap your head around, but they make you so strong! You are going about training smartly, and I look forward to seeing how it goes 🙂

Our weather is bananas. Finally supposed to be holding strong today in the 60s and clear, but I swear, if it is bananas for the rest of the Saturdays I will through the biggest hissy fit ever. And the one sunday of Race day it better be nice.

I feel like I can’t even keep track of the weather anymore. This whole summer has been so random and unpredictable!

It cooled off here mid-week and was so nice this weekend! It looks like it might warm up a little again, but hopefully not too much. Running on tired legs is hard, but it’s so good for marathon training – it will pay off in those last 6 miles 🙂

I actually wasn’t planning to do the part of the park that was super hilly, but I got turned around and there was no where to go but up! I guess it will only make me stronger, right? I’m definitely excited for some better weather this week!

It has definitely cooled down where I am – for now at least. I heard this coming week is going to be a hot one again!! But am I ever enjoying the gorgeous cool weather while its here.
I am pretty adamant about Sunday rest days. There’s just something about Sunday that screams rest.

Lisa, we definitely had a nice break in the weather over the weekend; I was able to start my 12-miler in a temperature of 61 degrees, and that was quite a treat! I think it’ll all be over by Wednesday, though, which is kind of a bummer; we’ll be back to lows in the 70s and highs around 90 – ugh. You had a great training week!! Way to go!! Hope your Monday is off to a good start!

Last week’s humidity was awful! This week is looking amazing…but now I kinda don’t remember how to dress for cool temps. LOL. Last week was a step back week for me in my training, so I took it easy after the Chuck 12. This week I’m back on track and ready to get through the next two tough weeks before taper. Good for you for voluntarily going back to Druid Hill Park. You must be a glutton for punishment. 🙂

Not sure if I will be going back to Druid Hill Park anymore! I got turned around when I was there and basically forced to go up some of the toughest climbs. And then it was mostly uphill getting back home.

Sundays are normally rest days for me too but I’ll usually end up taking an active rest, even if it’s only walking. I love pulling on a pair of compression socks after a hard race or training run too! I love your hot pink ones! I see you ran with your Camelbak on your long hilly run. I like mine, but sometimes that extra weight is a nuisance. I think I drink too often when I wear it too. Mondays are my favorite rest day. Transitioning back to work is a workout in itself. I’m going to miss running Route 66 this year, although I guess there’s a possibility I may do the half. My sister lives in Tulsa. You had a great training week! Thanks for linking up with us today!

I agree that the weight can be annoying! But I definitely feel like I need water on my long runs and I get annoyed carrying something in my hand. I probably drink too much water when I wear mine too!

Awesome job on your 15-miler and 800s! I love taking Saturday’s off, but I’m going to switch it around when my long runs pick up, so that I don’t have a day off before. I think running on legs that aren’t “fresh” will help with my marathon training…hopefully ha 😀

Thank goodness for the cooler temps! Sounds like you are back in the swing of things! I’ve been running on tired legs and it really seems to be helping. In fact, my coach believes more in that than running a 20 mile run. I’ll be lucky to hit 18!

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
