The Weekly Wrap: Making Progress

This was the first week that I really felt like I was making progress with my return to running. It definitely helped that we had perfect running weather throughout most of the week. I feel bad to even say that, knowing what other states are dealing with right now. I hope everyone in Irma’s path has evacuated or is safely enduring the storm. My in-laws have a house and boat in Cape Coral so we are waiting to hear about the shape of everything in a few days.

This was the first week that I started to see improvements with my running after coming back from an injury. Click post to read more about my runs and other workouts this week.

I wanted to take advantage of the good weather and run outside this week rather than on the treadmill. All of a sudden it’s dark in the mornings again- how did that happen? Most days I ran at around 5:30 am and the sun was starting to rise at 6:00 when I was finishing up, so that was nice to see.

Other than that, I did week 6 of my strength training plan and got in the pool for some swimming and pool running. I don’t want to admit how long it’s been since I did that.

Monday: Strength training and walk

It was Labor Day so I was off from work. After completing my strength training workout I drank a smoothie and then went outside for a 30 minute walk.

walk

Tuesday: 2.4 mile run/walk

This was my first headlamp run of the fall! When I run outside I’m not as good about following specific times for run/walk intervals, I just do what feels right. I think most of these intervals were about 3-5 minutes of running with 1-2 minutes of walking.

Wednesday: Strength training

Last strength training workout of phase 2!

Thursday: 2.3 mile run/walk

Another great morning for running outside. At one point I ran a full mile without stopping. It’s crazy that these days this is an accomplishment. I’ve just been really focusing on my form and take walk breaks when I start losing form.

Friday: 45 minutes swimming/pool running

I finally got back in the pool after way too much time off. It wasn’t that bad. I had the pool to myself which is always nice.

swimming

Saturday: 3.2 miles

I actually felt like my self again on this run! I did a little more running and less walking than my other runs and felt great the whole time. My ankle was a little sore later in the day, but it seemed like it was just adjusting to running again and felt great the next day.

saturday

To celebrate my return to running we went beer tasting in the afternoon at Union Craft Brewery. For the first round they gave us small sample beers, but when we went up for the second round they gave us full pints. I forgot to take a picture until they were almost gone!

Sunday: Rest

It was a lazy day of blogging, doing some work-related reading, and enjoying some of the beer we got from the brewery out on the deck.

I’ve been knocking on lots of wood about the progress I’ve made with running this week. It feels like every time I have a few good runs, I’m then hit with a setback. So please keep your fingers cross for me!

It feels good when everything just clicks! So glad to hear that you had a good week and that you feel like you are making fantastic progress.

I hope that your in-laws do not sustain too much damage due to Hurricane Irma. I think the strength of the storm died down overnight so that is definitely a good sign!

Glad to hear you are back to running – hooray! It’s all of a sudden dark here as well! It used to be bright as day at 5:15 and now it’s still not quite light at 6:15. I like craft beer possibly too much, especially now that we’ve been homebrewing and it’s Oktoberfest season.

Its so awesome that you are home brewing! I bet that is so nice to enjoy, especially in the fall.

It is sooooo dark out in the morning now. I don’t like it one bit! Congrats on getting back in the running game. My fingers are crossed that the smooth running continues!

Yay, so glad you are getting some running miles in! I really do need to hit the pool for some water running…. maybe that will keep my ankle from falling apart on me during this training cycle!

That sounds like a great plan! I find pool running pretty boring but its a great way to supplement your marathon training!

Great week of workouts! I don’t run in the dark very often. I reserve that for my very long marathon training days (that I don’t have to worry about this year!). But it is a bummer that it is dark much later now than it was a month ago!

Such a great week of workouts! Yay for getting back to feeling great. I live in Colorado and we have so many breweries. I do like some craft beer…mainly porters and stouts! Not so into IPAs (too hoppy tasting for me). All my workouts year round are in the dark. I actually prefer it that way and it works out that I naturally wake up before the sun!

I definitely like getting in my workouts first thing in the morning. And this time of year is nice because the sun is rising as Im finishing my run!

Alright, my last post about the Richmond Marathon Alright, my last post about the Richmond Marathon (maybe). This one is about lessons learned/areas for improvement.

1) Starting in the right corral- I knew I wanted to start a little slow but I think I started too far back and I ended up boxed in later in the race.

2) Increasing fueling- I think I did the best I could on this day but now that I know more about what works/doesn’t work for me I think I can try to get my carbs/hr a little higher for next time

3) Self-doubt- On paper I knew my training showed I could run a certain time. My coach knew I could run a certain time. But deep down did I believe I could run that time? I’m not really sure.

4) My right piriformis- This little muscle has been giving me trouble FOREVER and it likes to rear its ugly head the most during races. I’m working with a PT but it’s hard to address the issue when I can go months without any problems and then at mile 15 of a marathon it starts acting up. So while this is certainly an area for improvement I am not really sure what I’ll be able to do to keep it from happening next time.

5) Ignore the data leading up to the race- During race week my sleep scores were horrible, my HRV tanked, and my watch told me I was “strained”. I might just stop wearing it during the taper next time.

What lessons have you learned during a marathon or big race?

@richmondmarathon #racerecap
It’s been 5 days since the Richmond Marathon and i It’s been 5 days since the Richmond Marathon and it feels like a lifetime ago! I am working on my full race recap which I will post on my website but I wanted to share some reflections on here. Today I want to focus on what went well. Every finish line is an accomplishment, and while every race can teach us something I think it’s always important to focus on the positive.

First off, Richmond was a great race with amazing crowd support! There were some hills (a few steeper than I expected) but nothing crazy.

Fueling went well- after my train wreck of a run a few weeks ago I had to adjust my fueling plan and took out the Tailwind High Carb and went back to regular Skratch instead. I tried to make up for the difference with gels but my overall carbs per hour was a little less than it had been when using the Tailwind. I think I got about 65 g/hour so I’d like to get that up a bit next time but I didn’t get nauseous and took gels up until the end of the race.

Shoes felt good- during that same training run I had some top of foot soreness from my laces. I changed my lacing technique and had no issues on race day.

Mindset- I did a lot of work preparing for the race mentally and was able to use those strategies during the race. I focused on one mile at a time and shifted my goals when I knew my original goal was not going to happen.

Pacing- Even though I didn’t run my goal pace I was able to run fairly consistently without drastically slowing down at the end.

Recovery- I felt pretty good following the race and wasn’t even sore anymore by Tuesday. This was probably the least sore I’ve been after a marathon.

Strong training cycle- this year I feel like I’ve been clawing my way back to where I was a year ago after several illnesses last winter and spring. I had a great training cycle with @lauranorrisrunning and I know I’ve made more progress than my race time shows.

Marathons are a huge investment so I really tried to make the most of the experience!

@richmondmarathon #racerecap
Happy Medal Monday! I can’t believe the Richmond M Happy Medal Monday! I can’t believe the Richmond Marathon was only 2 days ago. I’m barely sore (probably because I was trained for a faster time than I ran) and am feeling good.

I included a list of my marathon times on the last slide here, which I posted in my stories yesterday. I got some messages about how others can relate to feeling like their times “reset” at a certain point- whether it was after an injury, having kids, or just time off from running.

I think we can get so caught up in PRs that it may take away from the overall progress made in the process of training. Sure, there are runners who come back from having kids and immediately set a new lifetime PR. But many of us will need to chip away at our times to get to where we want to be.

Focusing on progress and the gains made in a training cycle vs a specific race time can help to keep things in perspective!

Now, I’m trying to figure out spring racing plans. What’s everyone running this spring?

#medalmonday
What a day! This race (and really, this week) was What a day! This race (and really, this week) was a rollercoaster. I knew pretty early on that my legs and my lungs were not feeling my goal pace. Each time I sped up it felt really hard- way too hard to not even be at 10 miles yet. So I just focused on running the effort that my body would allow. I used all the mental strategies I had to get through each mile. Ultimately, I wanted to run faster than my marathon last November, which I did by almost 2 minutes, making this a postpartum PR. More importantly, I smiled almost the whole time.

After finishing we had to rush to get out of our hotel room and spent the whole afternoon driving home. Over the past 2 days I’ve spent almost 10 hours in the car.

More to come soon…just hoping to get home and get some rest soon!
