Save It For A Sunny Day

This weekend I decided to save my run for Sunday, rather than getting out there on Saturday when it was cloudy and rainy. Isn’t there a song, “Save it for a rainy day”? Well, I did the opposite. Why would I waste one of my runs in less than ideal conditions when my time outside is limited these days?

When you can only run 3 days a week, it's nice to save it for a sunny day rather than running in the rain!

It worked out because I had to get in to work early on Friday so I made that my rest day. Other than that the week was pretty standard. Oh, and you are probably wondering about those orthotics. I called back on Monday and someone finally answered the phone. They were going to check on them and see what was going on, and call me back. Still no word, and I would have called back again later this week but I completely forgot.

I’ve still been doing the dry needling with my chiropractor. He’s been targeting my anterior tibialis and found some good spots in there. I guess it’s that thing where if one muscle is tight the opposing muscle will get overused? It seems to be working so I’m just hoping it continues to feel good. He wanted me to try a little more running this weekend, so we agreed on about 4 miles. I go back Tuesday and will hopefully have good things to report.

dry needling

Monday: 30 minutes spin bike + core/glutes/arms

After 30 minutes on the bike I did my own combo of exercises for the core and glutes, and included some push-ups as well.

Tuesday: 2.2 miles, Run &10 core workout

The 10 minute videos are perfect before or after a run. It makes it easier to get everything in each week when I just focus on doing each video once per week.

morning run

Wednesday: 1 hour total body strength training

The usual basement strength training workout.

single leg dead lifts

Thursday: 2.2 miles, Run & 10 hip/glute workout

Pretty much the same as Tuesday, but a different Run & 10 video. It’s so nice to see the sunrise in the mornings again!

sunrise run

Friday: Rest
Saturday: 45 minute spin bike, Run &10 stability workout

It was rainy and windy so I kept my workout indoors. I spent some time with the foam roller after my workout too.

cross training

Sunday: 4.2 miles, Run & 10 mobility and arm workouts

Yay for sunshine! I did an out and back, and the way out was really windy, and mostly uphill. So on the way back I felt like I was flying! Great way to start a Sunday.

Sunday run

So, overall a pretty good week because I got to RUN 3 times! However, I’ve been here before, thinking I was on the mend. So I’m trying not to get too excited.

Do you stick to a running schedule or move your runs around based on the weather?
Anyone else been surprised by an area that was tight and causing pain somewhere else?

Whooo for three runs and getting to see the sunrise!

A couple of years ago I was surprised to learn that tight hips led to more than just tight hips. When I learned it also was responsible for some knee pain/tightness I was having it amazed me!

Isn’t it crazy how everything is connected?

I love seeing the sun so early again too! it wasn’t raining here Saturday morning but I may have switched things around if it was! I love the 10 minute pure barre workouts for the same reason, easy to fit in!

Exactly, there’s no excuse to skip strength training when it only takes 10 minutes!

It totally makes sense to try to run in the best weather possible!

Hooray for three runs! I move my runs around the weather sometimes, although this year had so much rain that it didn’t really matter.

      May 8, 2017 at 7:58 pm

Yea I guess when it rains every day there is no way to avoid it!

That’s great that you were able to run on Sunday and enjoy the sun 🙂

How are you liking the dry needling so far? I’m thnking of trying it just to see if it helps any of my tight spots.

I hope that you get good news about your orthotics soon!

      May 8, 2017 at 7:59 pm

I’ve always found the dry needling to be really effective! You should definitely give it a try if its an option for you!

    May 8, 2017 at 8:54 am

I would definitely rather save it for a sunny day too! Does dry needling hurt at all?

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 8, 2017 at 8:00 pm

It’s not painful but doesn’t feel great either. My chiro and I agree that lower leg/feet are the worst for needling. Typically it feels like a pinch and once the needles in you don’t notice it anymore.

Awesome! 3 runs last week! Great job. Boy, I hope you get your orthotics soon. Then you will finally have the foot correction you need to get back to your running schedule! Just in time for summer which is perfect. Keep it up.

      May 8, 2017 at 8:01 pm

I hope so too! I feel like they have gone missing because I’m not getting any answers/updates!

So happy to read a great report! I know you work so hard to get your body strong and balanced. I move workouts around based on weather all the time. My long run conditions were quite similar. Nice and sunny but that wind heading out was fierce!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 8, 2017 at 8:01 pm

The wind was pretty crazy! It made it feel so cold out, I even thought that I should have worn gloves!

Running in the sunshine always beat the rain any day. I will switch out my days as well if the weather isn’t ideal. Man those orthodics are taking way long. Hopefullythey will be there soon.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 8, 2017 at 8:02 pm

They really are taking way too long! I had no idea it would be such a process.

  10. Suzy says

    May 8, 2017 at 11:02 am

Aww man, I’m sorry that you have to feel so guarded about having good runs. I’d be the same way. I hope you get those orthotics SOON! I’m glad you got to run outside and enjoy the sunrise. That makes me happy to hear.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 8, 2017 at 8:03 pm

Guarded is such a good word to describe it! I feel like at this rate I could have made my own orthotics…

  11. Lesley says

    May 8, 2017 at 1:34 pm

I’ve been surprised that my calves may be contributing to my ITBS. All the focus with ITBS is hips and glutes, with no mention of calves, but my calves were super tight too, and another area I’ve needed to work on.

      May 8, 2017 at 8:03 pm

I’m glad you got in a sunny run, Lisa! I try to save mine for sunny days too. This weekend was so crappy that I didn’t run at all! I just didn’t feel like it.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 8, 2017 at 8:04 pm

Its good to take some time off when you don’t feel like running! (or when the weather is crappy)

  13. Kimberly Hatting says

    May 8, 2017 at 5:56 pm

Ha! I seldom ever follow a “plan” exactly as written. I try to stay close to the plan, but I modify it as needed due to my non-running stuff and weather, etc. Somehow it always works out ;-)Glad you’re feeling better!!!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 8, 2017 at 8:05 pm

I think its really good to be flexible like that! When I am training I tend to follow a plan. Ill move stuff around if i have to but I try to avoid it.

Great week! I will rearrange my workouts if I can but this weekend our only “free” day was Saturday. I was able to run before the rain, but we ended up getting wet on our bike ride later.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 8, 2017 at 8:06 pm

I was lucky to have the flexibility to run either day this weekend. Sometimes our Sundays get tied up with errands, church, etc. so I feel like I have to run Saturday otherwise it won’t get done.

  16. Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says

    May 8, 2017 at 8:46 pm

I do stick to a schedule, simply based on my work schedule. I run when I have time. This spring has really tested me–the wind, the cold, and the rain has made it a mental battle. But I think it makes me a tougher runner. Let’s see how that all works out tomorrow morning…

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 9, 2017 at 5:07 am

It’s definitely harder to be flexible the more you run. I find that it’s easier to move things around when I’m running less than 10 miles a week!

  17. Deborah @ Confessions of a mother runner says

    May 8, 2017 at 8:48 pm

I do rearrange sometimes if I need to bike. I don’t mind running in the rain but biking is no fun. Glad the dry needling is working for you. It looks painful

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 9, 2017 at 5:07 am

Oh yea I definitely wouldn’t want to bike outside in the rain!

  18. Teresa says

    May 8, 2017 at 9:06 pm

I’m always moving my workouts around based on weather and life….but I’m just a fluid type person 🙂 So good to hear that you got three runs in! I know how great that feels …I’ve certainly been there many times. What’s up with those orthotics??? Speaking of …I’m still adjusting to mine but it is getting better and better. 🙂

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 9, 2017 at 5:08 am

Glad to hear you’ve been adjusting to them! It seems like such a process and Im just ready to get it started.

  19. Rachel says

    May 8, 2017 at 9:36 pm

That dry needling looks painful- just saying, so I do hope it is working for you! Kudos to 3 runs! I do move things around on the weekend based on weather or other obligations, otherwise I try to stick to the plan. 🙂 Keeping the routine works for me!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 9, 2017 at 7:26 pm

The needling is not my favorite, but I’ll do whatever will help. I also like to stick to a routine as much as possible!

    May 9, 2017 at 11:16 am

Yay for running three days!! And great job on all of your strength and cross training! Depending on what’s going on, I usually have to get my long run done no matter what the weather conditions might be. I remember running 10 miles in the rain before. It never stopped! I try not to do that any more and admit I skipped one last long run last weekend because of the heat! Hope you have another great week!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 9, 2017 at 7:30 pm

Thank you! Long runs in the rain are tough- same goes for the heat!

Its nice to have a schedule but also good to be flexible about when we get our workouts in!

  23. Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says

    May 9, 2017 at 8:20 pm

I have definitely moved my runs around based on the weather. I’m often a wimp when it comes to running in bad weather. A little bit of drizzle is one thing, but a heavy downpour is a deal breaker.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 10, 2017 at 5:14 am

Its so hard for me to start a run in the rain! Its not quite as bad if it starts raining once Im already out there.

It sounds like the dry needling is working. Fingers crossed for continued improvement! I just can’t believe you still don’t have your orthotics. Obviously something got goofed up. I rearrange my runs based on weather all the time. thanks for linking, Lisa!

19 miles! 7 on the treadmill, 12 outside, 1,272 to 19 miles! 7 on the treadmill, 12 outside, 1,272 total feet of elevation gain. Amazing weather. Listened to Life of a Showgirl on the treadmill and had some podcasts saved for my outside run but couldn’t get my headphones to connect. This was challenging by the end and I kept thinking how hard it would be if I needed to run another 7 miles today (and all miles at a faster pace) but this is why we train.
