End of February Weekly Recap

Another week has come and gone, and today is the last day of February! I always find March to be a bit of a letdown because I expect it to magically get warmer but usually it’s still pretty cold and sometimes there is even snow. Hopefully yesterday’s springlike weather is a sign of what’s to come, although I’m not holding my breath:)

Last week was pretty good for running. There was no ice or snow, just lot’s of rain and wind for a few days. I did my first “workout” to start getting back into speed work which I will share later this week. I also upped my strength training a bit and my legs were feeling it.

Monday: 5.12 mile easy, core work

monday

Tuesday: 4.41 miles, hip exercises

Wednesday: Total body strength training

Thursday: 6.13 mile tempo run

thursday

Friday: 3 miles easy, core work, and some easy yoga

Saturday: 8 miles

sunday

Sunday: 4 miles easy and strength training

sunday

Total: 30.76 miles

Walked: 18.8 miles  Push-ups: 4 days:

Yearly Total: 339.34/2016

And now it’s time for a rest day! There was no way I was passing up a run on Sunday when the weather was perfect.

Do you schedule you runs around the weather?

Do you take a rest day on the same day every week?

What was your best workout last week?

i try to schedule with the weather yet if Saturday is not snowing, I usually stay with Saturday over sunday for a long run even if Sunday’s weather is nicer. Which is exactly how it went down this weekend! I didn’t even run at all yesterday although it was so nice out. oh well, hopefully more nice days are to come.

It just feels weird to me to skip a run on Saturday! I did that a few weeks ago and I was all thrown off. Actually all these Sunday runs are really throwing off my schedule, but its nice to be able to run later in the morning when it’s light out!

I have learned that running in bad weather (and by that I mean rain, not storms, you know what I mean) isn’t as bad as I used to think, but I still like to have the flexibility to run on a nice day, that is for sure!

    • [email protected] says

      February 29, 2016 at 5:46 pm

I think the bad weather just makes us appreciate the good weather even more!

I definitely schedule my runs around the weather too. If it’s going to be chilly out on the weekend I sleep in and then go in the middle of the day. That only happens like 3 weekends a year here though, haha!

      February 29, 2016 at 5:47 pm

That’s smart! I like getting my run done early so I’m happy when it’s cool enough for running but not freezing:)

We ended up with nice weather to finish the week here. I got out for a long bike ride on Sunday, which was really nice. Good for you getting strength workouts in like that. I’m currently struggling with my strength workouts. My coach doesn’t give me rest days but Mondays are usually an easy day and I can take it off if I need to. I usually need it more mentally than physically.

      February 29, 2016 at 5:48 pm

Today I think I needed a rest day mentally! It’s nice to not think about working out sometimes.

Great job on your workouts. Yesterday was beautiful here and I went for a run outside. But unfortunately I heard this wkend there is a another chance of snow coming our way. I never take the same reat day every wk. I usually take it when I know it’s not going to fit into my schedule that day.

      February 29, 2016 at 5:48 pm

I heard there is more snow coming too! Ugh, I’m hoping the forecast changes.

Beautiful sunrise on your Saturday run! I will move around workouts for weather if it’s very heavy rain or snow, but usually I stick to my schedule or just take a run inside. Sundays are almost always my rest day unless the weather is too nice.

    • [email protected] says

      February 29, 2016 at 5:50 pm

Same for me, I usually take Sundays as a rest day but lately the weather has been good on Sundays plus I can run later in the morning which means Im not running in the dark!

I’ve been taking rest days on Fridays during this training cycle, but when I wasn’t training and only running 4 days a week I always took my rest day on Sunday. My best workout last week was probably my 15K run Saturday morning–the weather was amazing out and I got to catch an amazing sunrise!

    • [email protected] says

      February 29, 2016 at 5:51 pm

I like how your schedule has a long run Saturday and a recovery run Sunday. Sometimes its nice to take a rest day during the week- especially Friday when we are already exhausted from a long week!

  8. Lesley says

    February 29, 2016 at 9:26 am

I do sometimes mix things up if the weather is looking really good. I changed up my running route this past weekend so I could run in the sun. My usual route was in the shade, but it was so nice in the sun, I went in the other direction.

    • [email protected] says

      February 29, 2016 at 5:51 pm

That was a good choice! It’s been nice to see the sun more lately:)

  9. Michael Anderson says

    February 29, 2016 at 10:16 am

I like to take advantage of the weather, but usually I just go with what works for my schedule. And my priorities … so I ran 12 days straight, which ended on Friday, then took the weekend off because Lisa was off. She even said yesterday as we were running errands “wouldn’t you love to be out running?” And I honestly said “of course, but I’d rather be with you.”

And I know I am lucky that I can just say “I’m going to run 12 days straight without rest” and it is all cool.

    • [email protected] says

      February 29, 2016 at 5:52 pm

That makes sense! And yes, you are very lucky to be able to run so many miles/day without rest:)

  10. Alyssa @ renaissancerunnergirl says

    February 29, 2016 at 10:22 am

I don’t stick to a set schedule for rest days as of now, I just always take 2 per week (sometimes 3 if you count a light yoga day). When I start marathon training I’ll have to have a plan and stick to it unless something like a severe summer storm happens though!

    • [email protected] says

      February 29, 2016 at 5:53 pm

Summer thunder storms always mess up my schedule! But there’s no way I’m running when there is lightening.

  11. Suzy says

    February 29, 2016 at 10:39 am

Nice job! Great week of running. How many pushups do you do? I’ve been doing pushups too, and I can manage 30 of them. Well, I do 15, take a break, 10, break and then 5.

    • [email protected] says

      February 29, 2016 at 5:54 pm

Usually between 20 and 45… If I’m doing 45 I break up into 3 sets of 15. Sometimes I will do them on the bosu or with the TRX to change things up.

  12. Jessie @ The Acquired Sass says

    February 29, 2016 at 11:25 am

I definitely schedule around the weather to a certain extent. I used to always take a rest day on Wednesdays. But that usually doesn’t happen anymore. I try to move them to when I need them based on my workouts or other life stuff. But on days when the weather rocks I always try my best to get outdoors. Run, walk, hike, bike, ANYTHING!

    • [email protected] says

      February 29, 2016 at 5:55 pm

That makes sense! Now that we are getting some better weather I am doing the same thing. Id much rather take advantage of the warmer days and rest when it’s not as nice out!

  13. Pam says

    February 29, 2016 at 11:35 am

I always schedule my long runs around the weekend weather forecast since I can be flexible. Great job running so many miles last week and enjoying being outside. There is nothing better than springtime for runners!

I try to plan around the weather bc I have the choice of using a treadmill or braving the cold.

    • [email protected] says

      February 29, 2016 at 5:56 pm

Its good to have the treadmill as a back up plan but it’s even better to get outside on the nicer days:)

  15. Sarah @ BucketListTummy says

    February 29, 2016 at 1:34 pm

I think my rest days depend alot on the weather. Like you said, I don’t want to pass up a beautiful sunny day to run outside! What hip strengthening exercises do you do? Just curious, my hip has been bothering me lately.

    • [email protected] says

      February 29, 2016 at 6:00 pm

For hip exercises I do side steps with a band, side lying left lifts, bridges with a band, and some one-legged squats. I’ve also started doing hip flexor exercises (standing knee drives) with a band because I am noticing my left side is much weaker! The myrtle routine is great too!

Oh man you know I schedule around the weather! My best workout was my speed work. I felt very confident after that. Then two days later my tempo run su-u-u-u-cked so I need a good workout again to balance everything out. Hopefully tomorrow am my 8 miler will go well. 🙂

Nice weekly mileage and pace! I am trying to work my way up there. I do not even have to plan around weather (it’s always run weather here) I just need to plan better around my excuses. Have another great week!!

    • [email protected] says

      February 29, 2016 at 6:01 pm

Sometimes our excuses can be more difficult to deal with than the weather:) Good luck!

    February 29, 2016 at 3:34 pm

I’m the same way with March! Haha every year I’m like yay spring here it comes! And then it’s usually just three-four more weeks of absolute winter lol.

    • [email protected] says

      February 29, 2016 at 6:02 pm

I’m really not happy about seeing snow in the forecast for Friday! Snow in March just isn’t right!

  19. Jenn @ Dashing in Style says

    February 29, 2016 at 8:14 pm

You mean it’s not going to magically get warmer in March?! Darn! I totally want it to! Same here though–no snow/ice to deal with, so at least there’s that. Glad you got some good workouts in!

    • [email protected] says

      March 1, 2016 at 7:19 pm

I know right?! And today was a tease because it was nice and warm before we get more snow later in the week.

I schedule a lot of my runs around the weather. I am lucky to have the flexibility in my job to be able to do that. Hope that March gets warmer sooner than later.

    • [email protected] says

      March 1, 2016 at 7:20 pm

Its definitely nice to be able to run when the weather is good!

  21. Tricia@MissSippipiddlin says

    March 1, 2016 at 10:16 am

I do admire those who can follow a plan to the “T”, but I like variety and some days I’m feeling better and more motivated than others. I try not to let an “meh” day keep me from running but I’ll change it up if I need to due to weather or schedules. I try and run in the mornings and not much gets in the way at that time except weather. And down here, if rain is in the forecast, it is more than likely gonna rain in the afternoons.

    • [email protected] says

      March 1, 2016 at 7:10 pm

If I see thunderstorms in the forecast I will definitely plan around that. Or if I have a hard workout I try not to do it when its gonna be super windy.

  22. Rachael @ Catch Me if You Can says

    March 1, 2016 at 3:48 pm

my rest days are usually fridays and i tend to always take them. between work and life and travel i need that 1 day lol. although if its a gorgeous day ill either take the dogs for a walk or sit outside on our patio and enjoy the day 🙂 you should share your hip exercises, thats my area of work right now!

    • [email protected] says

      March 1, 2016 at 7:18 pm

Its nice to get outside in the good weather even on a rest day! I will try to share my exercises at some point…I change them so much I will have to figure out what the best routine is to share!

  23. HoHo Runs says

    March 1, 2016 at 8:39 pm

Monday is usually a rest day as I like to run on both weekend days. I don’t want to give up that time outside! I do check the weather and make adjustments to my running days if necessary. But in the south, “bad” weather is more likely an issue in the late afternoon. I’d like to hear how you will be working on speed. That is something I’ve just gotten back into. My speed has suffered over the last (almost) year. Thanks for linking up with us Lisa!

    • [email protected] says

      March 2, 2016 at 6:25 am

Lately I have enjoyed running on both days of the weekend too! Its nice to get more time outside when its light out and then sleep in a little more during the week.
I am planning to share my speed workout from last week on my blog tomorrow! Before that I was just doing fartleks, so just added a few minutes of harder intervals into a run once a week.

I’ve been dealing with a nagging calf so I took about a week and a half off from running. I’ve really been enjoying my strength training workouts! My rest day varies every week these days!

    • [email protected] says

Sorry about your calf! As you know I enjoy strength training too. But sometimes its tough for me to get motivated to do those kinds of workouts!

Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 mile MP/1 mile easy. I took a few hours of PTO in the morning to do this on the trail because I knew wouldn’t be able to do it this weekend. This was my first time on the trail since my marathon last November. It was nice to be back there and the perfect place to do this kind of long run. It was the kind of run where you start thinking “ok cool I just did a tough MP workout” but then you remember you actually need to run 26 miles in a row at that pace. Luckily there’s still 9 more weeks of training…although that doesn’t really sound like that much!
41 miles for the week and got in 2 strength sessions. Taking it easy this weekend other than chasing the kids around for all their activities! #run #marathontraining #longrun
It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It is a little frustrating to have to plan more time for an easy run. But it’s definitely worth it to recover quicker and feel better on workout days! #run #marathongtraining #easyrun
You know marathon training is starting to get real You know marathon training is starting to get real when you start losing track of what training week it is. I had to check my calendar but this was week 6, so 10 weeks to go!

I ran the Charles Street 12 last weekend so this week was all about easy miles and recovering from the race. That went well until I went and ran all the hills yesterday followed by walking around a maze and fun park for 5 hours. I got in some strength and mobility this morning and now I’m back to focusing on recovery!

If you’re training for a race how many weeks do you have left?

#run #runner #marathontraining #richmondmarathon
15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 9 15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 91% humidity 🫠 Pretty sure that was harder than my race last weekend, but got it done. Now off to my second workout of the day- taking the kids to an outdoor fun park. RIP to my legs.
What are you up to this weekend?
