Desperate For Spring Running Weather

Is anyone else feeling like it is still March? Between the weather and being home for two months straight I sort of feel like time is standing still. How is Memorial Day in a few weeks? Shouldn’t I be running in short and tanks tops every day now? Some years by this time I am already complaining about the heat and humidity. I might be enjoying this more if it didn’t mean I was stuck inside most days with a toddler because of all the rain and wind we have had! At this point I am desperate for spring running weather, and warmer/sunnier days.

After weeks of cool, rainy, and windy weather, I am feeling desperate for spring running weather. Here are my workouts from last week. #running #workouts

Stay At Home Updates

As some states have started to ease their restrictions, things are pretty much status quo here. Our governor did start to allow some outdoor activities like golfing and camping this weekend. We are supposed to get an update this week to find out if we can move into Phase 1 of our recovery plan, which would ease some of the restrictions starting next week. We found out schools would be closed for the rest of the year (no surprise there) and now I am just wondering what will happen this summer and fall. It’s all such a waiting game.

new shoes

I hate now knowing what I am doing in terms of running, but at this point I am not counting on doing any fall races. Even if they happen I have a feeling I would be too nervous to participate in a large event like that. So now I am just trying to decide how I want to structure my training. I am sort of leaning towards focusing on strength, then building mileage, then choosing a virtual race to do. I guess the nice thing is that I don’t need to put a timeline on any of that.

Weekly Run Down

Monday: Strength Training
Tuesday: 5 Miles + Core
Wednesday: 3 Miles + Strength Training
Thursday: 4 Stroller Miles
Friday: 4.5 Miles + Hip/Glute Exercises
Saturday: Yoga
Sunday: 6 Miles

Nothing too exciting happened this week in terms of my running. I didn’t do any virtual races or hard workouts. The weather wasn’t great so I kind of structured my outdoor runs around that.

Brooks shirt

#irunwithmaud

On Friday I did sort of a fartlek run. I purposely ran on Friday to honor Ahmad Arbery, who I am sure you all know about by now. After a 1 mile warm up I ran 2.23 miles of 2 minutes hard/1 minutes easy, and a 1  mile cool down. I really didn’t do the workout hard because I was more focused on thinking about what happened. There are many things that I am nervous about when I go out to run, especially as a female runner. But I don’t know what it is like to have to fear for my safety due to the color of my skin. I have found it helpful to read all the posts over the past few days as I know I have a lot to learn about these issues. No one should go out for a run and not get to go home, but this situation goes much deeper than just running.

Winter Returns

I was very disappointed to see that winter returned on Friday night and Saturday morning had a real feel of 29 degrees. (Can I just say again that I am desperate for spring running weather? I want to throw on shorts and a t-shirt and get nice and sweaty out on a run.) On Saturday I did yoga since I had already run 4 days in a row.

GPS Running Art

On Sunday it was once again chilly, with a real feel of 31 degrees. I was tempted to run on the treadmill but had planned to make some GPS art for a Brooks Running challenge. So I bundled up and got out there. The first few miles were really chilly. Initially I had planned on doing 8-9 miles. As I started I decided to do more like 4-5. In the end I settled on 6.

Sunday Sunday

Here is the dinosaur I made with my GPS. I basically just looked at the routes I could run and tried to find a picture to draw. Grayson is obsessed with dinosaurs so maybe that’s why it caught my attention.

Anyway, I know there have been other years when it was cold, rainy, and windy all spring so I know this isn’t THAT unusual. The whole pandemic/quarantine situation just makes it that much worse. I know that soon enough we will be complaining about the heat.

    Sorry about the weather!
I guess it won’t help if I tell that over here in Europe, we’ve had non-stop beautiful weather. So much so that we were desperate for rain, which finally arrived last week. Having said that, your weather usually comes over here, so I guess we’re in for more bad weather 😉
Love your dinosaur! That’s a great idea!

Hopefully you don’t get our weather! However, it might warm up this weekend so that’s something to look forward to.

Nice GPS art. I haven’t tried to figure that out, but I might have to try. The weather is nuts, and it looks like we will jump from February to July with temps in the 80s this coming weekend. I’ll be washing tank tops and gloves in the same week!

I know, isn’t it crazy? I saw some really impressive GPS art over the past couple of days. It seems like alot of work!

Yep I’m waiting out the rain and 30’s right now before I start my run. Hang it there, shorts and tank top weather can’t be that much further away.

Yes, I’m with you on the weather! One of my go-to phrases is “I want my summer back!” We have rain coming mid-week, then 70F temps for awhile after that. I haven’t checked to see what the wind is supposed to be doing, though LOL.

The wind can be the worst! Its supposed to hit 80 here this weekend, but I also saw we might have thunderstorms.

Our running club had a contest to see who could come up with the most creative GPS route–one of the members was so creative, she ended up on the news! I’m not that person, lol.

    Yes, bring on spring! please….

Wow! I had a really hard time with the GPS art, so it was best to keep it simple.

The weather on Saturday actually reminded me of February lol. I already packed away all of my winter running clothes so I had to do my runs on the treadmill. It was fine, but never thought I would need winter running clothes in May!

My run on Friday was pretty emotional but I was very happy to see the running community get behind such an important cause.

      May 11, 2020 at 7:15 pm

You wouldn’t think you would need winter clothes in May! Hopefully thats the last really cold day we have until next year.

Great week! Yes, I also ran for Ahmaud…such a tragedy. I’m glad the running community made something positive out of it, but I hope justice is actually served in some meaningful way.

I couldn’t believe how cold it was! I was glad that I was able to avoid it and stay indoors lol. My family in Buffalo had snow so I can’t complain!

Absolutely desperate for spring weather. Period. But ti’s coming, it really is!

I think I kinda feel the same way. I hate not adding a state this year, but I don’t think we’re going to be comfortable traveling for race. It is what it is.

      May 11, 2020 at 7:19 pm

Considering how slow we will need to go to reopen everything, Im just not hopeful we will be able to race this year. It just seems too risky.

I’ve never tried GPS running art, but I’d like to! It always looks so cool! I also ran on Friday for Ahmaud. It really is sad that we still have situations like that happening in this day and age.

As far as weather, I’m good with it in the 50s and 60s in the morning, which is very rare for this late in the year in Florida! But that’s going away soon- this weekend it’s supposed to be back to hot and humid. I’ve had some amazing runs so far I hope that can continue but I don’t know with the return of the humidity.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 11, 2020 at 7:20 pm

I bet having cooler weather in Florida is a good thing! I would definitely take 50s and 60s in the morning right now!

I actually thought it was gorgeous out yesterday! I also go a lot later than you do. When I went out at 10:30 it was perfect at 55. It has been a wacky few weeks weather wise with all the rain and cool temps. My allergies are out of control w the tree pollen!

The weather was similar in Indiana – we had frost some mornings even! I do not think I am creative to try GPS running art. I’m always so impressed when I see the images people can make on their routes!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 11, 2020 at 7:22 pm

Its hard to plan out the art! And I think doing anything complicated would be really hard. I was thinking if I did anything that involved alot of specific turns I would probably need to write out my route or something.

Cute dinosaur! I’m supposed to be doing a virtual duathlon this week, but the weather looks miserable. I need something to get me excited about doing it in this weather. Blah. The stores and salons will start opening here in Ohio tomorrow. It’s going to be interesting to see what happens!

I love your GPS dinosaur! So cute!

Living in Florida, I can’t say that I am every excited for spring. Spring usually feels like summer here. Ugh.

Great week of workouts for you, all the same! I don’t know what’s going to happen with races here. It seems like we might see some? But then again, who knows.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 12, 2020 at 4:18 am

Hmm maybe some of the smaller ones will be able to happen? I don’t know, they just seem so difficult to control. As much as you might try to tell people to stay 6 feet apart is it really even possible in a race? And would we have to run with masks? That would be rough.

  15. Marcia says

    May 12, 2020 at 2:08 pm

I think you nailed it when you said it feels like time is suspended. I feel like we’re in this holding pattern but yet the unofficial start to summer is sneaking up on us. I love the long daylight now but it’s so cold we’re not able to be out really enjoying it. Love the dino art!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 12, 2020 at 7:17 pm

I totally agree! It kind of looks like it should be warm out, its so deceiving.

You had some good workouts and I love your GPS dinosaur – very cute!

Even though Virginia is going to phase 1 tomorrow, Loudoun county is one of the few that won’t be moving on so nothing will be changing for me.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 15, 2020 at 4:05 am

We are in a similar situation here. Maryland’s orders are being lifted as of tonight but Baltimore county is one of the ones that are still keeping everything closed. I’m ok with it as I would like our numbers to go down more, but I also know people who are out of work are struggling.

Great job on that GPS art! I would love to do one but wouldn’t know where to start. It is now Friday and it is beginning to feel like Spring. It rained most of the day yesterday and then warmed up in the evening. I really doubt there will be any Fall races so I am not making plans for any of them. My goal was to PR this year so now it will have to be next year.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 16, 2020 at 4:11 am

Thats how I’m feeling about my goal races. I’m trying to just remember that this will give me more time to really build strength and speed for whenever we do get back to racing.

Alright, my last post about the Richmond Marathon Alright, my last post about the Richmond Marathon (maybe). This one is about lessons learned/areas for improvement.

1) Starting in the right corral- I knew I wanted to start a little slow but I think I started too far back and I ended up boxed in later in the race.

2) Increasing fueling- I think I did the best I could on this day but now that I know more about what works/doesn’t work for me I think I can try to get my carbs/hr a little higher for next time

3) Self-doubt- On paper I knew my training showed I could run a certain time. My coach knew I could run a certain time. But deep down did I believe I could run that time? I’m not really sure.

4) My right piriformis- This little muscle has been giving me trouble FOREVER and it likes to rear its ugly head the most during races. I’m working with a PT but it’s hard to address the issue when I can go months without any problems and then at mile 15 of a marathon it starts acting up. So while this is certainly an area for improvement I am not really sure what I’ll be able to do to keep it from happening next time.

5) Ignore the data leading up to the race- During race week my sleep scores were horrible, my HRV tanked, and my watch told me I was “strained”. I might just stop wearing it during the taper next time.

What lessons have you learned during a marathon or big race?

@richmondmarathon #racerecap
It’s been 5 days since the Richmond Marathon and i It’s been 5 days since the Richmond Marathon and it feels like a lifetime ago! I am working on my full race recap which I will post on my website but I wanted to share some reflections on here. Today I want to focus on what went well. Every finish line is an accomplishment, and while every race can teach us something I think it’s always important to focus on the positive.

First off, Richmond was a great race with amazing crowd support! There were some hills (a few steeper than I expected) but nothing crazy.

Fueling went well- after my train wreck of a run a few weeks ago I had to adjust my fueling plan and took out the Tailwind High Carb and went back to regular Skratch instead. I tried to make up for the difference with gels but my overall carbs per hour was a little less than it had been when using the Tailwind. I think I got about 65 g/hour so I’d like to get that up a bit next time but I didn’t get nauseous and took gels up until the end of the race.

Shoes felt good- during that same training run I had some top of foot soreness from my laces. I changed my lacing technique and had no issues on race day.

Mindset- I did a lot of work preparing for the race mentally and was able to use those strategies during the race. I focused on one mile at a time and shifted my goals when I knew my original goal was not going to happen.

Pacing- Even though I didn’t run my goal pace I was able to run fairly consistently without drastically slowing down at the end.

Recovery- I felt pretty good following the race and wasn’t even sore anymore by Tuesday. This was probably the least sore I’ve been after a marathon.

Strong training cycle- this year I feel like I’ve been clawing my way back to where I was a year ago after several illnesses last winter and spring. I had a great training cycle with @lauranorrisrunning and I know I’ve made more progress than my race time shows.

Marathons are a huge investment so I really tried to make the most of the experience!

@richmondmarathon #racerecap
Happy Medal Monday! I can’t believe the Richmond M Happy Medal Monday! I can’t believe the Richmond Marathon was only 2 days ago. I’m barely sore (probably because I was trained for a faster time than I ran) and am feeling good.

I included a list of my marathon times on the last slide here, which I posted in my stories yesterday. I got some messages about how others can relate to feeling like their times “reset” at a certain point- whether it was after an injury, having kids, or just time off from running.

I think we can get so caught up in PRs that it may take away from the overall progress made in the process of training. Sure, there are runners who come back from having kids and immediately set a new lifetime PR. But many of us will need to chip away at our times to get to where we want to be.

Focusing on progress and the gains made in a training cycle vs a specific race time can help to keep things in perspective!

Now, I’m trying to figure out spring racing plans. What’s everyone running this spring?

#medalmonday
What a day! This race (and really, this week) was What a day! This race (and really, this week) was a rollercoaster. I knew pretty early on that my legs and my lungs were not feeling my goal pace. Each time I sped up it felt really hard- way too hard to not even be at 10 miles yet. So I just focused on running the effort that my body would allow. I used all the mental strategies I had to get through each mile. Ultimately, I wanted to run faster than my marathon last November, which I did by almost 2 minutes, making this a postpartum PR. More importantly, I smiled almost the whole time.

After finishing we had to rush to get out of our hotel room and spent the whole afternoon driving home. Over the past 2 days I’ve spent almost 10 hours in the car.

More to come soon…just hoping to get home and get some rest soon!
