A Little Bit Goes a Long Way

This week I was reminded that a little bit goes a long when when you really focus on quality workouts. Almost every day I felt like I was starting my workout later than planned and had to prioritized what I could get done. Looking back on the week, I feel like I still got in a good mix of cardio, strength, and mobility, and was even a little bit sore from my strength workouts.

A Little Bit Goes a Long Way

Monday: 3 miles + stability work

I started out with about 20 minutes of stability work and then had enough time to run 3 miles. I have really been loving the sunrises this time of year! Too bad it’s going to be dark again for my runs this week thanks to Daylight Savings Time.

Monday sunrise

Tuesday: 45 minutes spinning + lower body workout

I started this workout later than planned and wasn’t sure if I should spend less time on the bike in order to have 30 minutes for legs. Instead, I ended up just spending about 15 minutes on legs but focused on bigger muscles like hamstrings, quads, and glutes. I felt it the next day so I figure it must have been a decent workout.

spinning

Wednesday: 10 minutes on bike + TRX upper body workout

I woke up at 4:30 to find out that my blog was completely down. I couldn’t even get into my dashboard to see what was going on. Luckily someone from Bluehost was available to chat at that time of day. At first they said it was fine and they were seeing my site. Then they realized that one of my plugins was causing an issue, so they were able to disable it.

When I finally got downstairs to work out I was a little frazzled. I warmed up on the bike and then just had time for 20 minutes of upper body. I ended up using the TRX so got in a little core work as well. Once again, I felt it the next day.

TRX

Thursday: 3.5 miles + core work

I did my core work first as a warm up (and so I didn’t skip it) and then headed out for my run. It was a nice morning for a run…little did I know how ridiculously cold it was about to get.

Thursday run

Friday: 35 minutes Pilates + Yoga

I used my Pilates for Runners DVD and then did the JasYoga back reset video. By the end of the week I feel like my upper body is so tight from sitting at work all week so this felt really good.

Pilates

Saturday: 6.3 miles

It got cold again. The real feel was 17 degrees. It was nice to have spring weather in February, but this is just ridiculous. I would have rather it be cold in February and warm now. They are calling for 5-8 inches of snow Monday into Tuesday. While I wouldn’t mind a snow day, I am really over winter at this point.

cold run

Sunday: Rest

WEEKLY SUMMARY
Running: 3 runs, 12.8 miles
Yoga/Mobility: 1 short yoga session, lots of foam rolling
Strength Training: 1 upper body workout, 1 lower body workout, 1 Pilates DVD workout

Lately it feels like every week is busier than the last. I’ll need to continue prioritizing effective workouts for the days when I’m short on time. By the way- I’ve still been meditating every night. I count that as a workout for my brain.

How were your workouts last week?
How do you prioritize your workouts when your short on time?
Is is supposed to snow this week where you live?

I probably should take up meditating too, I’m just not where to fit it into my schedule! hah

Your weekly recap has motived me to be much more on top of my workouts this week despite my schedule, which I anticipate being really busy again. I am going to try and take your advice to only stay late one or two nights. Maybe if I put in a long day on Monday and Friday, I can lesson the burden Tues-Thurs… which would work out okay since Mondays and Fridays are my non-running days.

This week is finally supposed to warm up! We had about a foot of snow last week and cold! By Saturday they are calling for 70 degrees! That should melt any snow that is left by then. I hate daylight savings.. so sad to go back to dark mornings. Looks like you had a great week. I have a trx system but I havent used it in a long time, I should dig it out.

The TRX is a great way to change things up! Thats awesome that your weather is improving. We have snow today, but hopefully this is the end of winter…

It is currently snowing here! ANd it is supposed to be pretty warm the end of the week, so that is going to be fun… not. I’m giving myself extra time to get to work this morning. Great job on your workouts–you a right–quality over quantity!

Great job fitting in your workouts when you are short on time! I usually just forgo them when I am. I need to be better at that. Because something is better than nothing. I wish I had a workout area in my condo. I think that would make it easier. Love your basement!

Working out at home definitely makes it easier to do even a short workout when I don’t have a lot of time.

      March 14, 2017 at 7:09 am

Exactly! Im used to doing my regular workouts so it can be stressful to have less time, but a shorter workout can be good too!

you know I am over the snow too! I stopped even listening to what the blizzard is about to bring. I did hear up to 2 feet but whatever at this point – any amount is annoying me! lol. I am a little short on time these days too during the week so I really have to focus on making the minutes count. once summer comes, it will get easier for me (when my son is no longer on this school schedule). I think I used to get up earlier so it didn’t affect me but lately I want to sleep later and take my time in the morning!

Nice job on all your workouts last week!

Way to work it all in! I started meditating with the Calm app! Lately my weekends have been sheer chaos so longish runs have been swapped to a weekday. Still I’m glad I’m not in serious marathon training because I’d never fit in big miles right now. We had 4″ on the ground when I got up at 5 this morning and it’s supposed to snow all the through until lunchtime Tuesday. Go us.

We had to move around Rob’s training this week because of the snow. Not sure how bad it will get today but we have a couple inches now and the rest of the day is supposed to be a mix of snow and sleet. Hope you are liking the Calm app!

March and April are the snowiest months in Boulder, but it’s definitely spring weather right now. It’s fooling me into thinking we’re past the winter weather, but I know it’s just a matter of time before we get a blizzard again. We got one in January, then a little bit of snow in February, but the big spring blizzard is still to come.

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
