Philadelphia Marathon Training Week 3

This was a hot and humid week, but still a pretty good one. Hopefully running in this weather will make the cooler weather feel easier!

Here’s how week 3 looked:

Philadelphia Marathon Training Week of 8/31-9/6:

Sunday 8/31: Rest: Wine, compression, and Divergent

sunday

Monday 9/1: 6.2 miles easy (9:47 pace), core

monday

Tuesday 9/2: 6.3 miles with 3 at 7:59, 7:56, 7:54, and 6 hill repeats (average overall pace 8:46), PM: 60 minutes hot yoga

tuesday

Wednesday 9/3: 3.31 miles easy (9:25 pace), strength workout

wednesday

Thursday 9/4: 7.1 miles with 7 x 800s (3:27, 3:25, 3:27, 3:20, 3:31, 3:28, 3:28) (average overall pace 8:16)

thursday

Friday 9/5: 3 miles easy (didn’t track pace), core

friday

Saturday 9/6: 12.7 miles (Baltimore Running Festival training run) (8:40 pace with last 3 miles @ 7:59, 8:00, 7:51) I can’t even begin to complain about all the things that made this run ridiculously hard- maybe more on that another day.

training run

Total: 38.61 miles

This weekly mileage was a little bump up from the last few, even though my long run was cut back a little. This was my third week of doing similar workouts and it was nice to be able to see some progress. The 800s were definitely the hardest workout of the week and I am glad to be done with them for now but I could definitely see improvement each week as I was able to hold the same pace but add on another set.

Next week will be mile repeats and tempo runs- a whole new kind of fun! I’m sure I will be dreading those workouts soon enough.

How were your workouts this week?

Did you feel like the humidity causes you to slow down?

It may have been humid as balls for you but the scenery is amazing! Good job on another week down!

Thanks! Yea the scenery’s not bad:) I think I would rather hot and humid than freezing cold and snow/ice!

Humidity REALLY slows me down and makes me feel all around miserable and (almost) hate running! Great job on the 800s!

Thanks! I always feel like I can’t go as fast in the humidity. Rob is convinced it affects him more than me. It might, but I do think in general it just make running feel harder!

Had runs are the worst but I think actually making it through one really toughens you up mentally and shows you what you can achieve – all good preparation for race day! I live in London so thankfully humidity is never really an issue, it’s just dealing with the rain and freezing cold which accounts for more than 99% of England’s weather!

I’m sure before we know it I will be complaining about the cold weather here! I think you are right that those tough runs make us stronger. Hopefully runs in the humidity will make cooler runs feel easier!

Ooo how is Divergent!? I’m finally just got around to reading the book! The humidity affects me differently on different days, even if the % is the same. I think it depends on the type of workout I’m doing. I feel like it affects me more on tempo days and less on interval days probably due to getting to slow down a bit on the recovery parts and sometimes it’s easier to click of intervals in your head than to think about how many more miles of a tempo you have haha. Great week of workouts! Wishing you the best on your mile repeats this next week! 🙂

I really liked Divergent! I read the book about 2 years ago so I kind of forgot exactly what happened but I thought the movie was really good. That’s interesting about how humidity affects you, I never really thought about that!

Humidity definitely makes me slow dow, no doubt! And so sweet, those who relax wearing compression sock together stay together 😉

Haha yes, I think I am lucky to be married to a runner who doesn’t think its (too) weird when I hang around in compression!

Humidity is more of a pace killer than heat for me. Running out in the dry heat in Nevada is so nice compared to what we have here on the east coast! I’m SO over 80% humidity!!

Great week of training for you though despite the humidity! Way to get it!

I don’t know if I have ever run in dry heat but I have heard others say the same thing before. The humidity really does make running feel harder! The east coast has such terrible humidity:(

Today’s humidity made me angry and want to cry. And I Looove humidity. Even when running. But today was a special case of awful-ness!!!! I really want the weather we had back in July and August back, please!! You had an amazing week of training!!! GREAT JOB!! I’m going to do 800s this week. It’s my goal. How long are you running for recovery between each set? I haven’t decided if I want to do a 400 between each, an 800, or more like a Yasso style recovery. So many running choices! 😉
I especially love the wine/compression pic for you and Rob! So cute!!! It has always been my dream to run a marathon with my husband! (Please note…he doesn’t run!) lucky girl!!

I think you are the only person who has ever said they love running in humidity! But I guess there are limits for everything, right? I guess we were spoiled with the summer weather and its hanging around a bit longer this year.
For my 800s the first week I did Yasso 800s style (the same time recovery as interval) but the second week I cut it down a little to see how I felt…I was typically jogging for about 3 minutes after each set. And for third week (this past week) I did a little more than 400 meters of recovery- mostly just to save time with the workout in general! I think the key is to just make sure you get enough recovery to hit the goal pace. In my opinion its better to take 3:30 recoveries and run all your 800s in 3:30 or less than to only do 400 meter recovery but have your intervals take longer.
You know its definitely interesting being married to another runner- I mean there are alot of good things (like he doesn’t think its weird that I wear compression stuff all the time and constantly roll around on my foam roller) but our laundry is AWFUL and its like all we talk about haha…I think other people must think we are boring to be around:)

Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 mile MP/1 mile easy. I took a few hours of PTO in the morning to do this on the trail because I knew wouldn’t be able to do it this weekend. This was my first time on the trail since my marathon last November. It was nice to be back there and the perfect place to do this kind of long run. It was the kind of run where you start thinking “ok cool I just did a tough MP workout” but then you remember you actually need to run 26 miles in a row at that pace. Luckily there’s still 9 more weeks of training…although that doesn’t really sound like that much!
41 miles for the week and got in 2 strength sessions. Taking it easy this weekend other than chasing the kids around for all their activities! #run #marathontraining #longrun
It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It is a little frustrating to have to plan more time for an easy run. But it’s definitely worth it to recover quicker and feel better on workout days! #run #marathongtraining #easyrun
You know marathon training is starting to get real You know marathon training is starting to get real when you start losing track of what training week it is. I had to check my calendar but this was week 6, so 10 weeks to go!

I ran the Charles Street 12 last weekend so this week was all about easy miles and recovering from the race. That went well until I went and ran all the hills yesterday followed by walking around a maze and fun park for 5 hours. I got in some strength and mobility this morning and now I’m back to focusing on recovery!

If you’re training for a race how many weeks do you have left?

15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 9 15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 91% humidity 🫠 Pretty sure that was harder than my race last weekend, but got it done. Now off to my second workout of the day- taking the kids to an outdoor fun park. RIP to my legs.
What are you up to this weekend?
