Route 66 Marathon Training Week 16

I’m writing most of this post on Saturday, the day before my race, because I am sitting around with nothing else to do. After the race I’m planning to add in the results before this publishes. I feel like this week of training was kind of boring, and the actual race is the “important” part of this week, but I do think my runs this week were worth talking about. They were simple- 3 really easy 4 milers on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, with no strength training at all. I think that there were a few factors involved but I felt so tired on those few runs I did this week. Which made it easier to go super slow, so I guess that’s a good thing!

weekly workout recap

Monday: 4 miles easy

After feeling really great on Saturday’s run, I expected it was going to be difficult to keep this run nice and slow. However, I easily settled into a pace slower than 10 minute miles and actually didn’t have the desire to go any faster than that.

monday

Tuesday: Rest

Wednesday: 4 miles easy

The night before we had gone to my parents after work for dinner, and got home after 9. So naturally I was tired for this run (usually I am asleep by 9) and I think all the extra time in the car left me feeling extra stiff. My mindset was not great after this run, but I kept telling myself that this was normal for race week plus I had a few more days to rest up.

Thursday: Rest

Friday: 4 miles easy

This was done before flying out to Tulsa. I felt 95% better than I did on Wednesday, but still kept it slow and easy. It was definitely a boost of confidence as I got closer to the race.

Saturday: Rest

Went to the expo….

And hung out in compression socks for most of the day…

Sunday: Race day!

26.2 miles in 3:41:46… Race recap to come later this week, but this was a 5 minute PR!

Total: 38.2 miles

Do you ever feel tired on your runs the week leading up to a race?

Congratulations on a 5 minute PR Lisa! That’s incredible. I hope you enjoyed Route 66. It will be back on my list for next year! I can’t wait to hear the details. The older you get, those car rides really do make you stiff. I dread our Thanksgiving travel for that reason. I think feeling tired the week leading up to the race is normal. It means you’ve put in a lot of hard work. Kudos for not trying to push it. It looks like it paid off! I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and I appreciate you linking with us.

What compression socks do you wear? I need more compression to help with my calves and want more options.

I wear PRO Compression! They are definitely my favorite- so comfortable and I really feel like they help me to recover faster.

Congrats on your PR, Lisa!! I’m glad you had a great race – can’t wait to hear all about it! You’re definitely not the only one who struggles with the “easy” runs leading up to the race. For my past few marathons, I remember most of those short mileage runs feeling not so “easy” and just trying to remain relaxed and not think about it so much.

    • [email protected] says

      November 24, 2015 at 7:00 am

Thanks Charissa! It’s good to hear I’m not alone on that. And now that the race is over,I am so glad I kept those runs easy. It was helpful to type out my thoughts about those runs pre-race because that’s when I was feeling those doubts about how I had felt. But it definitely all made sense!

They actually weren’t as bad as I expected. I should have been better about foam rolling and stretching but instead we jumped in the car and drove 2 hours to our in-laws on Sunday. But I’ve been doing alot of resting so that has helped:)
