Route 66 Marathon Training Weeks 1&2

Hi there! After the longest blogging break I’ve taken in a while, I’m back. Sort of. I’ll probably be somewhat sporadic this week as I have a bunch of other things going on, along with trying to catch up on life after vacation. Thanks again to Meredith and Laura for guest posting while I was away- if you missed their posts you should definitely check them out!

Should Runners Take Ice Baths?

I thought I would pop in today and share how my first two weeks of training went. Well, they weren’t at all what I had planned, that’s for sure! Since the last time I posted I got pretty sick, enough to keep me from running for a full week! That hasn’t happened in a long time. I’m somewhat recovered but this upcoming week will be relatively easy as I ease my way back into training.

weekly workout recap

Week 1 (8/3-8/9)

Monday: 3 miles easy, core/hips

Tuesday: Strength training

strength

Wednesday: 6 miles with 8 x 400s with 200m recovery

Thursday: 3 miles easy, core/hips….This run felt great, but a few hours later was when I started to notice a sore throat.

thursday

Friday: 5 miles with 3 at MGP….The sore throat wasn’t too bad but made the run feel harder than it should of. It only got worse as the day went on.

Saturday: Off (sick)

Sunday: Off (sick)

Total: 17 miles

Week 2 (8/10-8/16)

Monday: Off (sick)

Tuesday: Off (sick)

Wednesday: Off (sick)

Thursday: Off (sick)

Friday: 3 miles super easy, core/hips…this was a struggle, but I needed a beach run in 2015!

beach sunrise

Saturday: Rest

Sunday: 8 miles

sunday

Total: 11 miles

I probably wouldn’t have even run at all on Friday but it was my last chance to run on the beach. It was pretty bad timing to be sick for my entire vacation, but I did at least get to lay out at the beach and pool and went to dinners with my family. Although I’m feeling better, I still have a nasty cough and not much of a voice.

Hopefully I got any sickness out of the way- better to deal with it now than later on in the training cycle!

As I said I may not be blogging much this week, but I hope to catch up on comments and reading other blogs! I hope everyone else had a better week of training than I did:)

OMG I didn’t realize you were sick the whole time. I am so sorry, ugh the timing! At least you didn’t have to work and had a chance to relax. Thanks again for letting me share that post! Hopefully you are totally on the mend now and have a great week of running again.

      August 17, 2015 at 1:27 pm

Yes I am definitely on the mend! And all that time off definitely got me excited to run again, so I guess that’s a plus?

So sorry you were sick for that long! I’m always so nervous about that when training but I suppose right at the beginning is the time to get it over with.

That’s what I figure! I still have 14 weeks and last year I only followed a 14 week plan, so Im sure Ill be fine. (Although I feel like I had a better base last year.)

I’m so sorry to hear that you were sick for most of your vacation! At least you were to enjoy a run along the beach. Thank you again for having me guest post—and welcome back!

    • [email protected] says

      August 17, 2015 at 1:28 pm

Yes I was determined to run along the beach at least once! It was rough but I was glad I got out there.

I hope it wasn’t the flu or anything, that wiped me out for more than a week over Christmas. I’m always scared about getting sick during training.

    • [email protected] says

      August 17, 2015 at 1:29 pm

I don’t think it was the flu, but I did go to urgent care and they said it wasn’t strep throat. So it was probably some kind of virus. Knocked me off my feet for over a week though!

I’ve been on a bit of a hiatus too so I’ve got so much to catch up on now! I’m so sorry you were sick on vacation/first weeks of marathon training – that sucks! I usually get sick after coming back from vacation. Hope you feel better soon!

    • [email protected] says

      August 17, 2015 at 1:29 pm

I guess the bright side is I’m getting better now that I’m back:) Although obviously I didn’t want to be sick for vacation either.

Glad you’re feeling better!! I just got over some kind of nasty chest cold as well, and I totally understand how frustrating it can be during training! But rest is just as important:)

    • [email protected] says

      August 17, 2015 at 1:30 pm

I definitely got a lot of rest last week, that’s for sure!

As much as I hate being sick on vacation / not feeling all the runs (experienced this last week on vacation) I try to remember, it’s better to be sick and have time to enjoy the rest and relaxation, then balancing illness/training/work/life/etc. I hope you are having a better start to your week and feel better soon!

    • [email protected] says

      August 17, 2015 at 1:34 pm

I do think it was nice to be able to relax while I recovered. I probably wouldn’t have called out sick the whole week and it would have been really rough going to work like that!

Dammit, you were sick during your vacation? Lisa, that BLOWS. I’m sorry! You’ll get back in on that marathon training plan with a vengeance and do great, I know it. You didn’t miss much on my end. Pretty much the same as usual! Kids, running, more kids, more running, drinking, kids. Kids. More kids.

      August 17, 2015 at 1:35 pm

Thanks- that’s what I am hoping! Running, drinking, kids…sounds about right!

That is the worst! I hate being sick on vacation, and booooooooo. But I guess at least you had the time to rest…..?
Well, glad to have you back, and I hope you are fully recovered so that you can get back to attacking your training plan.

    • [email protected] says

      August 17, 2015 at 1:35 pm

Glad to hear you are doing much better. I got sick the other wk w a sore throat and couldn’t talk. And now I am feeling better but still have this darn cough. Why is it we get sick in the summer when all the fun things are going on?

    • [email protected] says

      August 17, 2015 at 1:35 pm

Sounds like we had the same thing! My throat was so painful, I lost my voice, and now I have a terrible cough. Hopefully this means we will be healthy all winter!

The break from blogging was definitely nice…being sick- not so much. But I do feel more refreshed now that I am almost recovered!

I hope you are feeling back to normal soon! I’m sure it stinks having no voice with school starting back up. I don’t tend to get sick often so I’m lucky I haven’t had to deal with it while training for a big race. I have been sick on vacations before and it was not fun. I ended up being sick after dinner both nights on my family vacation this weekend. It definitely put a little wrench in my mood!

I usually get sick 1-2 times a year. Plus allergies usually hit me pretty hard in the spring. I think its been awhile since I’ve been sick during the summer though!

I hate that you were sick on vacation but, like Jamie mentioned above, at least you had the time off already and didn’t have to worry about getting anything done, etc. I’m glad you were able to get a beach run in before you left, though; what a beautiful view! Hope you are recovering well!

    • [email protected] says

      August 17, 2015 at 4:00 pm

Thanks! Yes, it was like forced relaxation! I was very happy that I got to run on the beach at least once.

      August 18, 2015 at 12:02 pm

Yea, I usually get sick in the winter so this is really strange! Although I am always nervous for late fall marathons because that time of year seems to be when stuff starts going around.

Welcome back! I am sorry you were sick on vacation, that really stinks! 🙁 I don’t get sick a lot but when I do, I do NOT run. I mean, a sniffle is one thing, but like actually sick… ugh. I used to run through it but no more. Life is too short to waste a run when you’re sick!

    • [email protected] says

      August 18, 2015 at 12:03 pm

I know! And it was weird because in the beginning I thought this was just a cold and that I would be able to run through it, but when I woke up on Saturday morning I knew running was not an option.

Boo to being sick! And on vacation? Double boo! Glad to hear you are feeling better. I’ve gotten sick during spring training, it’s annoying only because it feels like you lose a week. Lucky for you it was during your first weeks.

    • [email protected] says

      August 18, 2015 at 12:04 pm

That’s what I keep telling myself. Now the goal is to stay healthy for the next 14 weeks!

  20. Marcia says

    August 17, 2015 at 9:27 pm

What a bummer you were sick the whole vacay! But I guess you got a chance to rest up so there’s a silver lining. I’ve had one of those upper respiratory things that won’t quit twice during training cycles. They really take a toll for a long time. Hope you’re feeling better!

    • [email protected] says

      August 18, 2015 at 12:05 pm

That’s the part I’m most worried about- I know missing a few runs wont be a big deal but I have no idea how long this terrible cough will stick around for!

  21. Hailey says

    August 17, 2015 at 9:42 pm

Oh no! I’m sorry you were sick on your vacation! For some reason, I ended up getting sick on holidays and vacations a lot when I was younger. Never much fun! And you’re right, better now than later on in training. You still have plenty of time 🙂

    • [email protected] says

Uggh, so sorry you were sick. Hopefully you got it out of your system for the rest of the training season! I got sick the first 6 weeks of Paris Marathon training. I didn’t do anything for 6 weeks. It was tough to come back from that!! Welcome back!

    • [email protected] says

      August 18, 2015 at 12:07 pm

6 weeks is so long to be sick! I felt like I would never start to get better, and I was only sick for 10 days!

So sorry that you were sick on vacation. Glad you are easing back in, you don’t want to relapse. When you do feel 100%, your fitness will come back quickly.

I’m so sorry you were sick on vacation! Definitely take it easy and get lots of rest. 14 weeks is plenty of time to train. Sending you lots of healing vibes!

    • [email protected] says

      August 19, 2015 at 8:34 pm

Thank you! I think you are right. Hopefully I am completely back to normal soon!

  25. [email protected] says

    August 19, 2015 at 7:09 am

Sorry to hear you got sick. Losing your voice is no fun and any type of soar throat makes the runs feel so much harder and painful. You are such a dedicated runner, I don’t think your training will suffer that much. Luckily, it happened in the beginning of training. Taking care of your health is priority #1 and then everything else 🙂

    • [email protected] says

      August 19, 2015 at 8:35 pm

Thanks! I think I will have enough time to train, I just wish I could get better a bit faster:) I am definitely trying to rest up as much as possible.

19 miles! 7 on the treadmill, 12 outside, 1,272 to 19 miles! 7 on the treadmill, 12 outside, 1,272 total feet of elevation gain. Amazing weather. Listened to Life of a Showgirl on the treadmill and had some podcasts saved for my outside run but couldn’t get my headphones to connect. This was challenging by the end and I kept thinking how hard it would be if I needed to run another 7 miles today (and all miles at a faster pace) but this is why we train.
