Throwbacks and Thinking Out Loud

It’s Thursdays, so it’s time to share some throwbacks and thinking out loud! Here are just some things on my mind lately that I wanted to share.

I need to start off today’s post with something super random about ketchup. I really am obsessed with ketchup and the other day at dinner Rob caught me holding onto the bottle while we ate. Apparently I need to guard my ketchup with my life and I don’t like to share.

ketchup

Something else I have been obsessed with over the past several years is coffee. We ran out of K-cups over the weekend and I had to wait 2 hours after waking up to be able to get a coffee from Starbucks. Luckily Amazon Prime had delivered more K-cups to Rob’s office and now I am back to enjoying my coffee as soon as I wake up.

Every morning.

One thing I love about Thursdays is the “Throwback Thursday” songs on the radio. Last week I heard a Backstreet Boys song and I was thinking how much more soothing that music is than some of the stuff on the radio today.

finally-old-enough-music-ecard-someecards

However, I was never a Backstreet Boys fan. I’ve mentioned this before but I was a pretty hardcore Hanson fan back in the late 90s.

hanson
MmmBop is still on my iTunes playlist

Speaking of Hanson fans, my friend Alli is getting married tomorrow! Rob and I are heading to Cape Cod later today and I can not wait!

lisa and allí

Whenever I go back to look for old pictures I realize that I have about a million pictures saved but only a handful of them are decent. Alli and I seriously have taken about 500 ridiculous pictures and 5 good/normal ones.

It’s always kind of fun to look back at old pictures, right? We were in college from 2001-2005 so Facebook didn’t exist until around our senior year, so luckily our college pictures did not make it there. I enjoyed reading this article the other day: 10 Things I’m Glad Didn’t Exist When I Was In College.

rob allí

By the way, did you now that Alli introduced Rob and I to each other almost 10 years ago? Time flies.

What are some things you are glad didn’t exist when you were in college?
Are there any random condiments that you are obsessed with?
Hanson or Backstreet Boys?

I was in college when Hanson was popular, loved that song! I get real excited for flashback songs on the radio because I am old. Makes my son laugh. But I feel like all of those 80s/90s songs were from like, yesterday! Facebook totally didn’t exist when I was in college. I mean, we barely used cell phones during my college days which is so weird to me now!

I do feel old when I think about how long ago some songs came out but its definitely fun to hear them and think about what I was doing back when they were popular. We had cell phones in college but I feel like we didn’t use them much for some reason. I guess they were still pretty new and minutes were more expensive.

I was also out of college pre-Facebook. I’m actually REALLY happy about that, because I already had enough ways to distract myself from my studies lol. That said, I don’t have a Facebook now either (I did for a few years but decided I don’t care for it/my blog is already more than enough anybody ever needed to know about me lol).

I’m obsessed with tzatziki, but I don’t love it over here in the UK, which leads me to believe I didn’t actually ever really like tzatziki, because the stuff here is much more authentic and I don’t like it. I also love ketchup. It’s the bomb.

‘N Sync, girl … the one and only boy band I ever cared for (other than Take That because I’ve always been weird and a Euro-American).

I think Facebook would have been such a distraction! Good think it wasn’t around when we were in college!

Definitely Backstreet Boys. I rarely use condiments. My beloved Keurig. I can’t imagine life without it. I keep a hidden stash of K cups just in case 🙂

That’s smart! I should start hiding some K-cups in case on another coffee emergency:)

I am very happy smartphones did not exist in college! Or blogs, at least me writing one. You would fit right in with the ketchup in my house, we’re always fighting over it and wanting refills 🙂 Also I’m with you on the music!

It would have been so weird if blogs were around during college! Imagine all the info you could find out about someone before even meeting them!

Have fun at Alli’s wedding! I didn’t realize she introduced you and Rob. That makes her even more special to you I’m sure! Pretty funny that you consider yourself old for some music, but it happens. There’s nothing like the oldies, and for me that would be anything Motown. I’m not a coffee girl, but I make sure I have plenty of teabags on hand:)

      June 18, 2015 at 2:23 pm

Thanks! Yep, Rob graduated the year before us and Alli interned during senior year at the place where he works. One of the weekends when I went to visit Alli in Baltimore she introduced us!

I’m really glad that selfies didn’t exist when I was in college. Seriously. Sorority girls would never get anything done otherwise.
I have so many pictures from college, but not as many as others (I knew a bunch of serious picture takers, let me tell you) but they are all locked away on my old computer, so inaccessible. Fat lot of good that does me!
And it is adorable that you guard your ketchup 😀

    • [email protected] says

      June 18, 2015 at 2:24 pm

I was definitely the picture-taker of our group back in college, and I was one of the first to have a digital camera which was such a big deal back then!

OK I am dating myself but SO many things did not exist when I was in college–cell phones, FB–people didn’t even have computers in their rooms. I was the only person who had a phone in their room on our dorm floor. We still had the community phone in the hallway and payphones!!! Needless to say, as cameras still used FILM, we didn’t take too many pictures either! NO email–I remember waiting to check my mail on the way to the cafeteria for lunch–Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

It’s so funny to think back on what things were like 10 or 20 or 30 years ago! Even though I wasn’t in college for a lot of what you talked about I definitely remember the days before cell phones and when we had cameras with film. Feels so weird to think about because it doesn’t seem that long ago!

Total BSB fan!! Favorite condiment, hot sauce or salsa. It goes on everything. I even use them as salad dressing on my salads haha. I’m really happy Tinder/other dating apps weren’t available in college. However, I wish Uber was. Haha. Happy Thursday! Have so much fun this weekend : )

    • [email protected] says

      June 18, 2015 at 2:33 pm

Yes it would have been great if uber was around in college! However, then I probably would have needed a smartphone to take full advantage of it:)

I’m also pretty obsessed with ketchup, but it has to be Heinz! I grew up (and still live in) Pittsburgh where the Heinz plant is, so I’m kind of a snob. If it’s not Heinz I won’t eat it! I wasn’t really a fan of BSB or Hanson (I know) but was obsessed with NSync and 98 degrees! I miss all the boy bands!

    • [email protected] says

      June 18, 2015 at 2:34 pm

Heinz is probably the best but I will use probably any kind of ketchup:)

  11. Amanda @ .running with spoons. says

Ketchup is the love of my life and I often joke that I eat my ketchup with a side of food just because of how much of it I use 😛 So I very much, totally understand the clinginess. And I’d have to go with BSB all the way. I wasn’t actually that big on them when they were popular, but I do love me some throwback these days!

    • [email protected] says

      June 18, 2015 at 2:35 pm

The only way my parents could get me to eat anything when I was younger was to put ketchup on all my food! Something about listening to music from the 90s just makes me like it more, even if I wasn’t big on it back then.

    June 18, 2015 at 8:32 am

I’ll raise my hand and say yes, I listened to Hanson, and BSB, and NSYNC. I’m with you on today’s music too, and I slipped a few weeks ago and called a song from middle school an oldie (but goodie).

    • [email protected] says

      June 18, 2015 at 2:37 pm

It’s all so different than the music today! But Im sure adults back then didn’t really like that music though:)

  13. Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says

    June 18, 2015 at 8:36 am

Can I say neither to Hanson or BSBs? I’ve never been a big fan of pop music–you’d cringe if you saw my running playlist! I went to college in the 80s and I find myself gravitating towards music from the 70s-80s now. You know you’re old when the “oldies” stations play music from high school and college. Yikes.

    • [email protected] says

      June 18, 2015 at 2:38 pm

Of course you can say neither! I remember a lot of kids my age even hated that music back when it was popular.

HA ha ha ha! I love that you were clutching onto the ketchup. I go overboard with soy sauce. I corral all the packets into a little pile beside me and go to town. My rice and noodles end up looking like soup. And thank GOD Facebook wasn’t around back then, or I’d probably be in jail right now.

    • [email protected] says

      June 18, 2015 at 2:39 pm

Ha! I think maybe you need to carry your own bottle of soy sauce so you don’t have to deal with that many packets:)

Everyone got Facebook yep, right around 2005ish, which was my freshman year of high school..so unfortunately my 15 year old self lives on in Facebook photos. Then again, I always like to say I’m glad iPhones weren’t around in high school, or at least not ubiquitous, because a life of staring at your screen as you walk down the hall just seems so un-lively to me.

    • [email protected] says

      June 18, 2015 at 2:40 pm

Yea, I can’t imagine that! It would have even been weird to have a smartphone in college I think!

    June 18, 2015 at 9:25 am

Hmm, I remember Hanson but don’t remember loving them. Ditto on the Backstreet Boys…they were both popular when I was in high school so maybe I was just too cool for boy bands by then. 😀 I was really into alternative rock like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Smashing Pumpkins, etc. and then in college I went through an Eric Clapton obsession. Then girl bands like Cheryl Crow.

I am glad Facebook and social media weren’t around when I was in college. There are certain things that should not be photographed and/or shared and college activities are one of them. LOL

I’m also obsessed w/ coffee and I love my Keurig. I buy my K-cups at Menard’s now. They have a good selection & they’re cheap! I love the ones that have a filter bottom instead of a plastic one.

Lisa, you said it! I’m pretty glad Facebook wasn’t around while I was in college, either; in fact, I tried to think about who introduced me to it and I think it was an old high school friend who was trying to get lots of us to join so that we could keep up with one another. There’s always a secret battle at our house if we’re almost out of ketchup; thankfully, I win because my husband is way too nice – ha! I hope you have a super-fun trip!!

    • [email protected] says

      June 18, 2015 at 2:42 pm

I’m obsessed with BBQ sauce at the moment. Maybe it’s because it’s summer, but I can’t stop putting it on salads.
I’m so glad that Tinder or Snapchat didn’t exist when I was in college. But Facebook and Instagram were already big before I graduated, so too many college photos live on in social media.

    • [email protected] says

I should start using more BBQ sauce- that would be a good change from all the ketchup!

I feel like we’re always running out of ketchup here. I should probably just buy two. Have a blast at the wedding! So many of our pics from way back aren’t even digital.

    • [email protected] says

      June 18, 2015 at 2:44 pm

I was thinking that I should start having a back up supply of ketchup in the pantry because I hate when it gets low and I am always worried I will forget to buy more!

  21. Hailey says

    June 18, 2015 at 12:01 pm

Haha I love that you were caught “red-handed” 😉 holder onto the bottle of ketchup! I don’t blame you though, ketchup and yogurt ranch are my fav condiments :). And NSYNC was my first “real” CD (my other ones were literally all Disney movie soundtracks before that one!), so I have to go with them. I think I may have told you this when you first mentioned you liked Hanson, but in high school, we had this week called “stop the bop” where the only time the song stopped was when someone donated money to the charity we were raising money for haha. I may or may not have brought out the old CDs and listened to them on the way to work the other day :).

    • [email protected] says

      June 18, 2015 at 2:44 pm

I do remember you telling me that- that is too funny!
I definitely listen to Hanson on my iPhone in my car from time to time. I used to have it on my race playlists when I used to run with music as well:)

Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 mile MP/1 mile easy. I took a few hours of PTO in the morning to do this on the trail because I knew wouldn’t be able to do it this weekend. This was my first time on the trail since my marathon last November. It was nice to be back there and the perfect place to do this kind of long run. It was the kind of run where you start thinking “ok cool I just did a tough MP workout” but then you remember you actually need to run 26 miles in a row at that pace. Luckily there’s still 9 more weeks of training…although that doesn’t really sound like that much!
41 miles for the week and got in 2 strength sessions. Taking it easy this weekend other than chasing the kids around for all their activities! #run #marathontraining #longrun
It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It is a little frustrating to have to plan more time for an easy run. But it’s definitely worth it to recover quicker and feel better on workout days! #run #marathongtraining #easyrun
You know marathon training is starting to get real You know marathon training is starting to get real when you start losing track of what training week it is. I had to check my calendar but this was week 6, so 10 weeks to go!

I ran the Charles Street 12 last weekend so this week was all about easy miles and recovering from the race. That went well until I went and ran all the hills yesterday followed by walking around a maze and fun park for 5 hours. I got in some strength and mobility this morning and now I’m back to focusing on recovery!

If you’re training for a race how many weeks do you have left?

#run #runner #marathontraining #richmondmarathon
15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 9 15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 91% humidity 🫠 Pretty sure that was harder than my race last weekend, but got it done. Now off to my second workout of the day- taking the kids to an outdoor fun park. RIP to my legs.
What are you up to this weekend?
