Weekly Recap: A Hint of Spring

How is it Monday again already? It feels like I was just writing last week’s weekly recap of my workouts. However, when I look back over the past week it actually has felt rather long, maybe because we have experienced all four seasons over the past few days it seems like. Lately I am constantly checking the weather on my phone because it’s been so unpredictable!

This week was the first time since the fall that I have seen the sun starting to rise while I was running. This makes me feel like spring is coming! (Although once daylight saving time starts the mornings will once again be dark for a few more weeks.) This weekend also brought temps up into the 60s! Such a treat for this time of year, although my only run was on Saturday and it was still in the 30s when I was out there.

Here’s how my workouts looked this week:

snow run

Monday:  4 miles easy + core work.  I woke up to snow, but I was able to run wearing my yaktrax. I ended up getting the day off work due to weather, so that was a great way to start the week!

ice

Tuesday: Strength training. I decided to stay indoors when I looked out the window and saw that my street was a sheet of ice! We ended up getting a 2 hour delay as the ice turned to rain and then it warmed up to 50 degrees, so all the ice melted.

Wednesday: 4.1 miles easy + core work. Back to a normal work schedule and it was a balmy 30 degrees! (With no wind, so it felt warm.)

sunrise

Thursday: 3.3 miles– this run was a struggle for some reason. I was just tired (maybe missing my morning cup of coffee) and it was cold again. However, this was the day that I saw the sunrise at the end of my run!

cold

Friday: 3 miles + 20 minutes yoga. I debated if I was going to run, but got dressed to work out and figured I might as well get outside and see how I felt. This was another really cold morning!

saturday run

Saturday: 7.1 miles + core work. I had to be ready by 8 to leave for a baby shower in NJ. I was planning to do 6 miles but got a little turned around and also felt good so ended up doing a little more. Even though it was only in the 30s, I could tell it was going to be a warmer day, and it reminded me a little of morning runs in the spring!

Sunday: Rest

Weekly Total: 21.5 miles

Push-ups: 4 days  Miles walked: 18.1

Yearly Total: 289.78/2016

I love that it’s getting lighter in the morning! It makes such a difference for me. Hoping to get out there this morning, I haven’t run much at all last few days after being sick. And my site is down this morning which is already making my day nutty! Ugh

I noticed that your site was down earlier and was wondering what was going on! Plus you didn’t post yesterday, so before I realized you were sick I figured it was annoying technical stuff. Glad you got it worked out, and I hope you had a good run this morning!

I’m always disappointed to change the clocks forward after having much lighter runs for a few weeks. Just another strange annoyance of being a runner! I’m also getting tired of changing weather and more cold/windy weather coming this way.

Agreed! I like the warmer temps but now it just feels like a tease.

Weather in melbourne aus is pretty warm this week – going to be a windy 30 degrees (100 farenheit) tomorrow then it should cool into a nice autumn which is my favourite season. Good running week for you! My first week of marathon training went well and I’m feeling good for week 2.

      February 22, 2016 at 8:09 pm

Wow, I can’t believe how warm it is there! And it’s very impressive that you are training in that heat!

I keep telling myself it’s going to get better soon. And it is. We’re getting glimmers of spring. Love seeing the sun earlier but I do love a later sunset too. Great week of pushing through crappy weather!

Just a few more weeks, right?:) It’s definitely nice to have some more sunlight in the evenings too. Longer days are always a good thing.

We’ve had the craziest weather this winter. Snow on Tuesday and 60 degrees on Saturday. Mother Nature is having issues, apparently. Now it’s supposed to snow again. Which is actually a good thing, because I’ve got Yak Trax to review…

I’m not sure what season it is here. I don’t think Chicago knows either!

I can’t keep up! We are supposed to get lots of rain this week so maybe that means its an early spring?

      February 22, 2016 at 8:11 pm

Well at least that is the silver lining! This winter has definitely been crazy.

I would say it is like late March here – mornings in the teens, afternoons above freezing. It has been a very mild winter here – and thankfully TimeHop keeps reminding me that last year I was only counting days below -10 (before wind) because EVERY morning was sub-zero! Whew – don’t miss that!

Definitely not a fan of the time change … it is antiquated and a general hassle. And my 12 year old dog seems to reject the very concept – 6 months of the year she can wait for 5pm for her dinner, but the other 6 months she gets antsy at 4pm! 😀

    • [email protected] says

      February 22, 2016 at 8:13 pm

I don’t miss the really cold temps from last year either! (although it wasn’t as cold here as it was for you.)
It takes me a while to adjust to the time change, I would much rather skip it all together!

Great job on your workout for the wk. It is always so much harder to get out there when it’s cold out. It was so beautiful here this wkend as well. I went outside for both my runs. And boy I am feeling it this morning, after not running at that pace for quite some time.

      February 22, 2016 at 8:14 pm

It’s felt like spring here, complete with frequent showers. Although the forecast shows no rain for the next couple weeks! I’m really ready for more light in the morning. The sun only is just starting to come up around 7 am!

    • [email protected] says

      February 22, 2016 at 8:14 pm

I think the rain came here instead this week! We are supposed to get rain through Thursday, and I’m not happy about it at all!

All of your pictures make me feel so cold! It’s incredible that you get up and out the door before the sun rises AND when it’s 30 degrees out. I want to give you some kind of award for this! 😀

I am so impressed with all of your walking! That must take a lot of time! What time of day do you walk and how many miles do you usually do a day?

    • [email protected] says

      February 22, 2016 at 8:16 pm

I don’t usually set aside extra time to walk, I just try to include it in my day when I can. I do try to go for a long walk on rest days, so that helps!

I realized recently that my mornings would be dark again once we hit the time change. I don’t mind running in the dark, but I like to see the sunrise. The birds have been chirping SO LOUD outside my office window for about 10 days now. Spring must be around the corner. Your walk miles are almost as much as you run miles. How do you fit that into your day? Thanks for linking with us Lisa!

      February 22, 2016 at 8:18 pm

I try to go for walks on days that I don’t run, and other than that I have just been trying to move more throughout the day. I also have a decent walk to and from my car at work, which adds up to about a mile a day.
I love when I start to hear the birds chirping and know the spring is close!

Its getting lighter in the morning here which I am loving! We had a beautiful day in the 50s this weekend and now its back to cold so it feels like winter here. At least a lot of the snow has melted!

I like it when it’s a little lighter in the morning, it’s tough running in pitch black! I do enjoy getting to enjoy watching the sunrise during a morning run. The weather over the weekend was so nice in D.C., it’s making me super excited for spring!

I like daylight savings because I get light early in the morning and into the evening in the summers. The longer evenings make it easier to stay up and I don’t want to hibernate as much.

We’ve had Springy weather, like Laura in Seattle. Lots of rain, but now it’s sunny today and supposed to stay that way for several days in a row. So happy! And I’m glad your weather has warmed up a bit over there. It’s so hard getting out there when it’s that cold. Nice job on your runs last week!

I was so excited to see hints of spring too! I don’t mind running in the dark of mornings (dark of evenings are completely different for me) so I’m happy when the clocks change. I’d much rather it stay lighter later. Have a great week!

I feel like a total wimp when I see you running in the snow! It doesn’t even snow here but in winter I am constantly complaining about the cold and avoid going outside as much as possible 😛

You are so on it with the core work — I’m noticing some aches and pains in my hips and back and am SURE it’s my weak core — so I need to take a page from your book! If you asked me yesterday I would say spring is coming, but now it’s 100% winter again. But that’s Chicago for ya! Things change in a second!

It sounds like you had a good week and are really on top of your core work. That’s awesome and it’s something I really need to get back into.

Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 mile MP/1 mile easy. I took a few hours of PTO in the morning to do this on the trail because I knew wouldn’t be able to do it this weekend. This was my first time on the trail since my marathon last November. It was nice to be back there and the perfect place to do this kind of long run. It was the kind of run where you start thinking “ok cool I just did a tough MP workout” but then you remember you actually need to run 26 miles in a row at that pace. Luckily there’s still 9 more weeks of training…although that doesn’t really sound like that much!
41 miles for the week and got in 2 strength sessions. Taking it easy this weekend other than chasing the kids around for all their activities! #run #marathontraining #longrun
It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It is a little frustrating to have to plan more time for an easy run. But it’s definitely worth it to recover quicker and feel better on workout days! #run #marathongtraining #easyrun
You know marathon training is starting to get real You know marathon training is starting to get real when you start losing track of what training week it is. I had to check my calendar but this was week 6, so 10 weeks to go!

I ran the Charles Street 12 last weekend so this week was all about easy miles and recovering from the race. That went well until I went and ran all the hills yesterday followed by walking around a maze and fun park for 5 hours. I got in some strength and mobility this morning and now I’m back to focusing on recovery!

If you’re training for a race how many weeks do you have left?

#run #runner #marathontraining #richmondmarathon
15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 9 15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 91% humidity 🫠 Pretty sure that was harder than my race last weekend, but got it done. Now off to my second workout of the day- taking the kids to an outdoor fun park. RIP to my legs.
What are you up to this weekend?
