Weekly Wrap: Humidity Everywhere

It seems like the theme this week has been that there is humidity everywhere. I started off the week in Florida where it was warm, humid, and rainy, and came back to Baltimore where it was pretty much the same! I’m sure part of the problem is that I’m not yet acclimated to this type of weather. It also seems like even after it rains we are not getting a break from the humidity. Hopefully this upcoming week will be a little better!

This week it seems like it has been humid everywhere. Read about my week of workouts including runs both in Florida and Maryland. #running #workouts

Still, it’s nice to be running in shorts and tank tops instead of layers. Even up until a few weeks ago I felt like I was still wearing long sleeves for runs and deciding if I should wear capris. Now it’s much easier to just throw on shorts and a tank and head out the door!

Weekly Workouts:

Monday: 3 miles
Tuesday: 4 miles
Wednesday Rest/Travel Day
Thursday: 25 minutes spin bike and 25  minutes yoga
Friday: 3 miles
Saturday: 5 miles
Sunday: Strength training

You may have seen on Instagram that I had a little water bottle issue during Saturday’s run. After bringing it back from Florida, I washed it out before filling it up for my run. Well, I must not have rinsed it enough because a mile into my run I went to take a sip and got a mouth full of soap! I tried dumping some out thinking maybe just the top was soapy, but nope. it was pretty much a bottle of soapy water.

soapy water

It was so warm out that the water didn’t stay very cold anyway. Next time I will be freezing some of the water before heading out (which is what I usually do, I just didn’t think of it this time). I will also be making sure I rinse the bottle really well!

I’ve definitely been struggling to run in this weather but it’s nice that I’m not training for anything and can run what I want. I’m just not quite ready for be doing long runs in this weather! Last summer I wasn’t running a whole lot because of my foot injury so it’s really been a long time since I was fully acclimated to summer running. Hopefully in another week or so it will start to feel a little easier!

The humidity was terrible last week! I thought every run would get slightly easier but nope they were all hard because of it. Hopefully us runners can adjust soon!

Exactly! It wasn’t until today that I finally felt some relief.

Even the cooler days have been humid! It’s just going to be a weird summer, weather-wise.

I’ve had the soapy bottle before! I also use a reusable bottle for work and I’ve had iced soapy tea! Blech!

Yuck! Drinking anything with soap in it just isn’t good.

Oh yikes. A mouth full of soapy water had to be a shock to the system. I feel like I never truly acclimate to heat. It always sucks the life out of me when I run. But running on shady trails, freezing water, etc. help me make the best of it. We got lucky with a wonderful cool-down but the heat is building back today.

It definitely cooled off here today but Im sure it won’t last for long!

I always say that the humidity takes more out of me than the heat. It always takes a while to get used to it, although I never think we can really get used to humidity!

      June 4, 2018 at 6:04 pm

Yes, same here! I’m not sure if it ever gets easier to run in humidity but eventually I think we sort of get used to it.

Yuck, soapy water bottle. I have never had that happen to me. After hearing that, I will make sure I am washing my bottle out very well.

Great job! We have had relentless humidity in Philly as well and just walking to the train to get to work has been annoying, running would be even more miserable! They say this is the weather that makes you stronger…

Be glad you had a sip of soap instead of mold/mildew – that’s what I stupidly did on one of my 20 mile runs – so gross!! LOL

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      June 4, 2018 at 6:05 pm

Oh no! That’s definitely worse than soapy water.

  8. Laura says

Ugh, yes, the humidity is gross and makes running so challenging! I’m hoping our bodies will adapt soon, although I find it challenging all summer long!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      June 4, 2018 at 6:05 pm

I agree that it will always be challenging. Hopefully we will get used to it as the summer goes on!

  9. Lesley says

    June 4, 2018 at 11:21 am

It’s hard to adapt when we’ve had so little time between winter and summer. I’m lucky that Colorado is dry, but there are days when I can feel a little humidity. Right now I’m walking to get outside, and it isn’t too bad.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      June 4, 2018 at 6:06 pm

It really was a quick jump from winter weather to summer weather!

  10. Laura @ This Runner's Recipes says

We had nice weather for most of May, but June is in full swing now which means humidity and a constant light drizzle. Blech to the soap! I’m nervous about that happening so I repeatedly rinse bottles after a wash them – the thought of the taste of soap is so gross to me.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      June 4, 2018 at 6:06 pm

I think I will always be extra diligent about rinsing out my bottles from now on!

  11. Samantha says

The humidity definitely smacked us in the face here!! I;m still not adjusted to the weather and humidity change yet for my runs, hopefully soon; it just needs to stay consistent…

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      June 4, 2018 at 6:07 pm

Hopefully we will get used to it soon! But the cooler days are a nice treat every once in awhile.

I was in Washington D.C. last week for a wedding and OMG, it was so humid. I don’t know how you live! I definitely appreciate the dry heat in California now, although summer running is no joke here either.

Eek, soapy water… that’s awful. I always make sure to rinse REALLY well.

      June 5, 2018 at 4:59 am

Summer’s here are really rough with the humidity! It hit us hard last week but now we finally have a little break. But honestly that’s what most of the summers are like.

  13. Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder says

    June 5, 2018 at 8:30 am

I’ve done the mouthful of soap thing before…it was disgusting. I don’t think we ever truly acclimate to heat and humidity in Florida…my Garmin has been saying my VO2 max has gone down due to running slower in this heat. I try not to let it bother me because I know that training over the summer is more effort based than time based, but it still bugs me to think that I’m losing fitness. Ick.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      June 5, 2018 at 7:14 pm

I bet you will be so much faster when the weather cools off! I couldn’t imagine training in the Florida heat.

  14. Jessica says

    June 6, 2018 at 6:56 pm

Oh, how devastating to get a mouthful of soapy water!! I think I would have to call it and head home at that point!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      June 7, 2018 at 4:56 am

Yea it was pretty gross! I definitely won’t make that mistake again.

  15. HoHo Runs says

    June 7, 2018 at 10:35 am

Ugh to the soapy water! I feel your humidity pain! Unfortunately, I never acclimate to the humidity and spend the entire spring, summer (ha – and fall) just getting through it with slower paces. It can definitely mess with your mind. Thanks for linking!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      June 7, 2018 at 6:03 pm

I don’t think I really acclimate either, but I do sort of get used to it so mentally maybe its a little easier. But my paces will be slower all summer as well!

Listened to Life of a Showgirl on the treadmill and had some podcasts saved for my outside run but couldn’t get my headphones to connect. This was challenging by the end and I kept thinking how hard it would be if I needed to run another 7 miles today (and all miles at a faster pace) but this is why we train. The long runs are getting longer, and I’m slowly feeling like my fitness is building. I can’t believe that by the time October is over I’ll be getting ready to taper for the marathon!
