Workouts, Thanksgiving, and a Cold

For pretty much the past week I have been fighting off an annoying cold. Last Sunday night my throat started to hurt, and was the worst for most of the day on Monday. (Just in time to give 3 presentations!) Since then it’s sort of lingered, never really becoming a full cold but just enough to make me more tired and make working out a little more difficult.

weekly workout recap

Luckily it was a short work week, but those three days were jam-packed. It was nice to have a long weekend to try to relax and recover. On Thursday we went to my parents’ to celebrate Thanksgiving and some of my family from NY came to visit.

Thanksgiving dinner

Sunday was spent decorating for Christmas! I really can’t believe it’s already that time of year. I finally made some headway with Christmas shopping too.

Holiday Decorations

Monday: 30 minutes spinning and PT exercises

I wanted to do a harder spinning workout but because I didn’t feel well I just ended up riding the bike at a relatively easy pace.

spinning

Tuesday: 3 mile run, Pure Barre Tone in 10 (abs and seat), 10 minutes yoga

I had a morning meeting and worked from home for the first hour of the day, so I had a little extra time to work out without my usual commute. Meredith reminded me that I still have this Pure Barre Tone in 10 subscription for a few more weeks so I figured I should take advantage of that!

3 miles

Wednesday: Strength training/PT exercises

Nothing special here, but I was sore for a couple days from this workout.

strength

Thursday: 6.1 miles, 20 minutes yoga

Thanksgiving run! I just did an easy out and back and then a yoga flow focusing on back and hips.

Thanksgiving run

Friday: 50 minutes Pilates

The Pilates video I did really explained how to do each move slowly which was helpful. I never really know if I am doing some of the exercises correctly!

Saturday: 5 miles plus PT exercises

I did a hilly run in my new shoes, and started to get a blister towards the end of the run. I like the shoes otherwise!

5 miles

Sunday: 30 minutes yoga for hips, hamstrings, and back; PT exercises

I finished up by practicing headstand a few times!

headstand

As you can see I did not keep up with my yoga streak from last week. Things were just too busy plus I was tired from not feeling well. I was glad that I managed to sneak in a few sessions here and there!

I think the seat and abs is my favorite one! I am glad you went back to it. I hope you start to feel better asap.

Thanks! The seat and abs is a good one- I will need to remember to try another this week.

I had the most amazing run on Thanksgiving. I was so spoiled by it. And how crazy is it that you got an actually have a “normal” Thanksgiving this year! On time!

Very true! Glad you had such a good run!

I need to follow your lead and start doing more non-running workouts. I do feel slightly off. Not a full-blown cold but the stress of the holiday, in-laws, the race, injury etc have all taken a toll.

      November 28, 2016 at 7:22 pm

You have alot going on! Non-running workouts would definitely be good, especially as your hamstring is healing.

sorry you aren’t feeling well, I have been lucky so far this year with the colds. My back however has not been behaving and I am just getting back into the swing of things after three weeks. I ran on Thanksgiving but didn’t do a race like I had planned.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 28, 2016 at 7:23 pm

That was probably smart to skip the race! Hopefully your back is 100% soon!

Colds are the worst this time of year – it makes it even harder to get outside in the chilly weather. That slow pilates class sounds great and your Thanksgiving sounded lovely!

Last Monday I knew I wouldnt run outside in the cold because of how I felt! Luckily running has felt ok lately, now that its mostly just a stuffy nose.

My allergies have been totally out of control for the last couple of weeks, but luckily no cold (although they often feel like the same thing, ugh). I hope a couple of extra days off work has you feeling a little better!

Sorry to hear about your allergies- those can be so annoying too!

I am sorry to hear that you aren’t feeling well! I ran on Thanksgiving, although we kept it short because of my marathon taper. I like medium distance runs on Thanksgiving.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 28, 2016 at 7:25 pm

Medium distances on Thanksgiving are pretty great-enough to feel like you got in a good workout but not too much that you are wiped out for the rest of the day!

I actually had a sore throat by the end of Thanksgiving, but thankfully it went away by morning. I didn’t want to have to get out the cough drops again because I just went through that.

Your house looks beautiful with all the Christmas decorations!

How do you do headstands without your head hurting? Is it just something you have to work up to? I used to do them as a kid, but now my head hurts so bad I can’t even get my legs up!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 28, 2016 at 7:27 pm

The first time I learned to do a headstand was at a studio with an instructor, and she taught me how to place my head on the ground properly. I forget how she explained to do it but now I just know what it should feel like!

Coming to you via the Weekly Wrap. I found it really hard to hit the miles over the past week as I was getting over a cold. Some days I hit the paces I wanted and other days I blew it. I probably should have just taken time off but I hate doing that in peak marathon training. So jealous that you are decorated for Christmas! Hope you feel better!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 28, 2016 at 7:30 pm

Thanks! Its tough to back off during those peak weeks, even if you’re not feeling 100%. Hope you feel better and that this week is better for you!

I just can’t believe how straight up and down your body is in that headstand! I’m so impressed.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 28, 2016 at 7:31 pm

I am also kind of surprised. I guess you have to be straight in order to balance there!

Love the decorations! We just got our tree up on Saturday too… I love this time of year! Awesome job keeping all the cross training and strength in the mix.
And funny you mention blisters… that has never happened to me before until this week with a new pair of shoes!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 28, 2016 at 7:32 pm

So frustrating about the blisters! I wore a different pair today and it felt fine, but I know when I put on those shoes again I’ll feel it. It’s been so long since I have gotten a blister from running that I’m not even sure what to do!

I hope you feel better. A very sore throat is the worst thing to me. You try not to swallow — and end up swallowing even more. I did run on Thanksgiving. It helped alleviate the guilt that was coming later that day. 😉 Anyone who says “blister”, I say “Trail Toes”. It’s the best stuff ever made! Thanks for linking, Lisa!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 28, 2016 at 7:33 pm

I’m so glad the sore throat is gone! I do think that was the worst part of this cold. I will need to look into Trail Toes!

Your head stand is awesome!! Thanksgiving really snuck up on me…and now that it’s passed, YIKES! The trees are both up (and lit!) but the other decorations are sitting in scattered boxes….

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 28, 2016 at 7:33 pm

Thanks! I cant believe Thanksgiving is over either. Good luck with getting the rest of the decorating done!

Girl, I get blisters sometimes in old shoes! So if a new pair gives me blisters, I will give them several tries before I toss them. I enjoy your variety of workouts as that is what I enjoy doing as well…I do get bored with the same thing. I have a spin bike at home as well, and love being able to jump on it for an easy recovery ride or a quick intense calorie burn! Have a great week!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 29, 2016 at 7:43 pm

It’s nice to have several different ways to work out! I think Im gonna give the new shoes another couple tries to see if the blister persists.

19 miles! 7 on the treadmill, 12 outside, 1,272 to 19 miles! 7 on the treadmill, 12 outside, 1,272 total feet of elevation gain. Amazing weather. Listened to Life of a Showgirl on the treadmill and had some podcasts saved for my outside run but couldn’t get my headphones to connect. This was challenging by the end and I kept thinking how hard it would be if I needed to run another 7 miles today (and all miles at a faster pace) but this is why we train.
