Last Week’s Workouts plus Headphones, Meal Prep, and Starting Over

I don’t have as much running-wise to talk about this week, so this post may be a little all-over-the-place. However, looking back on the week it’s not like I did nothing. I just felt like it was so much less than usual that I questioned if I would even have anything to write about.

Who else would like a do-over for the start of 2018? In today's post I'm sharing my workouts from last week, as well as a headphone update and meal prep from the weekend. #workouts #mealprep #running

Starting over

Does anyone else feel like they just want to ignore January and start 2018 over this month? Maybe not ignore it, but I know many of us were happy to say goodby to the long, cold month. February has to be better, right? I feel like it’s a new month and a new chance to start over with this year. January was just a practice month.

January is a free trial month

Wireless Headphones

Before the holidays I was trying to decide if I wanted wireless headphones and if so, which ones I wanted to ask for for Christmas. I ended up getting the AfterShockz Trekz Titanium Headphones (affiliate link) but they were too big. They do make smaller ones, but my parents had bought them for me on Amazon, and they didn’t have any of the smaller size. So I returned them and am now trying to decide what to do.

I really don’t listen to anything when I run anyway. Maybe once every 6 weeks. My treadmill has bluetooth speakers so I can play music from my phone when I run on there. So do I really need a fancy pair of headphones? Probably not. The only problem is I got the iPhone 7 last summer which doesn’t have a port for headphones (they give you an adapter that basically lets you plug the headphones into the charging port). So when I use my wired headphones I need that adapter.

A few weeks ago I almost put my cheap headphones with the adapter in the wash. At the last minute I pulled them out and must have stuck them in the pocket of the hoodie I was wearing. For weeks I could not find them. Finally I put that hoodie back on and there they were. (This story may prove even more why I shouldn’t have expensive headphones).

Anyway, let’s take a look at the workouts I got in last week. If you recall when I posted last Monday I felt like I was getting sick so I had taken the weekend off from running. I got the worst of it on Tuesday night/Wednesday and finally started to feel like myself again on Saturday.

Last week’s workouts

Monday: 30 minute walk
Tuesday: 30 minute walk
Wednesday: Rest
Thursday: Rest
Friday: Rest
Saturday: 3 mile run
Sunday: 6 mile run

I hope that being sick so much this year has helped me to build up an immunity to everything going around. Everyone I work with has been sick recently, with all different things. I decided this weekend to spend lots of time meal prepping to make sure I get in plenty of healthy foods this week. I usually eat pretty well, but some weeks there is more pizza and tacos and less salads and vegetables.

Meal prep can be a lot of work and very time consuming, but if you don’t have much time to cook during the week (or know you won’t have the energy to cook) it’s well worth it. I spent almost 3 hours this weekend meal prepping. This is what I made:

-cut up veggies
-roasted sweet potatoes
-made homemade fajita seasoning
-cooked a spaghetti squash
-made these meatballs
-cooked up stuffed peppers (my own variation, with carrots, spinach, onion and peppers)
-baked paleo chocolate chip cookies
-made an egg frittata
-grilled chicken and veggies for lunches (Rob did this part)

Well that was certainly all over the place compared to what I usually share for my weekly recaps. Hopefully this week will be back to normal!

Do you have wireless headphones? What kind?
Do you meal prep for the week?
Who else feels like they would like a do-over for the start of 2018?

I’m glad you are on the mend! There has been so much sickness this year so far. I have no wireless headphone advice. I had some really good ones that lasted a year before they died. I bought a replacement pair and they died in less than 2 months. Grrrrrr!

Thats why I’m nervous to invest in any good ones! I think I should just keep buying cheap headphones until I find ones I really want.

I do love my TrekzTitanium but yes, the band that goes around my head does not fit snuggly. I did read that they have a newer, smaller model now so maybe you want to check that out?

    Have a good week!

I was thinking about trying the smaller ones but now I’m having a hard time finding them!

I have the Samsung IconX wireless ones and so far they are pretty good. I did a lot of research and I heard these are much smaller than most of the buds out there. So far so good, but I will say I have wore a head warmer every time outside with these and feel like that helps keep them in place. I don’t know they will be when I start wearing them without one.

Thats a good point that the headband may help them stay in. I guess I’ll wait until I can find ones I really want.

Awesome job on your meal prepping! I hope that I can get to a point where meal prepping is second nature to me. Like you said, it can be so time consuming but it does pay off.

I usually do at least some prep each weekend, but I used to do so much more all the time. Its all about finding a good balance where it helps you through the week but doesn’t take away from the weekend.

Great work meal prepping! I need to get better about meal prepping for the weekends – I like to have something quick to eat for lunches those days, and good homemade snacks if possible. I think the smaller size of AfterShokz would be a good option! The normal ones fit me but I also wear a medium in helmets and such. The quality is just so much better than any other wireless headphones I’ve tried.

I thought about getting the mini ones around the holidays but they weren’t on Amazon, now I don’t see them on the website either. I’ll probably think about it and then if I see they are available again maybe consider giving them a try.

I did more meal prep than usual this weekend since I”m bringing salads in for lunch this week. I had to cook the chicken yesterday, and I roasted the pecans. Everything is separated so nothing gets soggy in my lunch bag.

Its nice to have good foods ready to go for lunches during the week. Sometimes its alot of work but pays off.

I want to redo January so I can go back to Las Vegas! lol. I dont have the wireless headphones – I still use my apple headphones every day because I hate spending money on running stuff, as funny as it sounds. I find the cheap pairs to be fine, and when they break, I just get a new pair.

I’ve been using the cheap Phillips headphones for years and they work well enough. The most annoying part is they cant plug directly into the newer iPhones.

yes, let’s move on to February! I am so with you on losing my headphones… clearly I can’t have nice things.

and I’m inspired by all your meal prep- awesome work!

Yes yes yes I need a 2018 redo! Feb 1st is definitely my new Jan. haha. I also like to meal prep. I really hate cooking when I’m super hungry and end up getting takeaway or just snacking so prepping has something ready and no excuses.

Meal prep is so helpful! I just don’t have the time or patience to cook from scratch during the week.

My first pair of wireless were the Trekz, but they’re definitely too big in cold weather when I wear a headband they slip. Go figure. Now I wear some from Plantronics, which I like. Gosh those bugs are rampant everywhere, I swear. Glad you’re feeling better!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      February 5, 2018 at 5:03 pm

I don’t think I’ve looked into Plantronics headphones. Its too bad the Aftershokz are so big!

No wireless headphones for me…I’m old school with the ear buds. I have never done much for meal prepping, even when the kids were little. Now, my meal prep consists of making big meals and eating leftovers for several days (because no one else will eat them).

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      February 5, 2018 at 5:05 pm

I like eating leftovers too..especially for lunches.

I was reluctant to get bluetooth earbuds, but now I have Jaybirds and I love them.

I do not meal prep for the week, but I meal PLAN and prepare breakfasts and lunches the night before.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      February 5, 2018 at 5:06 pm

Meal planning is so important too! I don’t know how anyone can just decide what they want to eat day by day..it makes it so much easier to plan and grocery shop!

I was going to ask for wireless headphones for Christmas and completely forgot! So now, I’m trying to remember to do so for the next occasion. I have a tiny pea head so thanks for the heads up on the After Shockz sizing. I know meal prep is a great idea, but I don’t because of the time involved. I have our evening meals down to 15-20 minutes prep and save my fancier/more involved meals for the weekend. Here’s to a bright new month!

      February 6, 2018 at 5:24 am

I like to prep for about 2 dinners throughout the week and then my other weeknight dinners are meals that are faster to make. Its tough to find headphones that fit well, especially for running!

Great job with your meal prepping! I need to start doing that. I love Aftershokz headphones! I like the new Air ones since they’re lighter and I think they fit better.

I will need to look into the air ones! Thanks for the recommendation!

I actually had quite a productive January but I’ve been super sick the first week in February and feel like I’ve gotten nothing done! I’d like a do over on this week. I’m so behind on everything and have barely run which makes me feel like crap, so if this could just end, I’d be super happy about it.

It seems like everyone has been sick this year! I hope you are feeling better and can get back on track.

Yesterday’s long run was followed immediately by Yesterday’s long run was followed immediately by back to back kid activities, so there was no time to post about it. (I ate breakfast in the car and lunch at soccer practice- it was that kind of a day.) I was kind of nervous going in to this run, especially now that I’m getting down to last few key long runs. I had 16 miles with 4 x 2 miles on the plan, which sounded manageable but also challenging. The weather was perfect and I hit all my paces. At the end I got a little confused- thinking I was at 15 miles but I was actually at 14 🙃 Got home and realized I chafed really bad. Another long run down, and another week closer to race day.
