So Much Sweat

This was the week of so much sweat. Maybe they’ve all been that way lately, but I noticed it more this week. Do you ever wonder if you put your sweaty clothes in the wash if you are basically washing your other clothes in sweat? That was one of my questions after Saturday’s run. I’ll try not to think about it and assume that the water and detergent washes everything out.

Another humid week of running meant that there was SO much sweat! Click post to read about my workouts this weekend which included strength training, a long run, and a farltlek run! #workouts #running

Other than the relentless humidity, it was another good week of workouts. I got my next phase of strength training mid-week, so I will start that next week. Instead, I repeated week 6 of my last round of workouts. It was a busy and stressful week which meant I actually did more running. Even though it may sound counterproductive, it really helps! (At least for me.) I had a 2 day mini-conference that I helped to facilitate at work, I’m preparing for a 2 day training next week, we had a consultant come to our house to help pick out paint colors, and we visited our first daycare. Those extra things really add up and wear me out! Especially when I don’t sleep well, which is about 4 nights a week lately.

Anyway, here’s what the workouts looked like last week:

Monday: 5 miles with hills and mobility

This was the start of another humid week of running. And it’s so dark out when I start my runs now. Boo.

hilly run

Tuesday: 4 miles and Strength training

I did an out and back and was initially planing to run 3-3.5 miles total. When I got to the halfway point I was on a downhill and kept going. Only problem was when I turned around I had to run uphill!

sunrise run

Wednesday: 6 miles with 8 x 2 minutes hard

I wanted to get in another mini-fartlek workout because this really helps me from getting bored with running the same pace all the time. It actually evens out to be close to the same average pace as most of my other runs, because the recovery portions are so slow (and the hard parts are not at a very speedy pace!) This felt good but was tough at the end when the sun was out.

fartlek run

Thursday: 2.5 miles and Strength training

I completed my strength training and then ran on the treadmill. Good thing I didn’t have a set amount of miles in mind because my treadmill decided to do an update which took about 5 minutes. It was hard getting into the groove when I knew I didn’t have much time to run anyway.

treadmill run

Friday: 3.5 miles and Yoga

I probably should have taken a day off of running to rest before my longer run but I mentally needed a run. Some post-run yoga helped to stretch out my legs a bit.

friday run

Saturday: 9 miles

With possible rain in the forecast both days this weekend I wasn’t sure when I would run. When I woke up on Saturday the forecast said it would just be cloudy most of the morning. I got all ready to run outside and then it looked like it was about to storm. I really didn’t feel like running on the treadmill so I ran outside but stayed close to home. It rained for the first 5 miles, but there was no thunder or lightning. I was a little disappointed that I ran the same routes I run during the week (repeating some portions several times to get some miles in) but it was comforting to know I was close to home in case the weather changed.

saturday 9 miles

The rain felt good but it was still so humid the whole time I was out there. I was drenched when I got home and took a shower within 2 minutes of walking in the door.

Sunday: Rest

A rest day from working out but tried to get through a bunch of things on my to-do list!

Hit 30 miles for the week!

While I really do love summer running, this time of year is always a struggle for me. The mornings are dark again, the humidity is never-ending, and I am torn between being ready for fall weather and wanting summer to last a little longer. I just try to remind myself how much I look forward to this all winter!

Nice job on the mileage! I had the same thought about washing sweaty clothes this week too. I don’t know the exact science but there has to be clean water involved somehow. Haha! We’ve had so many thunderstorms this summer. Usually it’s drought season but not this year. Unless it’s lightening, I’m still outside!

I think we have had a thunderstorm every day for a few weeks now! It’s even been thundering when it’s sunny out somehow.

You killed it last week! I do an Oxy pre-soak for my workout stuff. I swear it helps them never get that perma-stink. I too am bummed about the growing darkness. Makes it even harder to get up.

      August 13, 2018 at 5:32 pm

That’s a great idea to pre-soak! I usually just throw my clothes in the wash and start a load right after my Saturday long run.

I’m only running 3 days per week, so I can move my runs around based on the weather. The humidity has been relentless but we’ve had cooler mornings and that makes it more tolerable! I wash my running clothes separately from the regular laundry. I hope that the sweat comes out!

I have to say, you don’t look pregnant yet! You look amazing and your fitness level is just great.

That’s probably a good idea to wash workout clothes separately. Although I feel like 99% of my clothes are workout clothes!
And thanks! I definitely feel like I look (at least a little) pregnant but probably not in any of the pictures I’ve shared. It’s also more obvious at the end of the day.

Yes “relentless humidity” it a great way to describe last week! You still did a great job at getting so many workouts in, despite the crazy weather! Awesome job on your 30 miles this week!

You are blowing me away with all these runs! Sometimes I forget that you re expecting 😉 Being outside in bad weather makes me nervous too.

Haha sometimes I forget too, except that my paces are so much slower these days!

Thanks! And I think I will just try not to think too much about the sweaty laundry:)

    Gorgeous sunrise!
And I love your pink socks.
Washing in sweat is one reason I pre rinse my workout clothes. That and I send my laundry out bi-weekly so I don’t want it fermenting that long. As a result, my shower looks like a laundromat.
For me it depends with the rain. If it’s a paid for race and or I have no time later, I’ll go. If I have time flexibility I’ll roll over and go back to bed as I did Saturday

I should really start rinsing my clothes, especially if I know I won’t do laundry for a few days. Usually I just hang them around the bathroom to dry.

Great week of workouts! I never run in thunderstorms – it’s one of the few conditions that keep me indoors, but it’s not worth the risk. I’m definitely ready for fall running!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      August 13, 2018 at 5:38 pm

It’s been tough lately to avoid the thunderstorms because it seems like they happen all the time! The forecast seems to always have a chance of storms, so I’m constantly stalking the weather to see if they will happen when I’m planning to run.

Wow, impressive mileage! I love that you’re still throwing in some fartleks, too. It’s nice to have that variety in training. And you’re right, all the baby prep stuff is exhausting!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      August 13, 2018 at 5:39 pm

It just seems like there is so much to do, even though there’s still plenty of time before the baby comes!

The forecast has been killing my long runs recently! Staying close to home for a long run is nice in case you need to get home asap but mentally it’s draining.

I’m still enjoying summer running but if the humidity wanted to decrease I wouldn’t be opposed to it

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      August 14, 2018 at 5:53 pm

Totally agree about the humidity! It seems worse than most years I remember.

  13. San says

    August 14, 2018 at 12:43 pm

We don’t nearly have the humidity that you’re dealing with, but I am usually soaked in sweat as well (especially when I work out at the gym) and I wonder if you have to prewash your sweaty clothes before you put it with other stuff? Ha.

You got some great runs in this week. 30 miles is impressive!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      August 14, 2018 at 6:00 pm

I probably should prewash my clothes! Or I should at least wash them separately from everything else.

Nice mileage this week! It’s been so long since I’ve been pregnant, but I can definitely remember being stressed about getting thing ready. I hope you find the perfect daycare. My clothes mildew (or mold?) if I don’t hang them up for the sweat to dry. Then I collect all the dry, dirty running clothes hanging around and wash them. Thanks for linking!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      August 14, 2018 at 6:02 pm

I hang up my sweaty clothes during the week too! Especially when they’re soaked and it’s too gross to even think about throwing them in the laundry basket like that.

Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was followed immediately by Yesterday’s long run was followed immediately by back to back kid activities, so there was no time to post about it. (I ate breakfast in the car and lunch at soccer practice- it was that kind of a day.) I was kind of nervous going in to this run, especially now that I’m getting down to last few key long runs. I had 16 miles with 4 x 2 miles on the plan, which sounded manageable but also challenging. The weather was perfect and I hit all my paces. At the end I got a little confused- thinking I was at 15 miles but I was actually at 14 🙃 Got home and realized I chafed really bad. Another long run down, and another week closer to race day.

Do you ever psych yourself out before long runs?
