Updates on Life with a 2.5 Month Old

Well, once again it’s been a while. This time even longer than before. For a long time I had no desire to write a blog post. It’s been nice to stay connected with a lot of other bloggers through Instagram and blogging just seemed like too much work. Who has time to open a laptop when you can stay connected on your smart phone?

Gradually the itch started to come back. And I started taking some notes on my phone of topics I wanted to write about. As I started to get a little more of a grasp on motherhood I felt like I might be able to get back to blogging every now and then. (Until I go back to work and have no time at all!)

I thought I would just start out with an update on what’s been going on around here lately. Time is flying, that’s for sure. I am loving every day with Grayson. Some days are better than others but that’s to be expected. When we have a rough day, I go into the next day with the mindset of “How can I make it better”? We are constantly learning more about each other. I try to do as much reading as I can about each stage of development and then once I get a grasp on it, things change. Life with an infant is complicated!

Sleeping

All in all things have gone really well. Grayson is such a good baby. I get more sleep than I would have expected although I still really rely on a nice midday nap. Do you think work will understand that I might still need a nap when I am back? I can’t imagine magically being able to make it through the day in a few weeks.

cuddles

Over the past week we started to get into a nice routine. Not a schedule, but some sort of predictability is finally there where I sort of know when he will need to eat and sleep. We get lots of play time in between which is my favorite. He still hates tummy time and I think it’s because he likes to lay on his back and dance.

He’s an early riser and very active baby. Most nights he sleeps from around 7/7:30-4:30. I try to treat the 4am wake up like a nighttime wake up but he can’t be fooled. He must remember all our early morning runs from when I was pregnant. I can usually get him down for his first nap of the nap by 6ish but that still means I am up at 4 almost every day.

Challenges

We’ve had a few challenges with feeding and reflux that we are working through. I met with a lactation consultant about a month ago because he was gaining weight slightly slower than we would have liked. After a few weeks of working on some exercises we decided (along with his pediatrician) that his tongue tie was significant enough to possibly be causing some of these issues. We saw a specialist last week and had it fixed (using a laser, so it was quick and painless- so they tell me- and barely any bleeding). The process was more traumatic for mom and dad I think because they had to make him cry in order to get his mouth opened wide enough. I’m glad that’s over and I really hope we start to see some improvements now.

Hibernation

The weather here has been gross almost every day this winter (with a few 70 degree days thrown in there??) so we have been locked up in the house for 3 months. Honestly, I don’t mind it at all! Some days I wish we could get out for a walk but it’s been kind of nice to know we don’t have to go anywhere or do anything. Just our trips to the pediatrician are such a production. We’ve taken him to church a bunch of times so at least we have gotten some practice taking him out places, but it’s so much work.

Fitness

You may have seen that I started running again. I’ve just done what I can, when I can. The treadmill is hit or miss (either I hop on there during a nap and cross my fingers he doesn’t wake up, or bring him down with me to play while I run) and it’s not my favorite anyway. So I’ve tried to get outside on the weekends when Rob is home or on days when my mom comes over to hang out. Then most days I do a little core work or strength training during nap time.

running

The days sure do fill up and I’m not really sure where they go! I probably spend about 50% of the time doing laundry, changing diapers, and dealing with spit up. But I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Hopefully I’ll be back again soon, but if not make sure to follow me on Instagram!

What’s been going on with you lately?
Have you been hibernating this winter or do you have cabin fever?

Hopefully the tongue tie issue will help Grayson with eating. That’s awesome he sleeps through the night, even if he does wake up at 4/4:30 every day.

Alex and I were just talking yesterday how the winter feels like hibernation and we don’t even have a baby to worry about. Fingers crossed warm weather comes to both of us soon!

It really does feel like hibernation! I guess it wasn’t as bad in past years because I was running outside more. Hopefully spring is right around the corner now!

That’s great that you’ve been able to start running again!
I don’t do well hibernating in winter and get out often. It’s usually only on the very worst days that are below zero or blizzarding that I don’t take the dogs on a walk. We were stuck inside for two or three days with the polar vortex a few weeks ago and had to leave the house by the third day – I get cabin fever easily.

I don’t think I realize how much I need to get out of the house until I actually do. After being inside for weeks the days when we get out feel really good.

He is so sweet and smiley! How great he’s been a good baby. My oldest was born 2 weeks early and had nasty reflux. I swear she slept upright for 6 weeks. I can imagine how that tongue tie laser was traumatic for you guys! Glad it’s done. You’re doing great. Those phases fly!

The reflux is so tough. He is on meds for it now which seems to be helping. It’s crazy how fast the past few months have gone already!

Thank you! It’s been a process but we are getting there.

he is so, so sweet Lisa. I’ve never had children so I don’t know exactly how it is but I can only imagine it is tough learning the ropes with a newborn! And yes they do change quite quickly! Even when they get a little bit older. Time seems to go so fast. I met my stepkids when they were 3 and 6 – they are now 18 and 21! Cherish this time with your boy, learn as much as you can and take every day as it comes! Hopefully going back to work won’t wreck your nap schedule too much 😉

it’s great you’ve started running again too! yay!

Listened to Life of a Showgirl on the treadmill and had some podcasts saved for my outside run but couldn’t get my headphones to connect. This was challenging by the end and I kept thinking how hard it would be if I needed to run another 7 miles today (and all miles at a faster pace) but this is why we train. The long runs are getting longer, and I’m slowly feeling like my fitness is building. I can’t believe that by the time October is over I’ll be getting ready to taper for the marathon! Let’s hope October brings lots of good miles and maybe some cooler weather. Was September a good month of running for you? #september #marathontraining #running
