November Goals, DST, and Easing Back Into My Workouts

Just like that, it’s already November. As usual I am wondering where the time has gone. This week I was able to ease back into my workouts after being sick last week, and I also started working on some November goals. Of course this weekend was the end of daylight saving time, which sure does get interesting with a baby!

In November I plan to focus on running less and doing more mobility work and core training. I started out the month with some runs while also adjusting to the end of DST!

By Monday of last week I was feeling better so I started off the week with some strength training just to make sure I felt ok. Then on Tuesday I got in a short run which also felt good. I still have a bit of a cough that is lingering but otherwise I seem to be recovered from whatever I had.

Thursday was Halloween! We were supposed to get rain all day but it cleared up in the afternoon for trick-or-treating. We sat outside and gave out candy while Grayson wore his costume.

Halloween

I ran on the treadmill on both Thursday and Friday due to the weather. I have a feeling I will be on there a lot more in the coming months, so I am also trying to get outside when I can. Sunday’s run in the cool, fall weather was perfect! I also got to run when it was light out which was a bonus.

While I usually love DST in the fall, this year was a little different. Most days Grayson is up by 6am (sometimes earlier) and with the time change he was up at 4:30. I am always up by that time anyway, but I need time before he gets up to drink some coffee and get some things done! So we will be working on adjusting his schedule over the next few days. I’m sure he will figure it out.

Weekly Run Down

Monday: Strength training
Tuesday: 3 miles
Wednesday: Strength training
Thursday: 5 miles
Friday: 3 miles
Saturday: Rest
Sunday: 4 miles

My November goals are basically to just make time for mobility and core work and to cut back a bit on the miles. I am hoping if I run less then I won’t have an excuse for skipping the other stuff. Lately I feel like I have just enough time to run and that’s it. I think now is a good time to get back to that stuff before I start training for anything.

tuesday run

One other thing- every time there is a big race this year it leaves me wanting to run that race! First it was Chicago, and now it’s NYC. Hopefully I will get to do both at some point!

DST is a weird thing to adjust to! I’ve been awake both mornings by 5ish (which would be 6:00, right?)…my body just does not want to “sleep in.” Grayson’s costume is cute! It looks like you have matching head gear(?)

Haha yes they had a headpiece that was dinosaur ears at Target. I figured I would try to get into it a little bit this year:)

It’s hard to lose that pocket of time before kids get up! I found myself dozing in front of the TV last night then up too early this morning. We’ll all get on the program. I toy with running the Paris Marathon or Patagonia but honestly my I’ve done all (and more) races than I ever dreamed of. I do highly recommend both Chi and NYCM though!

It would definitely be cool to do one in another country! I hope I have it in me to run at least a few more marathons because there are a several that sounds great!

I do remember it taking a few days for the kids to get used to the time change. I love waking up to the sun instead of dark. Glad you are feeling better. Have a great week

It’s definitely nice to have more light in the mornings! Although its weird that its do dark early in the evenings now.

So glad that you are feeling better now.

I love your photo from Halloween – Grayson’s costume was so cute!

DST didn’t really affect me this year at all. Maybe it will hit me later on in the week? I do appreciate that it’s not dark on my drive to work in the morning now, but hate that it gets dark at 5:30pm now.

That’s great that DST didn’t affect you this year! I do think falling back is easier than springing ahead.

I don’t have any race goals for November except to heal and be able to run one! November is usually when I stay indoors a bit more, but I want to try to suck it up and get outside more this month.

I hope your ankle heals quickly so you can get back to running! I also try to get outside a bit more this time of year, especially on the warmer days.

I woke up way too early today, altho the time change played in my favor yesterday when I had to get up at 4:30 for my race! I like that it’s lighter in the morning too. It’s just a tough time of year all around.

I highly recommend Chicago for a marathon–it’s flat and the spectators are some of the best!

Chicago sounds so great! I was really leaning towards entering for next year but Rob talked me out of it lol. (Because we might not both get in and he would rather go somewhere that we could combine it with a vacation to visit family). Maybe next year!

It’s so crazy to think that it’s already November. I feel you on the treadmill runs (which I will do most of the time in the early mornings, but I will try to keep one outdoor run on the weekends. Fall weather is usually great for running!)

Yes I love running outside this time of year, especially when its nice out! Although the treadmill is a great option to have for the really cold weather.

DST with toddlers and preschoolers is even odder. I remember those days feeling like the longest days on Earth!! 🙂 Grayson looks adorable in his costume. I’ve got the FOMO for Chicago and NYC too now. If you happened to have watched it live streamed, they kept playing a commercial for New Balance shoes. I want those now too. haha!!

Ugh I would imagine for little kids DST is really tough. At least we were still able to get him to nap for awhile yesterday!
Haha I didn’t watch it live streamed- it sounds like they did a good job with their advertising!

The dogs don’t understand time changes either. I get wanting your quiet time before Grayson gets up! That photo of the two of you on Halloween is so cute!

It’s so hard to get in everything. I can only imagine how much harder it must be with a baby.

I still think about doing a marathon someday — I think NYC would be so exciting, but overwhelming for my husband — I also think it would be really tough!

Totally agree about NYC being exciting but overwhelming! I think it would be great to do one day but not right now.

Grayson’s halloween outfit.. <3 could he get more adorable?!?

I think it's hard anyway when you have less time for yourself to work on everything, but mobility and core are going to really help you in the end. Of course you being a coach know this already!

I have goals for this month, yes, mostly getting things back on track and having a schedule. Because I can't run at the moment I need (for my sanity) to find other things that bring me joy. That's the hard part. I'll get there.

Yes I definitely want to run big races and have run some pretty big ones already! But I will run Chicago next year and in fact I would love to run the 6 majors I just don't know how I'll do it yet. So far I only have one of my six stars (Berlin – and I'd do that one again too). I go for the lottery every year for London and Tokyo… New York I'll start the lottery process for 2021 🙂

That’s so awesome that you are trying to do the 6 majors! All of those races sound amazing!

My goals for November is to increase my mileage and train for my race in SC. I got excited about the NYC Marathon and entered the early drawing. I did not get selected but I was entered in the general lottery and should find out in February. If that doesn’t work out then I am going to enter the Marine Corps Marathon.

      November 6, 2019 at 7:01 pm

That’s a great plan! Hopefully you get into the general lottery for NYC, but Marine Corps would be fun too!

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
