The Double Digits of Quarantine

I am finding it hard to believe that we have made it to the double digits of quarantine. 10 weeks of working from home and not seeing anyone other than my immediate family. While it feels like forever, it also seems to have gone by quickly. It kind of reminds me of mile 10 in a marathon. You feel like you’ve been running for a long time, even though it went by quickly, but still have a long way to go.

We have hit the double digits of quarantine. 10 weeks of staying home and not seeing anyone. At least we have running to get us through this! #running #stayathome

Our weather wasn’t great for most of the week, but luckily it warmed up just in time for the weekend. Monday-Friday really didn’t feel like May. It was cloudy, windy, and cool. Then the heat and humidity came on full force, as it usually does. Due to some rain I was on the treadmill twice this week. I also got in a stroller run, a workout, and a long run.

Weekly Run Down

Wednesday: Rest day

Sunday: 9 Miles

Treadmill Running

It was weird being back on the treadmill. It’s probably been at least a month since I’ve run on there. I didn’t love it, but it wasn’t too bad. I kind of like that I can keep the incline flat and give myself a break from running hills.

Speed Work

After finding out my half-marathon was cancelled back in March, I haven’t done any speedwork. Instead I have done a few virtual races. This week I decided to do a workout at 10k pace. My virtual 10k pace was 7:29, so I aimed for around there. Some of my splits were slower, but most were faster. I would have liked my splits to be more even but oh well. It was kind of windy so I’ll blame it on that.

Long Run

My longest run of the week was on Sunday and I did 9 miles. The forecast said 59 degrees and cloudy, but when I stepped out it was lightly raining. It was also humid so the rain felt good, except for when I was running into the wind. Overall this was a pretty good run. I love having so much light on my runs even when I start them early. I ventured a little farther from home once again which was nice. I guess I sometimes need a reminder that there is still a world out there besides my immediate neighborhood.

Sunday run double digits of quarantine

I wonder if at some point we will stop counting the weeks since this all started. After all, it’s supposedly our “new normal”.

Are things starting to open up where you live?
Does it feel like May yet for you?
If you run on a treadmill, do you use an incline or keep it mostly flat?

Oh no, the dreaded treadmill! At least you had some nice runs outside this week, your neighbourhood looks really nice. Well done with throwing in some speedwork!
Things are opening up here and the numbers are still very low. Last Saturday I did my first run with friends (we’re allowed to be in groups of 5) and it felt weird and wonderful at the same time.
Hopefully, it will continue going well.

That’s so great that you are able to run with friends again and that your numbers have stayed low! I hope that we can follow your lead but it just seems its going to take alot longer here.

In spite of all the bad that has come out of the pandemic, there have been a lot of good things. Particularly how we’ve all learned to make do and to do things a new way. This may sound trivial, but my hair color/cut was rescheduled to June 18, which will make it 14 weeks since my last appointment. Pre-pandemic, I would never have imagined going 6 weeks between colors–I’ve learned how to make it work. But don’t get me wrong, I’m looking forward to getting in the salon, lol!

I know what you mean! I actually gave Rob a hair cut today for the first time ever. He bought clippers and Ill need to do it 3 times to make it worth the purchase. Who knows, maybe I’ll get good enough at it that he can just have me do it from now on;)

It does not really feel like May weather here. Despite a few oddly warm days, it’s kind of chilly and gray. Not pool weather at all. You got in some great mileage this week!

Thanks! I feel like we have been complaining about the weather for so long now. It’s got to warm up for good soon!

I’ve been off the treadmill since mid March and loving it, but I’ll be back there very soon for my summer long runs. We went from 30’s to 80’s and lol, it’s kind of an adjustment. I’m determined to stay on the road for the rest of May and then I’ll start bringing the TM back into my world. I’m bad, I almost never use the incline on it.

      May 25, 2020 at 2:48 pm

I think its ok to not use the incline if you’re also doing some runs outside. It’s so hilly here that I feel like I never get to run on flat terrain. Also, my treadmill sometimes squeaks when I raise or lower the incline so I feel like its better for now to just leave it flat so I dont risk messing it up and needing repairs.

I feel you on the weather. We had two frosty mornings last week. Then monsoons. Yesterday is was 90 and SO humid. Truly we are all over the place but we really don’t get a spring anymore. My husband predicted this pandemic would be a long haul. I thought he was exaggerating at the time but he was right! There’s talk of a few things opening on June 3 here. Not enough though!

      May 25, 2020 at 2:50 pm

I kind of think it was good that when this all started most of us thought it would last a few weeks or a month or so. It would have been so hard to wrap our minds around dealing with this for the long haul when we were first starting out! Now I feel like we have gotten through so much that we know we can adjust to get through it.

Our weather has been all over the place too, and we had some really bad humidity on Saturday – it came outta nowhere!

One good thing that has come from all of this for me is that I know I can survive solely on at home workouts. I’ve always done at home workouts but I’ve also been a member of a gym for the past few years. I never imagined that I would have the discipline to continue getting in all my workouts without a coach so that’s one big positive I’ve learned about myself.

That’s really great! And it will feel really nice whenever you can get back to your group fitness classes, but now you know you can do it on your own.

We’re still under stay at home order until June 8 though neighbouring Virginia and Maryland have eased their restrictions. I just wish people exercised some caution and understand that we’re not going back to things exactly as well as left them… like you said, it’s a new normal, we can’t just ast like nothing happened over the past 10 weeks…

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 25, 2020 at 2:57 pm

Exactly! Just because restrictions are eased doesn’t mean the risk is gone.

I’m glad it’s starting to warm up for you.

Everything is opening up. Theme parks are supposed to be ready to start on June 5, which is just crazy to me, but I guess we will just have to see how it all goes. There is normalcy, but a weirdness to everything, and I’m just trying to balance that vibe.

      May 25, 2020 at 3:01 pm

I can’t believe parks will be opening up! I know at some point I will need to go back into the real world but Im just not ready!

Our weather definitely did not feel like May last week, either. Then, bam! Summer arrived around 1:00 Saturday afternoon LOL I don’t do much treadmill time (as you know), but I always have it on the first incline setting at the minimum. I read somewhere (years ago) that a little bit of incline, even just that first subtle “notch,” mimicked the outdoors. Who knows? I don’t run on it enough to really affect me either way….and I’m okay with that ;-a0

      May 25, 2020 at 3:02 pm

I’ve heard that too. I figure its ok to keep it flat since I dont run on their very often. When I do longer runs I adjust it throughout the run.

Has it been 10 weeks? I kept seeing that number in various other posts but forgot to mention it. I just checked my calendar and I counted the weeks. This will be my 11th week working from home. While it did seemed long, it did go by fast.

Things will start opening up sometime this weekend or next week. I haven’t watched the news so not really sure. Although my mother’s dentist did call and they told me she could go tomorrow.

I like alternating the incline on the treadmill but nothing too drastic. I usually do 0%-1%.

It’s really weird to think of how long its been and what it will be like over the next few months. We started opening a few things but it really doesn’t seem much different since its still advised that we stay at home.

Nice job! Wow, has it really been 10 weeks?! Sometimes I’m cool with it, other times I really miss the interaction with other people! I haven’t been on a treadmill in so long! But I do tend to keep the incline low when I do use it as my neighborhood is pretty hilly!

Describing week 10 of the quarantine as mile 10 of a marathon was perfect. We have already done a lot and we have even more left to go. Glad you had a good long run. Your 10K pace is speedy!

      May 26, 2020 at 4:20 am

It’s weird to think about it that way, right? I try not to think too much about where we will be a few months from now. One day at a time!

I don’t think we ever thought we’d still be home 10 weeks later — or still content to be home longer. I’m in no hurry to go back yet.
I’ve dusted off my treadmill for Peloton workouts and love it for that. It’s hard to force myself to do a long/steady-state run on a treadmill – those buttons demand intervals! We venture to my mom’s neighborhood for bike rides (and drop off whatever grocery items she couldn’t get delivered) but I’ve kept my runs close to home. You got in some great workouts!

My treadmill is getting lonely these days! No worries, it will get used sooner or later. It went from cool, to summer and I think the weather will be cooling down a little bit again soon. 10 week s – Who knew this was going to last so long? I remember when the virus was just an annoying presidential conference that was interrupting our Olympic Trials viewing party!!

It really is crazy to think back on those first few weeks when we started hearing about it! I dont think any of us imagined that all of this would happen.

I”m in Northern Virginia so things here are similar to where you are. This truly has been a crazy spring, from being stuck at home to an unusually cool spring. I was happy that we had a pretty decent weekend, weather wise.

Hope you’re having a great week!

I definitely notice that all of this feels a little bit easier when the weather is nice!

Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 mile MP/1 mile easy. I took a few hours of PTO in the morning to do this on the trail because I knew wouldn’t be able to do it this weekend. This was my first time on the trail since my marathon last November. It was nice to be back there and the perfect place to do this kind of long run. It was the kind of run where you start thinking “ok cool I just did a tough MP workout” but then you remember you actually need to run 26 miles in a row at that pace. Luckily there’s still 9 more weeks of training…although that doesn’t really sound like that much!
41 miles for the week and got in 2 strength sessions. Taking it easy this weekend other than chasing the kids around for all their activities! #run #marathontraining #longrun
It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It is a little frustrating to have to plan more time for an easy run. But it’s definitely worth it to recover quicker and feel better on workout days! #run #marathongtraining #easyrun
You know marathon training is starting to get real You know marathon training is starting to get real when you start losing track of what training week it is. I had to check my calendar but this was week 6, so 10 weeks to go!

I ran the Charles Street 12 last weekend so this week was all about easy miles and recovering from the race. That went well until I went and ran all the hills yesterday followed by walking around a maze and fun park for 5 hours. I got in some strength and mobility this morning and now I’m back to focusing on recovery!

If you’re training for a race how many weeks do you have left?

15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 9 15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 91% humidity 🫠 Pretty sure that was harder than my race last weekend, but got it done. Now off to my second workout of the day- taking the kids to an outdoor fun park. RIP to my legs.
What are you up to this weekend?
