Year in Running 2020

2020 was a year like no other. Somehow, amidst the chaos of the world, this was my best running year in a long time. (That’s not saying much, after years of injuries, pregnancy, and postpartum running.) There’s something to be said for the no pressure approach to running. Also, working from home and not having to commute to work helps too! Let’s look at my year in running for 2020.

It was a year unlike any other. Even though races were canceled, the running still happened. Overall 2020 was a successful year in running. Here is a summary of my year.

2020 Stats

Obviously the year isn’t quite over yet, but let’s look at some running stats so far.

  • Miles run (as of 12/15/20): 1,331.6 miles
  • Races (all virtual): 12
  • Pairs of shoes: 8
  • Average pace: 9:23/mile
  • Average distance/week: 33.7 miles
  • Total elevation: 54,623 feet
  • (Bonus) Bottles of wine to get through 2020: 4,236

Best Race

I didn’t have any in-person races this year. The only race I was signed up for at the beginning of the year was a May half-marathon. It was postponed until September and then went virtual.

In the spring I signed up for the Rambing Runner’s Race Series which included a 5k, 10k, and Half-Marathon. (There was also a full which I didn’t do.). I would say my best race of the year was the virtual half I ran in April as part of this series.

half marathon

I ran 1 second faster than my PR, despite doing just about everything wrong. Even though I didn’t put in a full training cycle for a half this turned out well and made me hopeful for how I would do once real races are a thing again.

Just for fun, here are the virtual races I did:

  • Rambling Runner 5k
  • Rambling Runner 10k
  • Rambling Runner Half (unofficial PR)
  • Live Give Run 5k (unofficial PR)
  • UniverSole 10k (unofficial PR)
  • Global Running Day 5k
  • Run Happy Family Virtual Stroller Race (Summer)
  • Frederick Half-Marathon
  • MCM 10k
  • Run Happy Family Virtual Stroller Race (Fall)
  • Gobble Gobble Turkey Trot 10 Miler
  • Run and Give Back 5k

I did that based on memory so who knows if I forgot something! That’s alot more races that I usually do in a year!

I also did the “Race Across Maryland” over the summer. The goal was to run 250 miles in 60 days. I started by including walking miles, but ended up reaching my goal (and beyond) with just running miles. It was a great way to stay motivated with runs and walks this summer!

Best Run

I really can’t pick one! It’s like the runs that you don’t remember are usually the better ones, right? Like if it doesn’t stand out as hard, hot/humid, cold/windy or a mental struggle then it was probably a good run.

morning run

I had alot of good runs this year, which I am very grateful for. I definitely appreciated my solo miles outside because I didn’t get much alone time this year!

Best Piece of Gear

I was so lucky to get to try a lot of Brooks gear this year. I loved all of it! I was surprised to fall in love with the Glycerin 18s, which are a cushioned running shoe. I wasn’t really running in shoes with much cushion before but these were just so comfortable.

glycerins

I also ended up switching from the Pure Flows to the Hyperion Tempos for my faster runs. The newer versions of the Pure Flows weren’t really working for me anymore. The Hyperion Tempos are so light, I barely feel like I have anything on my feet!

Best Running Advice

I heard alot of great running advice this year but none of it really stuck with me. I’ve just been doing what works for me, and making adjustments as needed. I did get alot of great advice from Mary in regards to strength training.

squats

One things that stood out recently was a quote that coworker shared that can apply to life or running: “Where you are now is not where you will always be”. I think that’s so important to remember, especially this year. When things are not going well, remember that they can get better. And when things are going great, enjoy it, because it won’t last forever.

Most Inspirational Running

I’m going to cheat on this and pick a few people for different reasons.

The first is Des Linden, who runs for Brooks. I followed her more closely this year and was especially impressed by her run streak in October. She ran the day of the month in miles every day. Talk about an ambitious goal to have when races are cancelled!

des linden

Another is Sara Hall. She ran the London Marathon which was for elites only and got 2nd place. Did you know that the route was a loop that was just over mile, so they had to run it 20+ times? Hearing her talk about her experience on some podcasts really helped me to see how challenging that race was and how much she pushed for a strong finish!

sara hall

Back in the spring we all watched the marathon trials before the world fell apart, and were introduced to Molly Seidel who placed 2nd. It was her first time running a marathon, EVER! I’ve been following her on Instagram and she cracks me up. Recently she dressed up as a turkey and tried to run the FKT (fastest known turkey) time.

Summary of Year

Well no one really needs a summary of 2020. But my running in 2020 was pretty great! I took on random challenges throughout the year, I ran just for fun, I backed off when I needed to, but I also pushed hard when I wanted a good challenge.

This year was all about staying connected. Blogging and instagram allowed me to do that with the running community. Some runners I’ve known online for up to 7 years or so, others I just met this year. The online running community in general is so supportive and fun.

bloggers turkey trot

There were also alot of stroller miles this year. Early this year I was not running with the stroller as much. Grayson would get fussy in there and it became frustrating for me. But I realized that if I wanted to run more during the quarantine that I would need to figure out a way to do more stroller runs. The more I ran with him, the better it got. I kind of wish I had tracked how many stroller miles I ran this year!

Favorite Picture

I couldn’t pick just one, so I made a little gallery with some of my favorites from this year!

  • Running in Texas in January
  • Treadmill half-marathon
  • Camp Run Happy Weekend
  • Virtual Stroller 5k
  • Apparently I smell bad after I run!
  • Dressing as Desi for Halloween
  • Finishing Rundester Run Streak
  • fall running
  • Turkey Trot 10 Miler

2020 may have been a challenging year, but there were many good things that happened too. I’m choosing to focus on those, while hoping that 2021 brings more positive experiences and maybe even some lives races!

Congrats on a great running year, Lisa!
I’m sure you’ll pass 1’400 miles by the end of the month. A lot of virtual races, too. I remember you running that half-marathon PR. That was an amazing feat!

I’m amazed at how many shoes you used – that’s an average of 166 miles per pair. I should really learn to change my shoes more often like you do. I use mine far too long.

I usually wear mine to about 400 miles but I rotate through a bunch at the same time (so out of the 8 I wore this year I am still wearing 4 of them and they each have like less than 100 miles on them). I can definitely feel when they are too worn out though!

No real stand out moments running wise for this year, although I do think regular running was something that kept me sane during all the strangeness of the year.

I am current about 60 miles off 1200 miles for the year, so you can guess what my goal is now until the 31st Dec 🙂

Thats’s a great goal! Even though I could make it to 1400 miles this year I probably won’t since I’m backing off a bit this month. Running was definitely helpful for getting through the crazy year!

You really had a strong year, despite #2020. It’s amazing what we can do when we choose to face the challenges life (or Covid LOL) throws at us. Just think of how much stronger you are for all of those stroller miles…you definitely will have an edge when the real races return 😉

I hope so! It’s going to feel weird to line up for a real race again! I’ve only done once since Grayson was born, and before that my last one was in March 2018!

This year really was about staying connecting and persevering. You did have a great year of running and stroller miles are always impressive to me. Way to end the year strong!

Thanks! All the stroller running definitely felt like a big accomplishment this year!

I agree, you really did have a great running year even without any in person races.

Hopefully there will be some in 2021 and maybe we will meet at one.

I think this year for me has been persevering and running through it all and most importantly staying connected with friends (both in person and virtual ones).

      December 16, 2020 at 5:09 pm

Yes, I definitely agree with that! Staying connected has been so important!

I love how you focused on all the positives! And there were many. I’m sure being able to run more with the stroller was a big help. I.cant.even imagine that! it’s for the young. 🙂

I think you’ve set yourself up for a great 2021, and I’m sure there will be live races — at some point!

I think not racing (at all!) this year was actually good for me in a way. Maybe it was a cutback year. 🙂 It was certainly a time to experiment!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      December 16, 2020 at 5:10 pm

I also think not doing real races was a good thing for me. It gave me more flexibility to push hard when I felt good and back off when I needed a break, rather than following a specific training plan.

Connection and commitment. I think those are the two things that helped me get through.

You did have a great year. I’m scared to think about how many bottles of wine we consumed. My only saving grace is that I was on pretty hardcore meds for the first quarter of the year so no drinking for me. Then again, I’ve probably made up for it LOL!

2021 is going to be our year!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      December 16, 2020 at 5:12 pm

Ha! The wine consumption was pretty ridiculous this year- between everything going on plus I was almost done breastfeeding and after years of having to limit my wine because of pregnancy/nursing it was nice to just drink whatever I wanted:)

You did so many virtual races! Awesome job! Here’s to an even better 2021!

Thank you! Hopefully 2021 is a much better year!

That’s a lot of elevation gain in one year – and it’s impressive how much of it you did with the stroller! You have set yourself up for such a strong 2021.
Not having races this year helped me realize the advantage of having a large base season, but I am excited to hopefully race in the second half of 2021!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      December 17, 2020 at 4:58 am

Yes, I am also optimistic about race later next year!

  11. Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder says

    December 17, 2020 at 12:15 pm

Wow that’s a lot of wine bottles! I don’t blame you though 2020 was a heck of a year!

I LOVE my Hyperion Tempos! It may actually be my new favorite shoe. I’ve really gotten into the racing and training shoes that have been coming out- I love the fact that the brands have lightweight shoes with cushion and higher drops. I’ve never been able to run in anything below a 7mm drop without causing myself achilles tendon issues so previous racing flats never worked well for me.

Great job on your virtual races and unofficial PRs! That’s some dedication right there!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      December 19, 2020 at 5:28 am

Haha I definitely didn’t drink THAT many bottles of wine:) Maybe I averaged like 1 a week. The hyperion tempos are so great!

15 mile long run workout this morning! Honestly, e 15 mile long run workout this morning! Honestly, every step of this felt challenging, so I’m pretty happy that I still hit my paces. I’m going to blame it on the humidity. WHY is it still so warm and humid when it’s almost October 😩🥵 I made the mistake of leaving my hair in a ponytail so of course it was a tangled mess by the time I was done. When will I learn? Just glad I got this done to wrap up week 9 of @richmondmarathon training! Is it still humid where you are? #run #marathontraining #richmondmarathon #longrun
Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 mile MP/1 mile easy. I took a few hours of PTO in the morning to do this on the trail because I knew wouldn’t be able to do it this weekend. This was my first time on the trail since my marathon last November. It was nice to be back there and the perfect place to do this kind of long run. It was the kind of run where you start thinking “ok cool I just did a tough MP workout” but then you remember you actually need to run 26 miles in a row at that pace. Luckily there’s still 9 more weeks of training…although that doesn’t really sound like that much!
41 miles for the week and got in 2 strength sessions. Taking it easy this weekend other than chasing the kids around for all their activities! #run #marathontraining #longrun
It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It is a little frustrating to have to plan more time for an easy run. But it’s definitely worth it to recover quicker and feel better on workout days! #run #marathongtraining #easyrun
You know marathon training is starting to get real You know marathon training is starting to get real when you start losing track of what training week it is. I had to check my calendar but this was week 6, so 10 weeks to go!

I ran the Charles Street 12 last weekend so this week was all about easy miles and recovering from the race. That went well until I went and ran all the hills yesterday followed by walking around a maze and fun park for 5 hours. I got in some strength and mobility this morning and now I’m back to focusing on recovery!

If you’re training for a race how many weeks do you have left?
