Thoughts Involving Summer And Running

It’s probably no surprise that I will be talking about summer and running today. Lately that is all I talk about, along with food (occasionally).

summer running

I give those of you who run in the afternoons/evenings so much credit. I ran 2 miles with a coaching client Wednesday afternoon, which was a relatively cooler day, and it was still so hot! I’m definitely not used to running with the sun beating down on me.

weather

How did I ever survive running in the summer without Nuun? It’s seriously a game changer. I always keep a cold bottle in the fridge so it’s ready for me to grab as soon as I walk in from my run.

nuun

I broke down and started wearing my last pair of Pure Flow 2s. I had bought a bunch of them on sale last year, and now I don’t think they have them in my size anywhere. I like the 3s but not as much as the 2s. I haven’t tried the 4s yet. Now I have four pairs of running shoes in the rotation…maybe its a little excessive, but I’m actually about to retire one of those so maybe it’s not that bad.

shoes

Shortly after I posted about my 5k, the race photos were posted online. You can kind of see the sprint to the finish!

race finish

This may not have anything to do directly with summer or running, but it’s still important. You may remember a few weeks ago I mentioned in a  “Thinking Out Loud” post that we had the slowest water dispenser in our fridge. Well, we have to replace the filter so I took the old one out to see what kind it is, and when I put it back in suddenly the water started coming out a million times faster! This has seriously improved my life over the past two days. I felt like I was constantly standing at the fridge filling up my glass because I drink so much water and it was coming out so slowly.

water

This weekend I have some exciting plans: On Thursday afternoon I’ll be heading to DC with two of my friends since elementary school- one is engaged and one is pregnant! We will hang out in DC for the night and head to Baltimore on Friday to spend the night here. Then on Saturday I’m going to the Billy Joel concert with my family! I have always been a huge fan since I grew up on Long Island, and I have seen him in concert a few time and it’s always a great show! That being said, I’ll be far away from blogging for a few days. Although I do have a recipe prepped and ready to share tomorrow!

thinking out loud
Thanks, Amanda!

Do you ever run in the afternoon/evening? How do you do it in the summer?!

How many pairs of shoes do you rotate at a time?

Are you a Billy Joel fan?  Favorite Billy Joel song? I would have to say “Just The Way You Are” because it’s our wedding song, but there are so many good ones!

We are on the same wave length today!!!! I am rotating a few shoes too and I think I like it this way but then I lose track of when I got which shoe and how many miles are on each lol…I love billy joel, my all time favorite singer! Uptown Girl is my favorite song but I really love them all. I saw Big Shot last week which is his tribute band (no clue if they only play here in new York or travel) and I know Billy’s last show at the coliseum is in August – haven’t been to one since his 1998 tour but he is on the regular now at the garden and plays in Brooklyn a lot too. Have the best weekend!

You just reminded to add my shoe mileage to my training log! Thats the only way Im ever able to keep track.
I think I saw Big Shot on LI but haven’t heard of them playing anywhere else.

I am literally the only LI person who is not a Billy Joel fan! Adam and everyone else I know loves him and I just can’t! Something is wrong with me!

Anyway it sounds like you’ll have an amazing time this weekend! I’m so glad I don’t have to run late – Adam coaches cross country and has to run at 4pm with them which I can’t imagine, even for 3 miles!

    • [email protected] says

      July 23, 2015 at 2:55 pm

Haha I really don’t know anyone else from LI who doesn’t like Billy!
I couldn’t image in running at 4pm every day…although maybe you get used to it?

  3. Cheryl says

They had a tribute to Billy Joel before the fireworks on the 4th of July in Boston. He had the person who plays him in a musical singing, so I googled him to see what he was up to…I came across a recent interview. I have a lot of respect for all the things he said, basically NOTHING bad about anyone, even those who wronged him. He seemed really comfortable in his own skin, and confident. Anyway, I grew up LOVING his songs. He is such a great musician…

    • [email protected] says

      July 23, 2015 at 2:58 pm

Thats really great to know! I bet the tribute before the fireworks was a great show.

I ran in the afternoon/evening yesterday, and it was actually lovely. It was warm but not that humid, so I got lucky. I wish I liked Nuun. I really do. But I don’t. But cold water is always much appreciated after the run!

  5. Kimberley says

    July 23, 2015 at 8:05 am

I live in south Florida and almost always run in the afternoon after work. I love running in the heat, but even this high temp girl has a problem with the oppressive humidity sometimes. That lovely feeling of an elephant sitting on your chest can be a bit of a pain in the butt! And, I think I’m the only runner out there with just one pair of shoes, lol!

  6. Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says

    July 23, 2015 at 8:09 am

    Let’s see, we saw Billy in college . . . 30 yrs ago. 🙂

I usually have about 4 or so different shoes in rotation, too. I hear the PF4s are better than the 3s but haven’t actually tried them myself.

I’m running in the afternoon/evening at least 2x week. You sort of get used to it.

  7. Brandie says

    July 23, 2015 at 8:16 am

Sounds like a really fun weekend planned. Enjoy!!

I can’t run in the evening when it’s as humid as it’s been. My allergies are too bad and it’s too much of a struggle to breath for me. I wish I could – I don’t mind the sweating, it’s the breathing I can’t handle. So, I’ve been resorting to running on my treadmill first thing in the morning. Once it starts to cool off again, I can’t wait to get back out there and pound pavement!

    • [email protected] says

      July 23, 2015 at 2:59 pm

It can be so much harder to run outside when its hot and humid! I have a feeling if I had a treadmill option I would resort to that on occasion as well!

  8. Laura @ This Runner's Recipes says

    July 23, 2015 at 8:45 am

I haven’t run in the afternoon since last summer when I’d run with Ryan, and that was always so rough with the humidity! Right now I’m rotating two pairs of shoes, which works really well my feet and I think makes the shoes last longer.

    • [email protected] says

      July 23, 2015 at 3:00 pm

I always have at least 2 pairs- I definitely think its better for our feet rather than wearing the same ones every day!

I’ve never had nuun, but I really need/want to try it!

    • [email protected] says

      July 23, 2015 at 3:00 pm

You should definitely try it! But try a bunch of different flavors because not all of them are for everyone, but your will probably find a few that you like!

  10. Nicole@Thegirlwhoraneverywhere says

    July 23, 2015 at 9:16 am

A water dispenser on my fridge would tremendously improve my life! You are lucky!

I have one new pair of Pureflow 2s….the bad news is that they’re white though and k dislike the white ones!!! I’m trying
To use my pair sparingly. I haven’t tried the 4s yet either, and I’m with you on the 3s-somehow the 2s were the best! Have fun at the concert!

We had thrown out our Brita when we moved but then I was so frustrated because the water came out SO slowly! I am so glad we figured out how to make it work because it was driving me crazy:)
I think we will need to suck it up and try the 4s soon..hopefully we like them!

the only reason I run in the afternoons is for my training group. Otherwise I am very much a morning runner. It does toughen you up and then the fall running is a piece of cake. ? Have fun with your friends and at Billy Joel! One of my faves is Piano Man. It’s a total sing along song.

    • [email protected] says

      July 23, 2015 at 3:03 pm

I should totally start running during the hottest part of the day to so that fall running feels awesome..actually no thats a terrible idea I think I would die haha! Im sure we get enough benefit out of summer running even in the mornings!

  12. Karen says

    July 23, 2015 at 9:20 am

It makes me crazy when a shoe changes and I don’t like it as much. I have three pairs in my rotation for now.
I am nuun lover as well, lemon lime…yumm.
I did one evening run this week because the humidity went under 60% and that never happens in VA, but it still felt really hard at 88 degrees lol I don’t know why I thought it would feel better.
Have a wonderful weekend! Sounds fun 🙂

Yea yesterday was cooler and less humid but still felt SO hot out! I just kept thinking about people who run in the afternoons and were out there over the weekend when it was 90 and super humid!

  13. Lesley says

I understand about shoe hoarding. I may have to do that with the ASICS GT 3’s. I made a breakthrough in my running this year when I went back to them, and I’m so scared about them changing up the design again. I want to get at least another pair if not 2.

    • [email protected] says

      July 23, 2015 at 3:04 pm

Definitely makes sense to stock up when you find a shoe you love!

I wither in the afternoon heat. Even though the humidity was a lot lower yesterday the sun was still so hot! I much prefer the sunrise with a cool breeze! My boyfriend is a huge Billy Joel fan and saw him at MSG with his family this spring. He love love loved the show! I hope you have a fabulous time and enjoy all the time with your family and friends! : )

    • [email protected] says

      July 23, 2015 at 3:05 pm

Awesome pic! There’s that girl you beat out to the finish to take the win! Ha ha ha! Poor girl. Mwuahahaha. Nice. I love running at night. I’m a solid minute-per-mile slower in the mornings no matter the heat/humidity difference. My body just doesn’t want to move!

      July 23, 2015 at 3:13 pm

I guess I’ve never tried running at “night”. That might not be as bad as 4pm was.

Yay Billy!! And what else are we supposed to talk about on running blogs during the summer? 🙂

  17. Denise says

    July 23, 2015 at 10:29 am

I like running in the morning, but I don’t usually get up early enough to do that, so most of my runs are in the late afternoon/early evening. I try to find paths that are mostly in the shade which helps a lot, but it still feels hot. I am excited to see if my pace drops when it starts to cool down. 🙂

I am currently rotating 3 pairs of shoes: two pairs of NB and one pair of Brooks Ghosts. I like giving the shoes time to dry/air out and I think it’s good for your legs, ankles, knees, etc to not run in the same pair everyday.

    • [email protected] says

      July 23, 2015 at 3:15 pm

The shade helps for sure! I noticed a difference yesterday that when I was in the shade or there was a breeze it wasn’t so bad.

  18. Maddie @ Dixie Runs says

    July 23, 2015 at 10:32 am

I’m sooooo excited to run outside today because the high is ONLY 88! That’s so sad that I get excited about 88 degrees. It’s been 95+ here lately so 88 is actually pretty cool. I swear by nuun also! It keeps me hydrated and I can really feel a difference in the heat.

    • [email protected] says

      July 23, 2015 at 3:16 pm

    • [email protected] says

      July 23, 2015 at 3:16 pm

Definitely need to keep the runs short when its this hot out! And thank goodness for Nuun lol.

  20. Hilary @ Embrace the Neon says

    July 23, 2015 at 11:31 am

I rotate between two pairs usually… though I haven’t had the heart to throw any of my old ones out so I have a ton of hiking/moving/getting dirty/just in case shoes lying around. I am an evening runner during the week due to my work and traffic schedule, and it’s one of the reasons I wish I lived in a place that had winter! It’s just so, so hot these days.

    • [email protected] says

      July 23, 2015 at 3:17 pm

The one and only thing I like about winter is you can run at any time of day…unless you don’t like running in the dark, then it gets tricky.

  21. Kelly @ The Fit Skool says

    July 23, 2015 at 1:33 pm

I feel the same way about water and of course a new filter makes life so much easier!! This hot & humid weather has me drinking gallons of water every day!

    • [email protected] says

      July 23, 2015 at 3:18 pm

Do you think that it was coming out slow because the filter was old? This was our first time dealing with a fridge filter and since we moved in its been slow. I thought maybe it was put in wrong or something.

    • [email protected] says

      July 23, 2015 at 4:12 pm

In general I prefer the mornings but its nice to at least have an option to run later if needed! These days its just way too hot and sunny all afternoon/evening. Glad to hear Im not the only one who rotates 4 pairs of shoes!

  24. Karen @ Fit in France says

I am rotating with 2 pairs of running shoes at the moment… never had more than that. I am also LOVING Nuun at the moment, just having discovered it recently. Nuun, where have you been all my life ?!

    • [email protected] says

      July 26, 2015 at 1:17 pm

Nuun is so perfect in this hot weather! And I love that its so much lighter than gatorade.

  25. Amanda @ .running with spoons. says

    July 23, 2015 at 5:11 pm

I have no idea how people run in the summer afternoons and evenings either! Heck, even being outside during those times is a struggle for me — never mind trying to run and work up a sweat as well. Eesh. I definitely take a lot more of my workouts inside during this time of the year. Have the most amazing time this weekend!

    • [email protected] says

      July 26, 2015 at 1:18 pm

Thanks! Yea, I don’t know how people run in the afternoons when its so hot! Its bad enough in the morning and thats before the sun is really up!

  26. Megan @ Meg Go Run says

    July 23, 2015 at 6:12 pm

Your upcoming weekend does sound fun! It’s funny, I just asked Paul tody if he would like to take a day trip to DC. He said I need to let him know what we’d be doing before he agrees. He is one of those people that if he has done something before, even if it was 15 years ago, he doesn’t want to do it again. I am pretty sure I have been to the Lincoln Memorial but it has been so long ago that I can’t even remember for sure if I was there! Paul on the other hand does not like to do things twice, even if he doesn’t remember them that well.

    • [email protected] says

      July 26, 2015 at 1:19 pm

Haha! Well you could find some things to do that he has never done before:) I was actually in Northern VA so not really DC, so didn’t see anything sights or anything while I was there since it was such a quick visit.

  27. Hailey says

    July 23, 2015 at 7:34 pm

I tried one flavor of Nuun a long time ago that I did’t like. I think it was tangerine something, but I just bought the cherry limeade, and oh my goodness, it’s so good!!! I just bought two pairs of running shoes so I can start rotating. I’ve done it for like two weeks max in the past, because I either got confused as to which pair I should be wearing (they were both the same color and model) or I got lazy about it. I bought two colors this time to avoid that happening again haha.

    • [email protected] says

      July 26, 2015 at 1:21 pm

I don’t think I have ever tried cherry limeade! That one sounds so good! And yes, its helpful to rotate between different looking shoes so its easier to keep track:)

Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was followed immediately by Yesterday’s long run was followed immediately by back to back kid activities, so there was no time to post about it. (I ate breakfast in the car and lunch at soccer practice- it was that kind of a day.) I was kind of nervous going in to this run, especially now that I’m getting down to last few key long runs. I had 16 miles with 4 x 2 miles on the plan, which sounded manageable but also challenging. The weather was perfect and I hit all my paces. At the end I got a little confused- thinking I was at 15 miles but I was actually at 14 🙃 Got home and realized I chafed really bad. Another long run down, and another week closer to race day.

Do you ever psych yourself out before long runs?
