Christmas Week Workouts

I hope everyone had a nice, relaxing Christmas (if you celebrate)! Last week felt like it was really three weeks rolled into one, probably because of all the traveling and different things that were going on. I ended up running a little more than I have over the past few weeks. I think I just got back into the groove and the warmer weather motivated me to get outside. Here is how the week looked:

Monday: I had an 11am flight to Detroit, and got in a  4 mile run before heading to the airport. I also did a glute strengthening workout from Jasyoga.

monday

Tuesday: I had access to the hotel gym so took advantage of being able to do a different type of cardio besides running and spent 45 minutes on the elliptical. I followed that up with a strength workout using heavier weights than what I have at home.

elliptical
I followed the “cross-train/aerobics” setting that tells you different things to do every few minutes.

Wednesday: 5 treadmill miles and core work before flying back to Baltimore.

treadmill

Thursday: I was a little sore from Tuesday’s strength training, so I did some yoga in the morning. It was 70 degrees out and I ended up heading outside for a 3 mile run later in the day.

christmas eve run

Friday: Rob and I ran just under 5 miles together on Christmas morning.

christmas

Saturday: Rest day

Sunday: 8 miles, plus core/strength work- got caught up on a few days of the #RunStrongChallenge!

sunday

Other highlights of the week included our annual beer tasting in Michigan. This year we had 9 participants and we tasted 21 beers.

beer tasting

As we tasted each of the beers we gave a rating from 1-10, and kept track so that at the end we could find out which beers had the highest average.

beer tasting scores

And of course I got to spend a few days with this little munchkin. She is growing up way too fast!
finley

As I said in Thursday’s post, we spent Christmas in Maryland for the first time this year. We had a really relaxing weekend, and I felt like I had a few days to really just do nothing. Now it’s back to work for a few days before it’s time for New Years!

How were your workouts last week?

Are you having unusually warm temps where you live?

Have you been able to find some time to relax lately?

It’s crazy warm for this time of the year! I am not really complaining although I do prefer to run in slightly cooler temperatures. I just don’t want it to snow and ice so I don’t want to make a big deal of the warmer weather lol.

      December 28, 2015 at 7:43 pm

I would rather run in 60-70 degree weather than deal with snow and ice, thats for sure! But it was kind of humid which made my runs feel a little harder.

  2. Michele @ paleorunningmomma says

    December 28, 2015 at 5:57 am

Totally agree with Meredith about the weather – it’s odd and not really loving it! You got some great workouts in considering the traveling. I haven’t been on an elliptical in years – maybe next time it’s raining 🙂

    • [email protected] says

      December 28, 2015 at 7:43 pm

The elliptical wasn’t as bad as I expected- it was kind of nice to change things up a bit!

Seattle had its normal mild weather, but St. Louis was warm when Ryan and I arrived! Then the warm weather led to flash floods, which is no fun. Great job in getting in your workouts with all that travel!

We have had so much rain lately! I was thinking of how much snow that would have been if it was colder. Enjoy the rest of your week!!

  4. Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says

    December 28, 2015 at 7:56 am

We had unusually warm temps for much of last week, but not humid — definitely changed today when I woked up to 20s and Chester insisted I had to stand outside at 4 am while he did his business.

Not to mention the forecast for tomorrow: snow, changing to wintry mix, changing to rain. Lovely!

This weather is so crazy! I think we all got a bit spoiled with the warmer temps last week:)

  5. Susie @ SuzLyfe says

    December 28, 2015 at 8:09 am

The only issue that I have with the warmer temps is that it is raining a bit more, and snow is better for crutching as it comes down, but I’m fine with the fact that there is no snow on the ground!

    • [email protected] says

      December 28, 2015 at 7:47 pm

I would have thought snow would be really difficult for crutches! I will just vote for no precipitation at all, but I’d like the warmer temps to stick around a bit longer:)

This is a much needed week of relaxing for me, and running at very easy paces due to my two January halfs coming up just two weeks apart from one another! Looks like the temps are going down this week though 🙂

      December 28, 2015 at 7:48 pm

I hope you have a great week of relaxing! Its a great time of year for easy runs, I think:)

These warmer temps have been crazy! I couldn’t believe I was out running in shorts and a tank this month. I was actually able to keep up with my runs last week, but wasn’t able to fit in a longer run since we’ve been running all over Maryland the last few days to see family. I’m looking forward to relaxing this week!

    • [email protected] says

      December 28, 2015 at 7:49 pm

I really could not believe I was in a tank top and shorts either. Its gonna be so hard to adjust as it gets cold again!

I also went for a run on Christmas since it was so nice here. Unfortunately it will be cooling down this wk and possible snow showers tonight. For being home this yr, it was still very busy running different places seeing family that were local. You niece is adorable!

Its getting cold here too this week, and now I feel like I just want it to be spring already! I hope you get to relax a little bit this week!

      December 28, 2015 at 7:51 pm

I don’t have a gym membership so I was excited to have access to some of the equipment in the hotel gym! I also loved that it was empty most of the time I was in there:)

It looks like you had a great Christmas and I love that you do an annual beer tasting. How fun! I kept up with my runs late week and even got in extra strength training so I was happy about that. We are supposed to get hi with a winter storm today but being that it is December 28 and we only had snow once so far (that melted quickly) I can’t complain!

    • [email protected] says

      December 28, 2015 at 7:52 pm

I am nervous for what the rest of the winter will bring! I am really hoping that we aren’t getting snow in April:)

Beer tasting sounds so fun! I have never been, though I have wine tasted a million times. I’m actually going today 🙂 my workouts last week were pretty much non-existent as I was soaking up being with family and friends and resting as much as possible!

      December 28, 2015 at 7:54 pm

Have fun wine tasting! Beer tasting is fun, but much different than wine tasting. Some of the beers I really don’t like, whereas I don’t think I have ever tried a wine that I didnt like:)

    December 28, 2015 at 10:35 am

We also had super warm weather last week, but we are going to pay for it now. 8-12 inches of snow and ice are coming tonight/tomorrow. I’m happy I took full advantage of it and got in some outside miles as the sidewalks will be a mess for a few days.
I love your family’s beer tasting tradition. I really want to have an ugly Christmas sweater party when I am in my own place and my friends would love doing something like that! Have a great week off from work!

I can’t believe you are getting all that snow! I don’t think we have any snow in our forecast, but now Im scared to check…
That ugly sweater party sounds like a great idea!

You and Rob look great in your Christmas colors

I thought I would enjoy the warmer running temps but it was too warm for my liking! Christmas Eve my run was horrible. So hot/stuffy outside. Today I am eying the temp and it looks like 40- hopefully I have a good run today because I took off the last two days! My legs have been tired and I just haven’t been motivated to run.

Sounds like an awesome week between getting good workouts in and spending time with family and friends! Cool that your beer tasting event is an annual tradition for you! This year we went to a party where the hosts had a beer exchange. Everyone brought a 6-pack, and there were three rounds where each person got to pick 2 beers. It seemed like a fun way for people to try different beers. Have a great week!

That beer tradition sounds really great! I really enjoy trying new beers but I am always too nervous to try them when I am out because I don’t want to pay for a full beer if I don’t like it.

    December 28, 2015 at 4:20 pm

Relax??? What exactly does that mean, lol. Yes I guess I did do more relaxing than I had wanted to do because of the rain. The beer tasting sounds like so much fun, I’m not a beer drinker but it’s only because I haven’t found the one I like, I’m still on a mission though!
I didn’t get in a Christmas run but a hike up Stone Mountain, it does count right? If it doesn’t surely the 12 very hilly training miles for a very flat marathon did the trick! Thanks for link up with us Lisa, enjoy your week! 🙂

I’m still waiting on that relaxing part… I want you to know I actually did a yoga routine last night (after I had already posted my weekly wrap). It definitely helped. I may try it again tonight. Gosh — who am I? LOL. The beer tasting sounds like fun. I love that you kept score and actually picked a real winner. My hubs loves all types of beer. It sounds like you got your workouts done in what I know must have been a busy week. Kudos. The weather here has just been “wrong”. I can’t wait for a cool down. Thanks for linking, Lisa. Happy New Year!

Way to keep the workouts going during a very busy week! It was mild here over Christmas but all that came to a grinding halt here yesterday when we got a 12 hour ice storm topped with 2hrs of heavy snow. Welcome to reality!

15 mile long run workout this morning! Honestly, e 15 mile long run workout this morning! Honestly, every step of this felt challenging, so I’m pretty happy that I still hit my paces. I’m going to blame it on the humidity. WHY is it still so warm and humid when it’s almost October 😩🥵 I made the mistake of leaving my hair in a ponytail so of course it was a tangled mess by the time I was done. When will I learn? Just glad I got this done to wrap up week 9 of @richmondmarathon training! Is it still humid where you are? #run #marathontraining #richmondmarathon #longrun
Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 mile MP/1 mile easy. I took a few hours of PTO in the morning to do this on the trail because I knew wouldn’t be able to do it this weekend. This was my first time on the trail since my marathon last November. It was nice to be back there and the perfect place to do this kind of long run. It was the kind of run where you start thinking “ok cool I just did a tough MP workout” but then you remember you actually need to run 26 miles in a row at that pace. Luckily there’s still 9 more weeks of training…although that doesn’t really sound like that much!
41 miles for the week and got in 2 strength sessions. Taking it easy this weekend other than chasing the kids around for all their activities! #run #marathontraining #longrun
It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It is a little frustrating to have to plan more time for an easy run. But it’s definitely worth it to recover quicker and feel better on workout days! #run #marathongtraining #easyrun
You know marathon training is starting to get real You know marathon training is starting to get real when you start losing track of what training week it is. I had to check my calendar but this was week 6, so 10 weeks to go!

I ran the Charles Street 12 last weekend so this week was all about easy miles and recovering from the race. That went well until I went and ran all the hills yesterday followed by walking around a maze and fun park for 5 hours. I got in some strength and mobility this morning and now I’m back to focusing on recovery!

If you’re training for a race how many weeks do you have left?
