A Fall Snowstorm and Slowing Down

This week we had our first snow of the year on Thursday. This fall snowstorm brought sleet, freezing rain, and about 2 inches of snow. It was enough to close schools on Thursday and cause a delayed opening on Friday. The weather prevented me from running outside on those two days and I opted for the treadmill instead. I felt like this week was all thrown off!

A fall snowstorm and slowing down

As much as I love a good snow day, just because schools are closed my job doesn’t stop and I was working from home. However, there were things I needed to do in the office and I couldn’t get in. (My office is now located in the back of a school). Usually I can plan for potential snow days by bringing things home with me or staying late the day before, but this fall snowstorm was pretty unexpected! I really thought it would end up just being rain.

Overall I felt like I was slowing down even more this week. But that’s to be expected, right? When I ran on the treadmill I stopped a bunch of times to drink water or walk a little. Outside I tend to still run the whole time unless there’s a big hill or something and I just feel like I need a break. Once in a while I surprise myself with my paces and other times I really just ignore them.

Monday: 5 miles

It was chilly but in a good way! I think I’m used to the colder weather now and 38 degrees feels good as long as there’s not much wind. (Also, I think my body temperature is just generally higher from being pregnant which works in my favor for cold weather running!)

monday run
Tuesday: Strength training

No time for both running and strength training so skipped the run.

Wednesday: 5 miles

As I got dressed for my run I realized I didn’t have any clean running shirts that fit and were warm enough. So I pulled out one of Rob’s shirts which ended up working out just fine. It was a fitted shirt for him so it didn’t look too weird on me.

wednesday run
Thursday: 3 miles and strength training

This was the day of the snowstorm. I started with strength training and then hopped on the treadmill for 3 miles.

thursday run during a snowstorm
Friday: 6 miles

Another treadmill run. This ended up taking forever between running slower and stopping to drink water and walk. Luckily we had a delayed opening and I also had a doctor’s appointment in the morning so I wasn’t so rushed. It’s just crazy how much longer it takes me to do these runs now!

friday run
Saturday: 5 miles

It felt so good to get outside again! The snow on the sidewalks had melted but I still felt like I had to watch out for slick spots. It’s was weird to see so many leaves on the ground and also snow on the grass! What season is it?!

saturday run
Sunday: 3 miles

It was chilly out but pretty good running weather! I noticed that on both Saturday and Sunday my paces were faster than they have been during the week. Maybe it’s because of getting extra sleep on the weekends? Who knows.

sunday run

Another week down, and only 5 more to go! I expect these last few weeks will bring even less running and even slower miles, but hopefully I can keep getting out there!

Our snow didn’t last through the day, but with all the rain and freezing temperatures there were still slick spots. I haven’t been on my own TM in ages – I get a quick fix at Orange Theory.

The freezing rain made it really messy out there last week!

We got a lot more snow than was originally forecasted last week. I know that for us, it was because it was a few degrees colder than everyone thought which caused more snow instead of rain.

I have my fingers crossed you can keep running these next 5 weeks!

I think many of us were surprised with how the snow played out last week!

you were smart to stick to the treadmill for those days. It was still pretty wet and slick outside the day after the storm. The roads were fine but I noticed the sidewalks were still a mess!

I probably could have run outside Thursday morning because it didn’t start snowing until around 7:30, but it was supposed to start earlier. Oh well!

Wow! How crazy to get a school snow day so early in the season. The weather has been whacky everywhere, I swear. I never noticed if my treadmill runs differ from outside that much. I definitely have to fight the urge to shorten them though!

Sometimes I set my pace higher than I would naturally run outside because I’m staring at it, but I tend to stop more because its an option!

I’m always slower on the treadmill. I was hoping to get my run done outside yesterday, and ended up on the treadmill. While things did start to melt, it wasn’t enough and the sidewalks were dicey. We still have snow too in shady spots.

Sounds like it was a good choice to stick to the treadmill!

Even though your body slows down those last weeks, that slower pace is still keeping your fitness high! You’re doing awesome!
Your schools were smart to close- ours let out regular time and then it was chaos- thankfully we can walk to pick up Lily, but kids at some schools got stuck there overnight because the buses never made it through the snow! And several of my neighbors spent 10-12 hours stuck with their kids in the car… it was a crazy day.

That sounds like a mess! It did turn out to be a smart call to close schools. Our district is so big and some busses have to travel really far. It would have been a mess trying to get kids home in that!

We got snow as well this past week, too early for that! I finally got out for a run today and there was still some slick spots from the snow melting. Well good thing you found an extra shirt of Rob’s to get your run done:)

It’s amazing how much the hormones will warm me up. Of course, I’m in a different hormone universe, but I’m barely ever cold these days!!! Nice work as always, Lisa. You are amazing.

You guys really got hammered out east! We had a mere dusting of snow overnight Friday, but it was a little slick underneath it. Winter needs to pause for a few weeks….it’s too early!

Seriously! There will be plenty of more time for this kind of weather.

We got a decent amount of snow last week also! Facebook shared a memory with me of when we got snow this early 10 years ago (same city) and that was a really bad winter, so I am wonder how bad this winter will be. You were smart to stick to the treadmill. It’s so dull but it definitely is a useful tool on very slick and snowy days.

Hopefully this winter isn’t too bad! I keep hearing mixed things about how winter will be here. I just really hope we don’t have a snowstorm when I go into labor!

Mama, you look fantastic to be so close to your due date. Don’t forget, your slow is still someone’s fast. 😉 I have no doubt you’ll bounce back quickly. We actually had snow last December, which is very rare. I don’t expect any this year. Thanks for linking!

Thanks! Are you are right- it’s all relative! And right now my “fast” was once my “slow” lol.

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
