Catching Up And Thinking Out Loud

It’s been awhile since I did a thinking out loud post. For some reason, it’s usually harder for me to sit down and write random, spontaneous posts. You would think those would be easier to write, but I have a tough time switching off my brain from the structure of the work day. This will be a combination of photo-dump style thoughts and other things going on lately.

-This week I have been trying to get into other workouts again- barre, yoga, pilates, etc. We FINALLY set up a DVD player after moving 8 months ago. So I have been able to use some DVDs which has been a nice change.

barre

-It’s worked out well that it’s been raining a lot and I haven’t had much of a desire to run in the rain. Especially when I know that I’m not on any sort of a running schedule now anyway and the more time off the better at this point. Not that I like the rain or anything.

-I think my least favorite part about rain is driving in it. I had to do quite a bit of driving on both Tuesday and Wednesday and both days it poured all day long. PS Will it ever stop raining?!

-Speaking of annoying driving situations, busses that take up two lanes definitely bother me.

bus

-I was thinking this week that I wouldn’t mind some snow. I almost want to take that back already, because I know I will regret it later in the winter. I would like it if it only snowed in December- I think it would feel more like the holiday season, but after that the snow (and cold) can go away.

-This is what it looks like when you wear a dress with boots to work, but when you come home you take off your shoes and just hang out in the compression socks that were underneath.

-I found this picture of Great Lakes Christmas Ale on my phone from Halloween. Rob’s parents brought us a few 6 packs when they visited, and I have been meaning to mention it on here (not sure if I ever have before). Has anyone ever tried this beer? It’s our favorite beer, but only made seasonally in the Cleveland area. Oh, and yes we sat outside drinking Christmas Ale on our porch on Halloween. #classy

And that’s about all I have for this week! Thanks, Amanda !

Yay for Pure Barre! You know that just excited me 🙂 Mile High is the best, it’s short yet burns every single time.

I think I need to give pure barre a shot again 🙂 I also hate driving in the rain, especially Tues when I was still sick and had to drive my daughters near and far to gymnastics and dance, all with my son in the car. Tons of traffic, bad roads, not fun!

Yes, it’s been raining & I’ve been using my treadmill again. I like to keep up my base, but I don’t feel the need to be bada$$ and run in the rain if I’m not training for anything.

No, I loathe snow and lived happily without it for 17 years in TX. I don’t particularly love rain, mainly because it makes life with the dogs interesting, but I like to say you don’t have to shovel rain and driving in it, while dangerous, isn’t as dangerous as driving in snow can be sometimes.

I got my snow tires put on before Thanksgiving so of course it’s not snowing now. 🙂

I’m good at spontaneous posts, sometimes they’re my best ones, but spontaneous, random posts don’t come easily to me.

no snow! i mean, it can snow xmas eve + day, but then i’m done. I don’t like the snow or ice because I really just can’t run in it. All our running paths are so hilly & have these wooden bridges that get slippery, it’s just not a good time.

also, looks like the rain finally stopped today! Of course it would stop the day i’m off from running haha.

We don’t get a lot of rain at this time of the year and we already have a nice blanket of snow covering the ground, BUT… we were getting rain a lot later this year than most years. Usually it snows by the end of October, and this year we were still getting rain in mid-November. But I’m totally with you on the snow going away right after Christmas… after that it just gets to be a pain.

It’s been raining so much here as well! I checked the weekly forecast today and it was just rain, rain, and some more rain. It’s been fun to see snow in the mountains, but I’m so glad there’s none on the ground where we live. That beer looks so good. My favorite holiday drink this year is Sierra Nevada Celebration IPA.

It has been raining here quite a bit lately. I heard on the news that had the rain been snow, it would have been 20 inches! Yikes! With the rain that means I’ve had some rainy runs this week. Its so much more fun to run in the rain in summer. I am ready for some snow and a white December but like you I will probably be regretting this statement come February!

    • [email protected] says

      December 3, 2015 at 8:20 pm

I feel ya on wanting some snow! I hate running in the rain but I’ll run in some light snow. It’s been raining here the past three days! I have never heard of that beer but it’ll have go on my list. This time of year I like a heavier beer with some holiday-ish spices, or some spiced cocoa.

    • [email protected] says

      December 3, 2015 at 8:21 pm

    December 3, 2015 at 10:03 am

I wish we got snow in December too (only if it went away after that) but I keep telling myself that the longer the snow takes to get here, the shorter the winter will be. That’s probably not even true but it makes me feel better haha and I’m not about running in the rain either right now so it has made it easier to continue this resting period and enjoy a slower morning.

I have the same thought process about winter! I felt like last year winter lingered on forever. It definitely makes it easier to back off the running when the weather is crappy.

I would love to try that Christmas ale. We have a local beer called Granville Island Winter Ale that I absolutely LOVE. It’s not a chocolate beer but it’s got hints of chocolate in it. It’s the only beer I can handle in the wintertime!

I woke up with morning and while it was overcast and kind of icky, but not raining I can’t even tell you how happy it made me. I literally lock myself inside when it’s raining. I don’t like driving in it and since I don’t work, I don’t need to, so rain for sure gives me some crazy kind of cabin fever!

Yuppp couldn’t agree more on the snow. Love it when its fresh and white and on Christmas day, but basically anytime other than that, it – and the cold – can just teeter off. And I totally do the same thing with my socks under my boots. If people could see our real fashion sense they wouldn’t know what to do with themselves! 🙂

It has been raining here the last few days too. As much as I hate the rain, it’s better than snow bc if it was snowing it’d be colder out and I’m not ready for it to get colder. I like flavored beers. That Christmas Ale sounds tasty.

The snow we had just melted and rained a bunch yesterday. I love to watch it snow and it’s so pretty in the mountains but I would rather not have it in town. This last week has been super cold and windy which makes me want to just curl up in bed.

I don’t like the cold/wind either. The snow is pretty at first but can also cause a real mess!

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
