Foot Progress and Other Thoughts of the Week

Hello again! Posting two days in a row may be a record for me recently. Maybe it’s a sign that things are finally settling down after a crazy spring/early summer?! Well they are a little bit for now, but not for long, so I might as well take advantage of having a few minutes to think out loud!

Foot Progress and Other Thoughts of the Week

Lately I have been thinking alot about shoes. And injuries. And feet. (No surprise there!) I am excited but nervous to say that my foot has responded very well to the little bit of running I started adding in. I have also been trying to figure out which shoes feel the best for work. On Tuesday I wore these black flats that happen to be Dr. Scholls. Pros: The are flat, with a little support and cushioning. Cons: The toes are tight and I would rather be wearing sandals in the summer.

work shoes

New con that I discovered as I was wearing them: Apparently they cause a blister on my heel. I never had this problem before but I don’t think I usually wear them in the summer so I’m sure my feet are more swollen.

The fact that the air conditioning in my office wasn’t working didn’t help matters. Out in the hallway it was cool, the other floors of the building were cool, just the section I work in was hot. I’m in the basement, so this didn’t make sense at all. Hopefully the problem gets fixed soon or it’s gonna be a long, sweaty summer!

tape

Ok, so back to feet. I went to see a PT on Monday. Even though my foot was feeling better I still wanted to get to the root cause of the problem. We have a theory, so now we wait and see how I progress. She taped me up, and don’t even ask why I have tape on my right foot. This is a part of the theory but I’ll need to figure out how to articulate it in a way that makes sense because it’s still kind of confusing to me!

kinvara

Ever since I bought new running shoes last month I haven’t been able to stop thinking about the Saucony Kinvara’s. I like the Brooks Launch (that I bought last month) but they have more of a drop than what I am used to. Both shoes have a wide toe box, but I think as I start running again more regularly I will feel better in the 4mm drop which is what I am used to. I think I will be able to wear both, but I couldn’t turn down the great deal on Running Warehouse. With the coupon code FB15D they were only $41!!

nail

How in the world did I mange to break my nail like this? The broken part is so low, and it catches on stuff. I guess that’s what happens when I try to not get my nails done? Seeing this picture makes me want to go get a manicure right this second.

deer

One more thing for today. I was driving down a street in my neighborhood yesterday afternoon and saw this little family of deer walking across the road. The baby deer were moving SO slowly but luckily all the cars nearby saw them and stopped. It was definitely strange to see at that time of day!

thinking out loud

If you work in an office, what shoes do you wear to work?

Ever break a nail in a strange way?

Do you have deer or other animals living near you?

P.S. I have been noticing when I have been commenting on other blogs lately that some of my comments seem to be disappearing (I am assuming they are going to spam). There have also been some issues with my comment replies too I believe. I’ll try to figure out what’s going on this weekend but please check your spam folders for both comments and E-mail replies!

Is it weird that I have fun checking my spam comments? Sometimes they are are actually quite comical. I’m glad that your foot appears to be on the mend. About time! And hopefully you hill have a relatively low key (but still fun) rest of your summer. Your Spring was insanity!

OMG spam comments can be hysterical. And some of the emails that come to my blog email are pretty funny too.

I like a wide toe box but can’t deal with the lower heels. at least a while back I couldn’t. who knows now! I feel like our feet and needs change over the years which is part of our problem lol. I understand sort of taping the other foot even though you didn’t explain it. I feel like sometimes we compensate on the other side and hurt things further so maybe that’s what taping the other foot will help with? I hope you got my comment reply yesterday!

I did not get your reply yesterday! So strange…

I’m happy to hear that you’re foot’s been responding well, so you can get out running in this swampy weather. We have deer in my backyard too, as well as those pesky vultures that are still around. Ugh that broken nail looks like the worst! Sometimes my thumbnail will almost tear at the end of my nail bed. Thankfully some nail glue normally keeps it together for a bit.

      July 14, 2016 at 5:54 pm

I cant believe those vultures! The deer seem to be all over in Baltimore county.

I keep my dress shoes in my desk at work, unless I need a pair for a weekend thing. I learned while working in Boston I needed to wear flats to navigate the cobblestones, and I’ve kept that up because it’s easier to drive in flats than in heels.

    • [email protected] says

      July 14, 2016 at 5:55 pm

Thats a good idea! I always wear flats too. I can barely walk in heels!

Those deer are so cute! So jealous you get to see stuff like that, since obviously I don’t in DC. I’ve been wearing sneakers to work over the summer but I’m able to dress way down since the kids are out of school anyway. I do miss wearing flip flops though. I can’t wait to hear what your PT thinks is the issue!

    • [email protected] says

      July 14, 2016 at 5:56 pm

I wish I could wear flip flops but I am sure they would just make this foot issue worse. Its nice that you can wear sneakers right now!

We have all kinds of animals around us because we’re very close to being out in the country. If I go run around sunset, I regularly see deer near the trail, and sometimes pheasants. I also run by a bog, and I see muskrats all the time (they are kind of cute until you see their rat tail, then they are creepy), occasional turtles, and once I saw a mink!

    • [email protected] says

      July 14, 2016 at 5:57 pm

Wow that sounds very cool! But Im sure some of those animals can be a bit creepy at times.

I hope that you’re able to figure out what’s up with your foot! I’ve broken my nail like that and it’s the worst! I usually file the little corners as best as possible and hope it grows fast!

    • [email protected] says

      July 14, 2016 at 5:57 pm

It started to get a little longer and I was able to file it down, so that helped alot!

That is strange to see a family a deer in the middle of town. My nails always seem to be chipping and breaking lately. I have considered getting fake ones put on but I feel like that may be alot of work in the end.

Our bodies are so weird. I’ve done things like tape my shoulder and find my knee feels better!!! Love my Kinvara’s for sure!

    • [email protected] says

      July 14, 2016 at 5:59 pm

Isn’t it so crazy? We are thinking that my left foot pain was due to overuse compensating for a weaker right side. I always thought it was the other way around! Glad to hear you love your Kinvara’s!

    July 14, 2016 at 11:00 am

Growing up in CT, I had to stop short for so many deer – we have signs for them all over town!

    • [email protected] says

      July 14, 2016 at 5:59 pm

I’ve learned to just always drive slowly and look out for them because I never know when they will run across the street!

Wait, what – Kinvaras for $41?!?! I may have to buy another pair. I hope you find that the Kinvaras work well for you and I’m glad to hear most of that your foot is feeling better and you’re getting down to the root cause.
We have all sorts of animals out here! I’ve seen rabbits, eagles, geese, garter snakes, ducks, hawks, deer, and possibly even once a coyote on my runs.

My Kinvara’s came today and I am so excited to try them! I was going to not run tomorrow but now I am really tempted…you should definitely take advantage of the $41 deal!

My Doc gave me Anatomy for Runners to read as homework. Have you read it? It really helped to narrow in on some tangible things I could work on to be stronger. I had a plantar plate tear at the beginning of this year and it has been quite a journey trying to get back to running.
I always have to wear a little light hosiery with my shoes or I will get a blister- hey maybe you can body glide that area lol

    • [email protected] says

      July 14, 2016 at 6:01 pm

I did read that book! Its such a great resource! Sorry to hear about your injury though. Haha wearing body glide with my work shoes is a great idea:)

I wore nothing but Kinvaras for years but I’m not thrilled with the 7s. They just don’t seem to fit me as well for whatever reason. A similar shoe that I LOVE is the New Balance Vazee Pace. My friends at #believeintherun turned me on to them and I’ve been very happy. (FWIW their website has really comprehensive shoe reviews which I’ve found helpful). I’m alternating between the Kinvara7 and Ride 9 for short runs but I’m sticking with the Vazee’s for my long runs. The other shoes just aren’t cutting it on those 10+ mile runs.

    • [email protected] says

      July 14, 2016 at 6:03 pm

I actually tried on the 7s at CCR and liked those, but I bought the 6s because they were so cheap. I hope I like both but I have definitely heard that most people prefer the 6s. I think I also tried out the New Balance at CCR! I really liked those too. It was a tough choice because they were all so different from my Pure flows. Thanks for the insight and recommendations! I can’t wait to experiment with shoes now that I finally broke away from Brooks for the first time in like 7 years 🙂

I hate hurting my fingers because the tiniest of cuts cause the most pain and discomfort. I hate it! And I would do anything for a manicure. My nails are awful.

    • [email protected] says

      July 14, 2016 at 6:04 pm

Agreed!! In the winter my hands get so dry that I end up with tiny cuts that are really painful. I just have to keep my nails short otherwise they are just a mess.

  16. Kristy from Southern In Law says

    July 14, 2016 at 11:33 pm

Ow ow owwwww to that nail! I am constantly breaking my nails because I’m so clumsy! Hence why I rarely bother painting/doing anything with them!

    • [email protected] says

      July 15, 2016 at 5:26 pm

Same for me! Whenever I do get them done they break so easily.

OH NO! I totally get the a/c thing. A couple of weeks ago the a/c was out in our conference room and hallway completely – the a/c was still working in my office but just barely. Like, it was trying but it was still hot. I would walk to other areas of the office to refresh in the cool air every once in a while. I brought a little fan for my desk but it really just pushed the warm air around. It was a very happy day when the a/c got fixed! I hope yours is fixed soon!

Wishing you continued healing on that foot! Good to hear things are moving in the right direction. The deer here are nuts. They don’t even stop chewing let alone run away when I pass. I do hate when they all charge across busy streets with their babies. Yikes.

It’s amazing how much the deer just wander around here especially in the middle of the day.

I actually get a kick out of the spam comments–some of them are pretty entertaining. But it makes me mad when the real comments end up there.

I’m glad to hear that you are back running again. I’m hoping to try again soon, but I had pain again today–and all I’ve been doing is biking and walking. Fingers crossed.

I was so frustrated when I was still having pain after several weeks of not running. I kept feeling like it was never going to get better, but it did. I guess sometimes we need more time off than what we would expect. I think easing back in slowly has helped as well. I really hope you turn a corner soon and start to see more improvement!

I had these awesome Puma white flats I wore a lot-they got kinda nasty so I just had to throw them out. Now I’m wearing Sperrys in the summer(the lab is casual!) but am on the lookout for non-blistering, comfy flats!

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      July 21, 2016 at 5:28 am

I recently got a couple of pairs of simple, inexpensive flats from Target that work pretty well. I also like Sperrys when I am have a more casual work day! Although I think the ones I have are a little too tight in the summer. Might be time to invest in a new pair!

Just over here taking a mid-run break to wring out Just over here taking a mid-run break to wring out my shirt and hair 🥵 Seriously the amount of sweat on this run was unbelievable thanks to a dew point of 75. Have I just blocked out summers like this or is this one worse than usual? Honestly though I’d still take this over the cold!

Are you over the heat yet this year? I think it’s the humidity that’s really getting to me!

Ignorance is bliss, sometimes. (Until you’re dyi Ignorance is bliss, sometimes. (Until you’re dying 5 minutes into your run wondering when it will finally cool off again). But really, this time of year I feel like there’s no point in checking the weather. It’s either hot or really hot. #summerrunning
Another cloudy day at the beach. At least it isn’t raining and windy today. I felt the 95% humidity on this fartlek run (maybe last night’s wine and bad sleep too) so it was a tough one. But workouts are for building fitness, not proving fitness, right?! How do you move on past a hard workout?

Just a few random thoughts (and videos) from Satur Just a few random thoughts (and videos) from Saturday’s race…even though this wasn’t a goal race there are always lessons learned!

First off, my daughter woke up around 1 am the night before the race. She almost always sleeps through the night now, but out of the 2 races I did this spring she woke up before both of them. It’s like she knows I am going to leave somehow. At least this time she went back to sleep pretty quickly and so did I!

Parking was easy, but it was a long walk to and from my car! (In past years I had parked closer but there was a ton of traffic coming and going)

The start line was so crowded that I couldn’t line up in the appropriate pace area. Many runners had the same challenge so the first few miles were chaotic with some people around me walking and others trying to run faster and weaving. I was just trying not to crash into anyone.

I didn’t bring my own water and wish I did! I needed it due to the weather and the water stops really slowed me down.

My watch never lined up with the mile markers. For some miles it was far ahead and others it was far behind. But overall my watch read 10.09 so it wasn’t too far off overall.

Hard iced tea is a nice post race option. They also had hard lemonade and Heineken. (A few sips was good enough for me though)

Spring races < Fall races!

What’s the best post run beverage you’ve gotten after a race?
