Getting Back Into The Swing of Things

This week was a bit of struggle with getting back to work after a nice, long break. Luckily it was a short week! It definitely took a few days to get back into the swing of things. I took advantage of my last day off on Monday to get in a 6 mile progression run. Then I spent most of the week indoors for my workouts other than a short run on Wednesday and a cold/snowy run on Saturday.

Monday: 6 mile progression run + BBG Arms and Abs

I started using my Lumo Run a few days after Christmas. I have also been running with my new Garmin. My plan was to wear my Garmin until it died before charging the battery for the first time (it lasted a full week!) So, my Garmin died in the middle of my run. However, I knew that would happen and figured my Lumo run would be telling me my distance/splits every half mile through my headphones. (If you listen to the app while you run it gives you form suggestions and stats every half mile).

Well, less than a mile into this run my watch died AND my headphones stopped working. Usually this wouldn’t be a big deal but I was doing a progression run and really wanted to make sure my last few miles were faster than the ones before. I still came really close, but mile 6 was about 5 seconds slower than mile 5.

Progress run

Tuesday: 15 minutes spinning + BBG Legs and Cardio

It was a struggle to get this workout done at 5am after being used to taking my time in the mornings!

Lunges

Wednesday: PT exercises + 3 miles

I was way overdressed for this run- it was almost 50 degrees! The all-over-the-place weather makes it tough to figure out how to dress.

wednesday run

Thursday: 15 minutes spinning +BBG Abs and Cardio

Glad to be done with my final BBG workout of the week! These things are TOUGH!

spinning

Friday: A combo of spinning, strength training and PT exercises

I couldn’t decide what I wanted to do.  I ended up starting with some PT stuff, then I was on and off the bike while alternating with some strength training.

strength training

Saturday: PT exercises + 7 miles

So back to the headphones issue from Monday. I was a little annoyed because the headphones were brand new, although they were really cheap. When I went to use a different pair, those didn’t work either! So I guess the headphone jack for my phone is broken? I ended up running with my bluetooth in my ear so I could listen to a podcast and hear my running form cues! It wasn’t perfect (if I would adjust my hat sometimes it got disconnected) but did the trick. Maybe I need to invest in some wireless headphones…or figure out how to fix my phone….

Anyway, it was a freezing cold and snowy run. Not much else to say about it!

Saturday run

Sunday: 30 Minute Glute Workout

I’ll be sharing this tomorrow!

wall squats

While I haven’t really minded running in the cold, it’s been REALLY tough to get outside early in the early mornings when it’s dark. Once I am out there it’s fine, it’s just getting ready fast enough, putting on all the layers, etc. I guess it’s a good thing I am just running for fun right now!

Anyone else’s headphone jack on their phone stop working? Any ideas how to fix it?

How has your motivation to run in the dark/cold been lately?

Did you have a tough time getting back into the swing of things this week?

i have the new iPhone 7 so it came with an attachment to keep my older headphones working. so far so good. I’m not loving the cold weather right now but with each passing day we are closer to spring which is all I can think about lol

Hopefully I can upgrade soon! I feel like Ive had my phone so long that everything is kind of slow and falling apart.

I’m also doing the BBG workouts. I agree that they are really hard!!

They are definitely tough! Im on week 6 and now sure I’ll make it through the whole thing…

Oh no that stinks about your headphone jack! I haven’t had to deal with that. Is your phone still under a warranty at all? If so you could probably just get it replaced! When my screen cracked last year I was able to get a new (refurbished) phone for free!

Thats a good idea, but I dont think its under warranty anymore. I may be eligible for an upgrade soon though!

I’ll be curious to know how you like the Lumo run! When it’s dark and cold outside, I definitely have zero motivation. Even when it’s dark, it’s tough for me to get out there!

So far I like it, but its hard to really say because of the headphone issue. I know what I need to work on with my form so hopefully being reminded will help me to work on that stuff!

Once I got my wireless headphones, I haven’t looked back. They are seriously amazing. Full stop. Don’t you get a bit excited when you write “progression run”??!!! I would 😀

The progression run was so exciting! And I am definitely considering wireless headphones at this point.

Great week of workouts, especially that progression run! I have the motivation to run in the cold, but I just get so frustrated at all the ice nearby. Ice is worse for my motivation than cold and dark.

      January 9, 2017 at 7:38 pm

Thanks! And yes, ice is definitely the worst.

    Very strong week!
I’ve been on wireless headphones for so long, they aren’t cheap but all mine has lasted a long time. I have aftershokz mini right now and they are the most comfortable set I’ve ever owned.
I am motivated to run in the morning before work if the streets are clear of ice and snow, this cold spell needs to go away so I can run a little this week.

      January 9, 2017 at 7:39 pm

Ill have to look into those headphones! I hope you can be back outside for your runs this week!

Hopefully your phone gets fixed but my solution for running is no music…ok i guess I’m the only crazy one who doesn’t listen to music lol.

My motivation stinks right now. My early morning runs are far and few between. O think the cold has me staying in b3d and not wanting to get up.

      January 9, 2017 at 7:40 pm

I dont run with music anymore, but on the weekends I like to listen to podcasts. Also, the Lumo Run that I got gives form cues during the run to help you remember what to work on.

I’ve had that happen to me before! I re-started my phone and it worked. I’m sure you probably tried that already. I NEED music when I’m running fast, or the wheels just fall off. Nice job last week! Especially at 5am!!! GAH.

      January 9, 2017 at 7:41 pm

Actually I havent tried that! (I dont think I have restarted it since the headphone thing started being a problem) Thanks for the suggestion!

I’m definitely a week-day afternoon runner because I like to stay in bed when it’s dark. I tried getting up early for workouts a few years ago, but it didn’t stick. I like to be in bed as long as possible before getting up to get ready for work. I’m fine on the weekends because I can take my time and get out when the sun is up.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      January 9, 2017 at 7:43 pm

Its definitely easier to get out there on the weekends. I still get up early but its just tough to get motivated to get outside!

It snowed here this weekend and it has been so cold that it froze everything up, so no runs for me. Isn’t that watch awesome? I love how the battery life stays. And it doesn’t even take long when you need to charge it again. Luckily I do not have to get up early for work but I could see how that would be a struggle getting back into a routine after relaxing from the holidays.

      January 9, 2017 at 7:44 pm

I really cant believe how long the battery lasts on this watch!

Looks like you had a great week of workouts! But I do understand the struggle of getting out early in the morning with it being so cold here in MD some days this past week. Thankfully I am still on college break, so I don’t have to worry about getting back into everything yet, but soon!

The cold has made it so tough! Thats nice that you are still on break. I used to love those long winter breaks in college!

Sounds like a good week! Sorry to hear about your headphones and garmin going out on your progression run! I would have been pretty upset about it too. I too have wireless headphones and they are the best! You won’t ever use cords again!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      January 10, 2017 at 5:19 am

I need to look into wireless headphones! Cords are so annoying anyway.

You did a great job this past week! Love your home gym…it looks like you have everything you need! When it comes to bluetooth headphones, the Afterhokz are really good…they are a little pricey but so high quality!

      January 10, 2017 at 7:48 pm

I was looking into those! Its good to know you like them…I just cant decide if Im ready to spend that much on headphones! I usually buy cheap $7 ones (but they always break…)
