How I Spent My Time When I Wasn’t Working Out Last Week

Last week was a rough one. I got sick on Tuesday and it lingered until Saturday. There’s not much to share about my workouts last week. I got in one strength training session and one run. By the end of the week I decided to just spend the weekend resting and trying to be productive in other ways. So for this week’s weekly run down I’ll just talk briefly about how I spent my time when I wasn’t working out.

Not every week will be perfect when it comes to working out. This week I got sick and ended up skipping most of my runs. Instead, I tried to be productive in other ways! #fitness #workouts #life #blogging

You would think that by skipping 4 workouts you would have a ton of free time, right? It didn’t really feel that way. I easily fill up extra time with other things. Yes, even at 4:30am. I am my most productive in the mornings. So while I did sleep in a few times, I also got some other things done on the days I would usually run or strength train.

How I Spent My Time When I Wasn’t Working Out Last Week

Blogging

I got up  a Runfessions post for the first time in a year! I also started updating a few old posts and making pinable images for them. Looking back at some of the pictures I posted in 2013 makes me cringe. They are so dark you can’t even tell what they are pictures of!

Party Planning

I started doing some planning for Grayson’s birthday. We aren’t doing anything big but I want to try to have a few cute things at his party.

How I Spent My Time When I Wasn't Working Out Last Week

Race Planning

I spent LOTS of time googling races! I still haven’t decided which one(s) to do. I am still leaning towards a spring half and a fall full. It sounds like maybe Rob would want to do a full too and he has a goal to run one in every state. So we are looking at places we haven’t yet run and also where we would have someone to watch Grayson (so either visiting people or a place that is appealing enough that people would want to travel with us). Or somewhere close by that we could go there and back for just one night. My criteria is I want it to be a fast course that usually has good weather. I had really been considering putting my name in for Chicago but I feel like that wouldn’t be a good option because we might not both get in. Hmmm.

Working

Might as well catch up on some work when I have a few extra minutes! The E-mails seem like they never stop.

Meal Planning

I do this every week, but it was nice to have a little extra time to search for recipes. This is what we’re having this week:

WEEK OF 10/27/19
Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday
lasagna butternut squash soup, grilled chicken bowties and broccoli, grilled chicken pork tacos parmesan baked chicken steak salad, sweet potato fries leftovers or delivery
Resting/Sleeping

I actually took a nap for the first time in months! And once Rob was home for the weekend I felt like I could get some rest.

How I Spent My Time When I Wasn't Working Out Last Week

As nice as it was to have some extra time, I am looking forward to getting back to my workouts soon. I just really want to make sure I am back to 100% before pushing myself again. I’ll probably start off with a strength training session and see how that feels, and then go from there.

How do you spend any extra time you have when you’re not running?
When was the last time you had to take time off working out because you didn’t feel well?

I’m linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down!

You should both enter the lottery. Both of you might get it. You never know. I like to relax and catch up on shows or read. I get sick maybe once or twice a year. I hate taking time off because it is more work to plan for my days off than to just actually go to work.

I was just talking to people at work about how its harder to take off then to just go in when you’re sick. I need to be really sick to call out.

LOL, I think most runners google races when they can’t run. If you can’t run you might as well plan your next race! I’m glad you’re feeling better. I think I missed a day last year with a cold — my nose just wouldn’t quit!

Yep its like once I have more time and miss running it makes me want to sign up for races even more!

You sure did get a lot done this week. Nice to see you blogging more! We have the coffee date this Friday if you want to join in. So many races to run so little time! Glad you are feeling better

Thanks! I’ll need to see if I can come up with something for Friday. It sounds like a fun link up!

Sorry you were sick! OMG I look back to old posts and cringe at the pics as well! Not too long ago I spent time deleting a bunch of old nonsense. Ha! Have fun picking your races. Chicago is a very fun marathon but I so hear you on one getting in and not the other.

Haha yea some of the pics I just deleted and didn’t even bother trying to fix. I’m tempted to just delete some of my old posts but I don’t really care that much since its not like people are really looking at them. The only old posts that get traffic are ones that I have on Pinterest.

I was thinking about going through old posts too–but my readership has really dropped and I’m not so sure it will be worth the effort. I’m hoping that I feel so good I’ll be too busy for all that, lol!

I hope you’re feeling better and that you’re back on the road this week!

I’m only really looking at posts that have the potential to get some traffic through Pinterest. That’s where almost all my traffic comes from these days anyway.

You certainly still had a super busy week! I’m glad that you are feeling better now. A few people at my job have come down with colds over the past 2 weeks so something must be going around.

I can’t believe that Grayson is going to be 1 so soon – this year just flew by!

It definitely seems like there is something going around! I’m sure traveling and being on a plane didn’t do me any favors.

I know, time is going sooo fast!

    Hi cooties twin!
Obviously I have the rest benefit of no mini human dependent on me, so I did a lot of nothing Thursday and Saturday afternoons and all day Sunday. But yes, the work emails never ever stop. I swear they multiply.

Hopefully a little extra rest will pay off for you this weekend:)

Its really not too bad! I save my plans and recipes from each week so I can easily go back and find stuff I want to repeat when I don’t have new ideas.

AS you know, I try to get up and do something fitness-wise every morning, even if it’s just a walk. I will be doing much less running (emphasis on much less LOL) since I just had the MCM yesterday. I do have a 13.1 on Saturday, which will be my last “long” race for awhile…so I need to really go easy on the TLC so I am able to run those 13.1 miles. That said, I’ll be doing some elliptical (since it’s currently snowing…UGH) or treadmill walking this week. Maybe the #5at5 on Wednesday or Thursday, weather permitting. Hope you’re rallying back!

I’m like you, I can find a lot of things to do in my time not running! and since I haven’t really been running (bar four runs before the physio said no running…) since mid-August I’ve been doing lots of things like budgeting and re-budgeting, planning trips and searching for deals, organizing my photos (OMG this will take forever), cleaning up my blog as well, putting some effort in pinterest, figuring out a good fitness schedule, searching out recipes and then actually making them! I almost started to look for races last weekend and then thought ” do not get ahead of yourself, girl”, so nothing really on the plan for next year except Chicago.

there’s a pretty good chance you could both get into Chicago and maybe you or Rob already time qualify? Check it out to see – I don’t know why but I have it in my head that you can use times from up to two years prior to application.

      October 30, 2019 at 7:23 pm

I just looked up the qualifying times and you are right, they can be a race since the beginning of 2018. But I haven’t done a marathon since 2015 and Rob’s last one was in 2017. Also, my time is a minute slower than the qualifying time- his is like 40 minutes slower! The mens times seem really fast. Oh well. It was a good idea!

There are so many things to do beside run. I bet when you get back to running you are going to feel so accomplished!

Oh, any free time always fills up so quickly with something else. I never feel like there is enough time for all the tings I want to do 😉

But I do a lot of the same things that you do, when I have time (and I don’t have a kid running around!): blogging, meal planning (researching new recipes!), baking, reading, knitting,… there is always stuff to do.

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
