Route 66 Marathon Training Week 3

Believe it or not, I am on day 19 of being sick. It is feeling like the slowest recovery process ever- the first week was a terribly sore throat, then it was a week of coughing, and now it’s all head congestion/sneezing. Physically, I feel much better than I did the first week. I have been able to run, although early last week my breathing was still feeling harder than usual (plus it was hot and humid early last week). By the end of the week my paces were getting back to normal, I just had to run with tissues and occasionally stop to cough. Regardless, I am happy that I got in my first full week of marathon training! My coach dialed down the intensity for this week, because there was really no way I could have done speed work on Tuesday.

weekly workout recap

Monday: 4 miles easy, core/hip exercises

monday

I noticed that my vivofit measured 4.32 miles while my Forerunner measure 4 miles…after sharing this on instagram I learned that others have noticed this as well, but that we should generally trust the Forerunner which has GPS capabilities.

Tuesday: 4 miles easy

tuesday
this deer was just hanging out in the middle of the street!

Wednesday: Strength training

wednesday
I’ve been enjoying choosing random pandora stations to listen to while I strength train. This week was “90s pop”

Thursday: 4 miles easy, core and hip exercises

Friday: 5 miles with 3 at goal marathon pace

friday

Saturday: 13 miles…this was my longest run living in my new house and so I explored some different routes which turned out to be very hilly! This is good because my race has hills, but comparing the elevation charts, I think these hills were more than I will have to worry about on race day.

Sunday: Rest!

I’ve really been focusing on resting more than ever lately to try to get over this cold. I had a really busy week at work last week, so I tried to use the time I wasn’t working or running to relax. This meant blogging was put on hold. I’m not sure what this week will bring, but I am planning to be around more than last week!

Total miles: 30 (My first time hitting 30 miles this year!)

How were your workouts last week?

Have you ever had a cold that just wouldn’t go away?

Do you have a favorite Pandora station to listen to while you work out?

Feel better soon! I found that running on more hilly terrain to train this summer in CT versus in the cut really increased my stamina so hopefully it will be for the best!

Thanks! Yes, I definitely think there are alot of benefits to running hills!

I listen to that Pandora station too! (at least I think it’s that 90’s one, I am sure there are a bunch)…I am sorry you still don’t feel well but I feel like everyone I know (including myself and my son) had lingering viruses/colds over the last few weeks. Took me a little over two weeks to return to normal with my stomach bug. Awful! I hope you feel better this week.

Had no idea you’ve been sick this whole time still, totally sucks but at this point it can only get better! I need to check out that 90s pop station I think 🙂 feel better and congrats on the 30 miles!

It has to just get better from here, right? 🙂 I feel like I am so used to being sick I’m gonna feel great when I am back to normal!

WOW! 30 miles and with a cold! You will be unstoppable when that cold totally passes! Sounds like you found a great training path in your neighborhood- that is nice! Keep up the good work and rest up! Happy Monday!

I’m so sorry that you are still recovering! So annoying, but at least, as you said, you were still able to train. And hey, there is nothing wrong with being little overtrained for hills, right? That way you can just scoff at everyone on marathon day.

    • [email protected] says

      August 24, 2015 at 4:07 pm

That’s what I figure:) I would rather be overtrained for the hills, for sure!

I’m sorry you’re still feeling under the weather! Hopefully this week will bring some relief for you. I also took a blogging break last week due to feeling down about being injured. I did a few workouts including a great first time on the ARC Trainer, but it was nothing like a good run!

    • [email protected] says

      August 24, 2015 at 4:08 pm

I remember it was so hard to blog when I was injured. How do you write for a running blog when you aren’t running? But readers like to know what’s going on, so glad you gave an update today:)

  7. Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says

    August 24, 2015 at 7:57 am

Looks like you are getting some good training in despite being sick! Maybe its allergies?

    • [email protected] says

      August 24, 2015 at 4:10 pm

I was wondering that, but I definitely had more of a bug when it first hit me 2 weeks ago. So I keep assuming my current head congestion is from that, but who knows- maybe its both?

  8. Marcia says

    August 24, 2015 at 8:25 am

Oh man I’m so sorry that bug as hung on so long. The last thing you need during marathon training. Looks like a solid week, nevertheless.

      August 24, 2015 at 4:10 pm

I hope you feel better soon! Great week of training despite not feeling your best! I definitely think it’s good to be overprepared for race day hills – then you’ll just breeze right over them.

You had a strong week of training even with your cold. It’s time for that nasty thing to go away already! I’ve run the Route 66 half marathon twice (once in frigid temps). It is hillier than it appears, but you do get some flat portions. The whole is even hillier. Running in your neighborhood will be great training. That’s some hill in your pic! Thanks for linking up with us today!

      August 24, 2015 at 4:12 pm

That is good to know! I did read some race reviews that talked about the hills. I do think those elevation maps can be deceiving, so I would rather be over-prepared for the hills!

I had a lingering cold earlier this summer… I couldn’t believe it since the weather was finally getting warmer and I ended up with a cold for about a month. I found saline nasal washes pretty helpful! I hope you start feeling better soon – and even being under the weather you had a great week of training!! Have a fabulous Monday!

Sorry to hear you are still feeling blah at times. I’m finally feeling better after being congested for the longest time it felt Good job still getting your runs in. That’s funny you saw a deer along your run and were quick enough to take a pic before he ran away. Do you live in the country?

    • [email protected] says

      August 24, 2015 at 4:14 pm

Haha I don’t live in the country but there are alot of wooded areas around here so the deer wander around in the early morning. This one was literally just standing in the middle of the street. Luckily it wasn’t a busy road!

Congrats on 30 miles!! My weekly mileage has definitely suffered the past couple weeks but it’s all about doing what we can with our circumstances:)

Mine started out as a terribly sore throat and I am just glad I am past that, because my whole body was achy, I was exhausted, and I missed almost a week of running. I hope that we both get over these colds soon!!

Day 19 oh wow, I’m so sorry 🙁 But hey your workouts didn’t show it! 30 Miles that is awesome! I do hope though you get to feeling more like yourself this week. I bet it would be fun to find new routes near your house. I’m not a fan of hills at all BUT they are great workouts and you use different muscles which gives other muscles a break every once in awhile! That logic sounds good anyway! Thanks Lisa for linking up with us this week! I do hope you’ll join us again!

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
