Running Out Of Summer

We finally got some cooler weather this week! That along with the darker mornings makes it seem like we are really running out of summer now. Also, when the title of this post came to mind it reminded me of when my blog was called “Running Out Of Wine”. It’s been two years since I changed my name! Sometimes I miss it but I was really in the mood for a change and I had felt like I outgrew that name at the time. Anyway…

Running Out Of Summer

This week of workouts wasn’t anything special. I kept up with my routine and added in a farlek run on Wednesday. It was really similar to the fartlek runs I did last fall when I was pregnant. One of them popped up on my TimeHop this week. (Why am I being so nostalgic in this post?) My run this week was like 2 minutes/mile faster than last year, but probably similar effort! It made me realize how far I’ve come since returning to running postpartum and also how much all that running probably helped with my comeback.

Weekly Run Down

Monday: Rest Day

Tuesday: Strength Training

Wednesday: 6 mile Fartlek Run and 20 minute walk

I did a warm up for 8 minutes,  then 2/3/4/5/4/3/2 minutes hard with 1 minute recovery intervals in between each set, and ended with a cool don that got me to 6 miles.

fartlek run

Thursday: Strength Training and 30 minute walk

Friday: 3 stroller miles

It was 50 degrees out and I had no idea how to dress myself (or Grayson)! I felt like he would get chilly easily especially since I was going to block him from the sun so I had him in his warm pajamas, a fleece, and a blanket. I was in shorts and a long sleeved t-shirt.

bundled up

Saturday: 8 mile run

This was done bright and early once again. It was kind of tough to get going at first but it’s always rewarding to see the sun rise. (Even though runs at this time make it really difficult to take pictures…)

Sat 8 miles

Sunday: 4 mile stroller run

There are some things I love about summer running and I always feel a little sad when it ends. But I also really love fall running, so this is such a great time of year. I’m usually feeling done with the heat and humidity and can really appreciate the cooler temps. Unfortunately here we usually bounce around quite a bit so it never really stays at this perfect temperature for long before suddenly jumping to winter weather.

Treadmill Update

On another note our treadmill had been making noise again starting a few months ago. We haven’t really been using it so it was one of those things we kept forgetting about. It’s still under warranty so we had put in a request for support. After not getting a response, I reached out to Nordic Track on instagram. They responded right away and I was able to be in communication over E-mail with their support person. A tech came out on Monday and got it fixed pretty quickly. So that’s good news! It’s nice to know that we have the treadmill as an option. I didn’t want to run on it when it was making such weird noises.

Non-Running Updates

This was a busy week outside of working out. We had Grayson’s 9 month pediatrician appointment on Thursday. It went great but he had some shots and was a bit cranky for a day or two after that (I also think his top teeth are getting ready to come in). We had another appointment for him on Friday so it felt like those two days were just a little hectic.

5 days vs 9 months
5 Days Old and 9 Months Old!

On Saturday we went out to lunch and I got a beer that I was craving after finishing my run earlier that morning. We like taking Grayson out to eat once in a while just to have him practice being out in public lol. He doesn’t get out much so it’s good for all of us. He is in this phase where he has discovered new (loud) noises that he can make which gets interesting when we are in public.

lunch Saturday

On Sunday we met my parents at a nearby farm that had some fall activities. Except it didn’t feel like fall! We went on a hayride, saw some animals and pumpkins, and ate some food in the shade.

It’s definitely feeling like summer is on it’s way out, but still trying to hang around juuuust a little longer!

How were your workouts last week?
Are you feeling like summer is ending?
Do you struggle with figuring out what to wear this time of year?
Do you find that some companies are more responsive on Instagram/Facebook than reaching out to them directly?

Looks like Grayson is ready to join you with that beer! We’re having cooler, less humid nights but it warms right up to high 80’s during the day. I’m noticing minimal color changes but leaves are falling. Not sure what’s up with that. That fartlek workout looks fun!

I haven’t noticed the leaves around here. I think they are all still mostly green and on the trees.
That fartlek workout is one of my favorites. I’ve been doing it for years!

No it sure did not feel like fall this weekend at all! It is so hard to figure out what to wear for non running activities. I will be in shorts and tanks until we are in the low 50’s.

I made the mistake of wearing jeans yesterday to the farm. Not sure what I was thinking!

The photo of Grayson eyeing your beer is so funny! Last week it seemed like we had all 4 seasons in one week. One day it was 45 degrees when I drove to work and by the time I came home after work it was in the 80s. Today is going to feel more like summer even though it’s officially Fall – sigh 🙁

The weather last week was definitely weird! And I am still wearing summer clothes to work. Happy fall lol.

Awww, Grayson is so adorable! I remember those phases – baby in carrier was a great phase for dinner because they would just sleep through it. Then they get to be a bit bigger and want to stay awake and grab for everything on the table! And then we stopped going out to dinner for awhile 🙂 And now they are teenagers and I can just leave them at home. LOL!!! Great workouts this week! I know what you mean about 50 degrees. It seems chilly but not really!

It’s definitely interesting taking him out to meals right now! Especially because he wants to eat on his own but is still learning how to do that. And it’s annoying to bring a placement or something for him to eat off of.

It’s no secret I love summer, but I do appreciate the change of seasons. I agree, it’s tough to get the layers right during the transition between seasons. I wore a tank with capri’s (and arm warmers) this morning, and actually felt perfect. My shoulders were a bit chilly, but overall things felt comfortable in the low-50’s temps.

I wore arm warmers over the weekend and they worked out really well! I thought I would need to take them off but ended up leaving them on for the entire run.

I had to laugh at that photo of Grayson and the beer…have you seen that drunk baby meme? LOL.. It’s cute.

I love running in the fall. It just feels so much easier. I don’t like knowing that winter is around the corner, tho!

I know, that’s the only thing I don’t like about fall is knowing winter is not far behind!

Just over here taking a mid-run break to wring out Just over here taking a mid-run break to wring out my shirt and hair 🥵 Seriously the amount of sweat on this run was unbelievable thanks to a dew point of 75. Have I just blocked out summers like this or is this one worse than usual? Honestly though I’d still take this over the cold!

Are you over the heat yet this year? I think it’s the humidity that’s really getting to me!

Ignorance is bliss, sometimes. (Until you’re dyi Ignorance is bliss, sometimes. (Until you’re dying 5 minutes into your run wondering when it will finally cool off again). But really, this time of year I feel like there’s no point in checking the weather. It’s either hot or really hot. #summerrunning
Another cloudy day at the beach. At least it isn’t raining and windy today. I felt the 95% humidity on this fartlek run (maybe last night’s wine and bad sleep too) so it was a tough one. But workouts are for building fitness, not proving fitness, right?! How do you move on past a hard workout?

Just a few random thoughts (and videos) from Satur Just a few random thoughts (and videos) from Saturday’s race…even though this wasn’t a goal race there are always lessons learned!

First off, my daughter woke up around 1 am the night before the race. She almost always sleeps through the night now, but out of the 2 races I did this spring she woke up before both of them. It’s like she knows I am going to leave somehow. At least this time she went back to sleep pretty quickly and so did I!

Parking was easy, but it was a long walk to and from my car! (In past years I had parked closer but there was a ton of traffic coming and going)

The start line was so crowded that I couldn’t line up in the appropriate pace area. Many runners had the same challenge so the first few miles were chaotic with some people around me walking and others trying to run faster and weaving. I was just trying not to crash into anyone.

I didn’t bring my own water and wish I did! I needed it due to the weather and the water stops really slowed me down.

My watch never lined up with the mile markers. For some miles it was far ahead and others it was far behind. But overall my watch read 10.09 so it wasn’t too far off overall.

Hard iced tea is a nice post race option. They also had hard lemonade and Heineken. (A few sips was good enough for me though)

Spring races < Fall races!

What’s the best post run beverage you’ve gotten after a race?
