The Heat Is On

It seems like the chilly weather has finally left for good and over the past week it’s been warm and humid. Just what we would expect from June weather! It’s been challenging to acclimate especially when it really hasn’t been consistently warm. But it will only get warmer from here on out. The heat is on!

It seems like the chilly weather has finally left for good this year and over the past week it's been warm and humid. Just what we would expect from June weather! It's been challenging to acclimate especially when it really hasn't been consistently warm. But it will only get warmer from here on out. The heat is on!

Weekly Run Down: The Heat Is On

  • Monday: 4 Miles + Core
  • Tuesday: 6 Miles with 6 x 30 Second Strides
  • Wednesday: Strength Training + 3.5 Miles
  • Thursday: Rest Day
  • Friday: Strength Training + 3.3 Miles
  • Saturday: 9 Miles
  • Sunday: 3.7 Miles

Monday: 4 Miles + Core

This was a weird week with a day off on Monday. We decided to go to the park for a stroller run and to let Grayson play on the playground before it got too crowded. He has a really hard time in the stroller there now because he knows the playground is right there. We made it two miles before we stopped and let him play. I ran 2 more miles on my own.

park run

Tuesday: 6 Miles with 6 x 30 Second Strides

After spending alot of time outside on Monday, my allergies were terrible on Tuesday morning. Instead of doing a workout I just ran easy and added on some strides at the end. I got home and couldn’t stop sneezing!

tuesday run with strides

Wednesday: Strength Training + 3.5 Miles

I started a new phase of strength training this week and I didn’t get to do the first day until Wednesday. After lifting I got outside for 3.5 miles to celebrate Global Running Day!

global running day

Thursday: Rest Day

Took my rest day on Thursday so I could lift Wednesday and Friday. I usually take my rest day on Friday, so this just added to the confusion of a short week!

Friday: Strength Training + 3.3 Miles

As I was lifting in my basement I could feel how humid it was, even while inside in the AC. My phone said 68 degrees and 99% humidity. The heat is on for sure! And it will just keep getting warmer.

friday hot run

Saturday: 9 Miles

This run felt so hard. I took a hilly route, so that was part of the reason. It was also pretty warm and I’m still a bit congested. Another factor may have been that I lifted and ran the day before. But I got it done and finished with a smile on my face! (Except for when I was dodging cicadas. I definitely wasn’t smiling through that.)

long run

Sunday: 3.7 Miles

It was even warmer than Saturday (mid 70s when we started and above 80 when we finished) and there were even more cicadas. One even landed on my hand when I was holding my phone after taking this picture!

sunday runday

It may not even “officially” be summer yet but the heat is on. I’ll take it over cold or rainy weather. Besides, I’ll need to get acclimated at some point!

I would probably freak out about the cicada landing on my hand! So glad we don’t get them.

I think you did a great job with your workouts this week & ending a 9 mile run in this heat with a smile is awesome. Really glad I chose to do my longer run on Tuesday!

It was pretty creepy but I have a feeling there will be many more cicada encounters this month! That was a smart plan to do your longer run early in the week!

After dealing with the weather this weekend, it’s crazy to think how cold and rainy it was over Memorial Day weekend, lol.

Sorry to hear about your allergies earlier this week 🙁 I think all of the rain must have made the pollen worse. I had bad allergies days from Monday-Wednesday but then it got better.

I don’t know what I’m going to do about these allergies! After being outside alot this weekend they’re awful again. This is by far the worst I’ve ever had them!

The heat is definitely on! Between that and the cicadas ugh. When they come back next time Grayson will be in College!! Looks like you got some good runs in this week. I did lower body Friday and was still feeling those dead lifts today! It’s funny how sometimes that happens and sometimes nothing.

Crazy to think that Grayson will be in college next time they come out! I’m glad we won’t have to deal with them for 17 more years.

    Dodging cicadas! Yikes.

Man the warm temps came on strong this week! It felt more like August than early June.
Sorry the allergies are still annoying! You’re so dedicated with your strength training!

It really did get super hot quickly this week! I’ve learned the hard way that I need to keep up with strength training or my body falls apart.

Mondays are my day off, so holidays on Monday don’t mess me up too much. I even went to CF that day, which is my normal CF day, lol.

The heat is messing me up, tho…I haven’t had time to acclimate since it’s been pretty cool up until now. We really need rain, but I’m not minding that we aren’t getting any, lol!

I heard that if we have dry weather that the cicadas will dye off faster, so that’s what I’m hoping for!

    June 6, 2021 at 4:34 pm

Yes the heat is on. I had to shorten my run from 10 to 8 and barely made it through that. Good for you on getting runs done on both days!!

      June 6, 2021 at 8:03 pm

It’s so tough getting in long runs when its hot, especially early in the year when you’re not acclimated!

  7. Jenny says

    June 6, 2021 at 5:52 pm

So let me get this straight- for your nine-miler, it was warm, hilly, you lifted the day before, were congested, and there were cicadas??? Sounds perfect (ha ha.)
It’s funny hearing everyone talk about the weather up north- Florida is either super hot, or slightly less hot. We don’t have all these variations!
Hope you have a good week with no allergies and plenty of heat acclimation!

      June 6, 2021 at 8:04 pm

When you put it that way, it was a perfect long run- lol. I think up here the heat came on really quickly and none of us were ready for it!

Great runs last week and I don’t blame Grayson for not wanting to run past the playground without stopping!

It sounds like your cicadas are a couple of weeks behind ours and ours were a few weeks behind Arlington and even Reston’s. We were just out back with Pablo and I didn’t even bother to count how many landed on me.

      June 6, 2021 at 8:06 pm

I really hope they don’t get much worse here! It’s weird how some areas around here have them alot worse than others.

My week was all jacked up with the holiday, even though I ran on Monday (which is typical of my Mondays anyways). We got pretty lucky with the weather here…it was warm (and sunny most days), but the humidity wasn’t noticeable until the weekend. Like you said, I’ll gladly take this over the snow, ice ,and freezing wind of winter.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      June 6, 2021 at 8:08 pm

It was definitely a weird week. We started to get the humidity on Wednesday and I have a feeling it will be here for good now!

    June 6, 2021 at 7:15 pm

Yeah, I think I can safely put my winter coat away now. Good for you for getting through your long run. It was brutal out there — or at least felt that was in contrast to last weekend.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      June 6, 2021 at 8:08 pm

I definitely think this weekend felt so hard for running because it got hot so quickly. After the cool weather last weekend, we really didn’t have a chance to acclimate!

I always feel disoriented after a long weekend! Being off from work all of last week made it even harder.

I would have completely freaked out if a cicada had landed on me – I’m such a bug-phobe! It’s a good thing that you’re coming to the end and then they’ll go away for a very long time.

I hope you get a break from your allergies soon!

      June 7, 2021 at 4:21 am

I bet it was really hard going back to work after so much time off! I heard the cicadas might be around until early July. I hope that’s not true!

I’m glad we don’t have to deal with the cicadas here, they sound unpleasant. But I am loving the heat.

      June 7, 2021 at 7:39 pm

I prefer the heat to the cold, but its been really tough to run in it, especially since I’m not used to it yet!

    June 8, 2021 at 8:46 am

The cicadas are freaking me out for real! I don’t know how you’re doing it!

Yeah, it’s summer here, even if it’s not. It’s in the mid to high 70s at 6 in the morning, and 99% humidity all the time. So gross.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      June 9, 2021 at 7:39 pm

I don’t know how much longer I can take the cicadas! Just when I get used to them, they get worse. Ugh.

I love having a short week. I work and feel better when I have 4 work days. The heat is on here too. We’ve had a few humid days and it has made the run even more difficult.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      June 9, 2021 at 7:40 pm

A 4 day workweek is really nice! Yea, the heat really came out of nowhere this past week, along with the humidity.

Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 mile MP/1 mile easy. I took a few hours of PTO in the morning to do this on the trail because I knew wouldn’t be able to do it this weekend. This was my first time on the trail since my marathon last November. It was nice to be back there and the perfect place to do this kind of long run. It was the kind of run where you start thinking “ok cool I just did a tough MP workout” but then you remember you actually need to run 26 miles in a row at that pace. Luckily there’s still 9 more weeks of training…although that doesn’t really sound like that much!
41 miles for the week and got in 2 strength sessions. Taking it easy this weekend other than chasing the kids around for all their activities! #run #marathontraining #longrun
It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It is a little frustrating to have to plan more time for an easy run. But it’s definitely worth it to recover quicker and feel better on workout days! #run #marathongtraining #easyrun
You know marathon training is starting to get real You know marathon training is starting to get real when you start losing track of what training week it is. I had to check my calendar but this was week 6, so 10 weeks to go!

I ran the Charles Street 12 last weekend so this week was all about easy miles and recovering from the race. That went well until I went and ran all the hills yesterday followed by walking around a maze and fun park for 5 hours. I got in some strength and mobility this morning and now I’m back to focusing on recovery!

If you’re training for a race how many weeks do you have left?

15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 9 15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 91% humidity 🫠 Pretty sure that was harder than my race last weekend, but got it done. Now off to my second workout of the day- taking the kids to an outdoor fun park. RIP to my legs.
What are you up to this weekend?
