Weekend Highlights: Boston, Cape Cod, and RRCA Coaching Course

I feel like its been forever since I sat down to blog! It’s been a crazy week but so amazing! Of course I want to talk in detail about the RRCA Coaching Certification Course at some point, but there is just too much in my head right now to make any sense of it and form a coherent blog post. Instead, I thought I would share some highlights from the long weekend!

I left for Boston on Wednesday evening, and Alli (the one who just got engaged!) was kind enough to pick me up at the airport. After a few glasses of wine at the airport bar and on the plane, I was feeling good by the time I arrived. We hung out chatting for a bit (with some more wine of course) before calling it a night.

The next morning I went for a run around Boston. Alli gave me a loop which worked out to be just under 6 miles, which took me along the Charles River. She went to some crazy workout class called Barry’s Bootcamp…luckily we don’t have it in Baltimore, it sounds super tough!

We packed up our stuff and hit the road for Cape Cod. When we arrived it was cloudy and kind of rainy. We decided it was a perfect day to go to the Cape Cod Brewery!

We went with her dad and each sampled 5 of their craft beers. We chose 3 to take home in growlers, plus we got to take our tasting glasses as a souvenir.

That night Alli was in charge of cooking. She made this amazing dish which will be recreated at least once a month in my kitchen.

Of course there was lots of wine every night, too.

cape cod

On Friday morning I went out for a run around the cape. I didn’t really know where I was going but found a nice 7/8ish mile loop. My garmin was dead which always seems to happen on days when I would benefit from running without it. We spent most of the day at the beach with some friends who were also visiting from New York. We ended up going to the Cape Cod Brewery again that afternoon:)

I got out for a quick 3ish miles before the RRCA training on Saturday.

I thought the training was great- there were many things that I knew/had read already but I thought they did a good job of putting it all together. I also feel more comfortable knowing WHY I include certain workouts in training plans in a specific order…but more on that later. I also got to meet Michele!

Saturday and Sunday were long and exhausting but I still got to hang out for a while on Saturday evening. After the course on Sunday we drove back to Boston and I flew back to Baltimore on Monday morning.

And as you may already know, I passed the RRCA Coaching Exam on Monday! I got my E-mail Tuesday morning that I am a certified coach! Woohoo!

I am still adjusting to being back, and as I complained about after coming back from Florida last month I get really bad “vacation hangovers” <— Thanks Suzlyfe for the terminology. However, I have already been plotting my plans for Philly training and hope to share some of that with you later this week.

What do you want to know about the RRCA Coaching Certification Course?

It was so nice to know I’d have a friend there already! Our drive back Sunday night was not fun, it took 6 hours and I totally had a vacation hangover, plus an information overload hangover! I am not even close to making my philly training plan but I’ll definitely be approaching it with key concepts we learned.

Love all the pictures! And congrats to your friend who got engaged!

6 hours in the car would be the last thing I’d want to do after class on Sunday! Glad you made it back. I have a lot of thoughts about training now but I need to find a way to put them together- and mostly I am thinking about how I am going to get ready to start training (like by taking it easy for a while!)

I want you to teach me all of the material so that I can be certified. It is impossible to get into those programs!

I know, they fill up so fast! I figured I had to be willing to travel if I wanted to do it. Also, make sure you’re on the E-mail list so you get notified as soon as they open up. Everyone at the course said they got the E-mail and signed up within a few hours.

So glad you got to enjoy a nice new england weekend with friends and learned all about coaching. I think it would be interesting to learn for myself, even if I didn’t become a coach for others. I feel you on the vacation hangovers. I’m just getting back into the swing of things even though I’ve been at the boat for 2 weeks post-europe.

That’s what I figured- even if I don’t do a ton of coaching either way I knew I would benefit from the information!

Fall is pretty good too but there’s nothing like Fall is pretty good too but there’s nothing like seeing the sunrise on a morning run! As an early morning riser I would be fine with a 4am sunrise but I know that’s not for everyone so I will just enjoy the 2 months of the year when the sun is up (almost) as early as me. #morningrunner #sunriserun
Let them be your reason, not your excuse. I coul Let them be your reason, not your excuse.

I could sit here and tell you how hard it is to train with 2 young kids. How I rarely get a full night’s sleep anymore. How they got me sick the week before my race. How my SI joint just isn’t the same since my pregnancies. But that wouldn’t be fair, because I need to listen to my own advice that I give them about how to keep working hard and that there will always be obstacles to overcome.

After my race on Sunday I was thinking about how my Kindergartner has been working for a special award all year long. Many times he has told me he just wants to give up, because he works so hard for months at a time and still hasn’t earned it. I keep telling him that if he keeps working hard he will earn it, but what’s most important is that he gives his best each and every day. All those good days add up and even if he doesn’t earn the award, it will mean he had a great year.

Don’t I need to take my own advice and remember that all the good training days add up, even if I don’t get the outcome I want on race day? Before my race he kept telling me to do my best, and that he would give me a prize (artwork) even if I don’t win. So maybe all the lessons I am teaching him are starting to pay off? #motherrunner #halfmarathon #frederickrunfest
I can pretty much see the humidity as I look back I can pretty much see the humidity as I look back on these videos. After a few days to process my race I am feeling better about how it went and starting to focus on what’s next. I guess it’s officially time to acclimate to the heat and humidity because it’s not getting cooler any time soon! My full recap is up at milebymileblog.com

Have you acclimated to the warmer weather yet?
