Weekly Wrap: Bridal Shower Weekend and Half-Marathon Ready

A few weeks ago I started thinking about maybe signing up for a half-marathon in May. It would be two weeks from this past weekend, so I didn’t want to do a long run or hard workout next weekend. However, I haven’t really been doing long runs and I figured I would feel better about it if I got in a 10 miler before the race. I also wanted to make sure I was incorporating hills because the race I am eyeing is very hilly. So on Saturday I ran my first double-digit run in months, and included a workout which made the run fly by.

Overall this was a good week. Fitting in the long run was a little tricky because I had to leave for the train station around 7:30 to go to New York for my friend’s baby shower. I ended up waking up before my alarm and had plenty of time to get the run in. Although I was really tired later in the day!

shower

Monday: 4 miles easy, core and hip exercises

monday

Tuesday: AM: Strength Workout PM: Yoga for hips, back, and hamstrings

Wednesday: 6.1 with 6 hill repeats

hills

Thursday: 4.1 miles easy, first 4 tracks of CXWORXS

Friday: 3 miles easy, glute workout

Saturday: 10 miles with modified negative split workout: 1 mile warm up 3 x 3 miles progression

saturday

Sunday: Rest

Total: 27.2 miles

Walked: 18.25     Push-ups: 3 days

Yearly Total: 755/2016

On Sunday the Long Island Marathon was going on within blocks of where I was staying. I had considered running the half a couple of months ago but then decided to get a ride back to MD with my friend who was leaving around 9. I knew Meredith was running so when I realized how close I would be to the  course I thought I could maybe walk over and see part of the race. However, I realized I wouldn’t be able to get picked up to go home because of all the road closures, so I had to get out of that area by 7am.

We also had to account for the 5 Borough Bike Tour going on around NYC, plus the rain. Luckily we made it back with no issues! I got to hang out with my friend’s baby in the back seat and I am sure he wouldn’t have been as happy with a much longer ride.

baby

Oh, but Meredith set a PR in her half! Congrats again!

Now I am thinking I kind of want to do that race next year. I guess I have plenty of time to decide!

How were your workouts last week?

When was the last time you spectated a race?

Have you ever been detoured from driving somewhere because of a race?

aw thank you 🙂 I wish you could have been there! I was totally going to look for you in the crowds had you been on the sidelines watching at some point. And yes, I hope you can run it next year! I assume I will to make it 5 years in a row — I just hope it is weather like yesterday because otherwise, with sun and heat, it’s kinda brutal. I am so glad you got in a double digit run, I know how good that feels!

I was really worried for you that it was going to start pouring so I am glad it worked out so well!

I like the idea of negative splits workouts – it really takes my mind off of crunching numbers too much, just running a mile faster than the one before! Great job on your first double digit long run. Glad you had fun at the bridal shower!

Great job on your training, especially getting that double digit run in! That workout sounds fin and would definitely make the miles pass by quickly. I bet the Long Island Half would be a fun race! Too bad you couldn’t see Meredith this year, road closures around a race (while necessary) can be so frustrating to navigate around.

Yep, and we were literally stuck right in the middle of the course! But now I know how convenient it would be to run that race next year.

How long does it take you to get to NYC on the train?

It was about 2 1/2 hours from Baltimore to NYC, and then I took the Long Island Railroad to the town where the shower was (about 50 minutes).

I actually don’t think I’ve ever spectated a race! I’m thinking about doing it for the MCM this year, especially if I sign up to run the 10K. My workouts last week were good, minus my nagging PF in my right foot. So annoying!

      May 2, 2016 at 7:13 pm

I was going to spectate MCM last year but it was pouring rain! I give so much credit to the volunteers who are out there in the crappy weather.

Such a cutie, and looks like an awesome weekend! The only race I’ve spectated is the NYC Marathon (and I guess the Disney marathon since I was heading to the park while the runners were still on the road…)

There was some sort of activity going on in town two weekends ago. We weren’t detoured, but on my errands and going home, I seemed to hit police directing traffic at every intersection until I got far enough south. I have no idea what was going on.

What a weekend! Way to go on squeezing that run in!

Just last weekend we were detoured because of a race we forgot all about. We went to come home after church but as we live on the same street as a huge national park, it was all closed off with people running a fun run/half marathon and we had to park up the street and walk home, haha! 😛

After our race this weekend, we all got in the car and tried to get back to where we were staying. Everywhere we turned it was road closures. We did make it out but sat quite a while.
Great job on your negative split run. I’ve been trying to do this some. It does take some planning on my part. I try and not look at my watch all the time. Thanks Lisa for linking up!

Oh no! Thats annoying about sitting in the car after the race. That happened to me after a half marathon. There was a full going on too and the road I needed to take was blocked off so it took forever to get home.

The long runs definitely do take so much out of you! I haven’t done more than 10 since last fall and I know when I do I will need to plan to just relax the rest of the day.

  18. HoHo Runs says

    May 2, 2016 at 7:45 pm

Hmm…I haven’t spectated at a run. I have volunteered at a couple of 5ks (while out with a sprained ankle) so maybe that counts? It’s always difficult to leave a race if you’ve done the half and the roads are stilled closed for the full. I end up driving all over the place. Great job on the 10 miler. Oh, that baby is adorable. Thanks for linking with us Lisa!

I have definitely been stuck trying to leave a race because of a full marathon going on before! And I definitely think volunteering counts as spectating a race!

Nice week, Lisa! Way to get in that long run before leaving. Did you decide on a half to do? I’ve never spectated a race but I can imagine it would be really fun. I’d be one of those people to set up a beer stand and throw a party on the side of the street.

I always think that the people spectating the Baltimore Marathon look like they are having so much fun! I am thinking about running the Maryland half in 2 weeks, but its really hilly so I won’t be trying to PR. I am also sort of waiting to see how the forecast looks:)

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
