Winter And The Holiday Season Already? (TOL #24)

First of all, congrats to Michele who is the winner of my Bondi Band giveaway! I will be sending you an E-mail so I can get you your bondi-band!

Now, time for some thinking out loud. I really don’t know how I feel about it practically becoming winter overnight. Between the time change and the cold front that came through, I feel like we just closed the door on any sort of fall that we were having. Plus, Halloween is over and it’s November which means that we are going to be faced with the “holiday season” from now until January 1st. Most of what I have been thinking about has to do with this theme, since that’s what’s been on my mind this week….

I had such a hard time adjusting to the time change. It didn’t really affect me over the weekend because I didn’t have much to do on Sunday, but I was ready for bed at 8pm on Sunday night. I think I made it until 8:30, but I bet you can guess what happened Monday morning…Yep, 4 am I was wide awake. I got up at 4:20 and read blogs before I went running. A productive start to the week, I guess?

The good thing about daylight savings time is that it gets light out earlier in the morning. I have been enjoying the sunrises again.

sunrise

However, I don’t enjoy it getting dark at 5:30pm. On Tuesday I went to yoga and it was already starting to get dark on my walk there at 5:15. I started wondering what I am going to do in the winter. My yoga studio is about a mile away and there is no parking nearby.  I started going in March so I never really had to deal with walking there in the winter, but I have a feeling I am going to be way less motivated to walk there in the cold and dark.

sunset

At least its boot season so I can go back to wearing my compression socks all the time!

boots

I’m having a really hard time figuring out what to wear for my morning runs. Some days 45 degrees feels colder than others, depending on the wind. And I feel like my weather app lies about the wind sometimes. I am usually happy in shorts and a long sleeve shirt, and compression socks. I never know when to transition to capris which means that I usually just wear shorts until its too cold and I need to wear tights. I’m trying to start thinking about what I might want to wear for the marathon, but I have no idea how the weather will be. Last time I ran Philly it was in the 50s and I probably dressed way too warm.

marathon

On Tuesday the wether was great for running – high 40s and no wind. I think that played a huge part in how good I felt on my run. I was planning to do a steady state run around 7:55-8:15 pace as I have done the past 2 weeks, but it ended up being quite a bit faster. I got home and was all like “I love running!!” and Rob looked at me like I was crazy.

perfect run

I was in target yesterday and the rumors are true- they have their Christmas section up. Others have said this and I didn’t really want to believe it.

target

I guess since its the holiday season I need to get my hands on one of those red Starbucks cups!

Do you feel like its suddenly winter/the holiday season?

What temperature is your limit for running in shorts?

My first giveaway won, woohoo! I’m not feeling like its winter just yet, probably because I’m just too distracted, but I do have that what to wear confusion that hits me every fall with running. I’ve actually been overdressing thinking I’ll be colder or just wanting to avoid that initial cold feeling, which is unusual for me. I’ve also been up way too early lately!

      November 7, 2014 at 12:17 am

Congrats! I still need to E-mail you about it:) I think I’ve been underdressing for the weather. I dress for the temperature but then rain and wind makes it feel so much colder! I am really hoping I don’t wake up at 4am tomorrow on my rest day!

I’m not sure what distance you run, but I used to bring a long sleeve shirt with me & lay it out somewhere along the trail I ran on. If I got cold during the run, I’d pick it up. I’d also almost always wear gloves & a headband.

      November 7, 2014 at 12:18 am

That’s a really good idea! I run around the city, and I would be worried my stuff would get stolen around here:)

I have been waking up wide awake too super early! And I hate that it is so dark but I know that once we cross the winter solstice, it slowly begins to lighten up again. I struggle sometimes with what to wear in this kinda in between fall/winter weather for my morning runs. I have been going lighter on the layers so far since I warm up pretty quickly.

      November 7, 2014 at 12:19 am

I have also been dressing lighter (shorts and tshirts most days) but when its windy and rainy I get so much colder than I would expect! I miss the days of just throwing on a tank top and shorts, no questions asked:)

You’re SO brave to be out and running in the cold! Not for me. I think the time change has gotten my internal clock all confused. Waking up at about 3:30 most nights and not being able to go back to sleep. Ugh! Have a great day!

    • [email protected] says

      November 7, 2014 at 12:20 am

Oh wow 3:30 is super early! I can handle 4-something since i get up at 5 anyway. I think I have just gotten used to the cold over the years because I REALLY don’t like the treadmill:)

No lie Target had its Christmas stuff up on Halloween. I was there. It is unacceptable. We are definitely seeing the first signs of the season to come around here. The wind is seriously picking up, and we are getting that damp cold that I hate SO MUCH.

Our weather has been a little crazy…warm one day and then cold and rainy and windy the next. I never know how to dress for running or anything else. These stores need to slow down with the holiday madness!

  6. Lacey@fairytalesandfitness says

    November 6, 2014 at 1:46 pm

I hate that it has been getting dark so early. For me, I am already starting to wear capris on my runs. I don’t like being chilly, even when I start.

    • [email protected] says

      November 7, 2014 at 12:22 am

I also hate that it gets dark so early! I am ready for bed at like 6pm!

  7. Lesley says

    November 6, 2014 at 1:59 pm

Walmart had their Christmas stuff up behind their Halloween section. I kept just looking at the floor so I wouldn’t have to see the Christmas section. Now I’ve seen my first Christmas commercial, Starbucks has their red cups, and I’m digging in my heals so I can enjoy Thanksgiving.

I always hate falling back an hour. I know I get the sun again when I’m driving in to work, but the past 3 days I slept right up until my alarm, and then this morning I was awake at 4:30. I’d like some middle ground so I’m not dragging at 9am.

    • [email protected] says

      November 7, 2014 at 12:23 am

I can’t believe the christmas stuff was out so early! I also want to enjoy November. I don’t want to be sick of christmas stuff before December!
And yes, this time change stuff is ridiculous!

    November 6, 2014 at 2:03 pm

    • [email protected] says

      November 7, 2014 at 12:24 am

Thanks! And I would rather fall behind than spring ahead with the time change, but I still feel SO thrown off!

  9. Cheryl says

    November 6, 2014 at 2:17 pm

For a precise answer, somewhere around 45-48* is my shorts limit. If I question, I wear a snow hat, because it is easy to take off and I just tuck it in my waistband if I don’t end up needing it.
It does feel like winter suddenly…I can’t wait to put up decorations, but I will, at least 2 more weeks.

    • [email protected] says

      November 7, 2014 at 12:26 am

Thats a good idea to just wear a hat if you think you might need it. My shorts limit is similar, although today it was 53 and I wore shorts and a tshirt but I was freezing by the end because it was pouring rain and windy! I need to remember that the rain makes it feel much colder when you get soaked!

  10. Chelsea says

    November 6, 2014 at 2:28 pm

Daylight savings has majorly messed with me too. I’ve been super productive in the morning (waho!) but get home from work and it’s just over. It’s dark already, and I keep just assuming it’s time to go to bed! Plus..it’s been super cold and snowy and rainy…so that also drops the motivation!
I struggle with when to transition to warmer running clothes, too. I walked to work the other morning in shorts and a light jacket and then about two feet out the door realized it was a very cold 40 degrees.
Wearing crazy socks under boots is certainly one of my favorite things about winter. If I have to wear snow boots, may as well take advantage of it. 🙂

      November 7, 2014 at 12:27 am

I love living in Southern California, but I do miss fall sometimes. I just want to wear tights and boots and sweaters like everyone else! Luckily it was chilly enough the other day to wear a sweater, but now it’s back in the 80s. Hopefully a cold front will come through soon!

I feel like the only one who hasn’t gotten a red cup yet, haha. Also I HATE THE COLD. Especially this wind and warm day, cold day nonsense. Ugh. The dark in the morning and then when I get out of work is the worst. Especially since the window in my office faces a brick wall so some days I’m not seeing the sun! Talk about depressing.

    • [email protected] says

      November 7, 2014 at 12:29 am

Don’t worry, I haven’t gotten a red cup either! The weather lately has been awful. I never know what to expect! I think that last winter was kind of traumatizing and I am so not ready to face all that again!

If you go to Charm City Yoga in Fells you can park at my apartment! They only tow after like 9pm when the security guard gets there haha let me know though because parking is such a pain over there. Maybe it will motivate me to actually go to a class. I’m determined to get there one of these days!

      November 7, 2014 at 12:32 am

I will have to look into the schedule there and I’ll let you know! I bought a 10 class pack, and I think I have like 4 left so I need to figure out if I’m gonna buy more or what to do.

  15. Lizzy says

    November 6, 2014 at 4:23 pm

I can’t figure out when to transition out of shorts either. This is my first time running in “real” winter so I find it all kinda confusing.

I might be the only one, but I’m really excited about seeing holiday stuff! I usually don’t get too excited about it but I totally am this year.

      November 7, 2014 at 12:33 am

Oh my goodness, I WISH Fort Lauderdale got cold enough that I would have an excuse to buy a whole new cold-weather wardrobe! Unfortunately we’re already back into the 80s after last week’s short lived cold front. The high 40s sounds like such great weather to look forward to on race day! I hope your marathon isn’t too windy though!

Ugh, I am far from ready for winter or the holidays. I enjoy fall running weather, but it always zooms by too fast to winter-y weather. I struggle to figure out what to wear running too! I tend to stick with shorts if it’s 45 degrees or warmer, as long as I have long sleeves on.
But you do have a good point about boots & compression socks- they are a pretty fantastic pairing 🙂

  24. Sam @ Grapefruit & Granola says

I have a love/hate relationship with daylight savings time. I leave for work at 6am EST and I used to hate that it was so dark when I left for work. Now the sun is rising right in my eyes 🙂 You can’t win. But I agree that it is great for working out!

    • [email protected] says

      November 8, 2014 at 12:06 am

Yep its so true that you just can’t win! Hopefully in a few weeks the sun won’t be as bad as it rises slightly later? Wishful thinking:)

  25. Kirtley @ The Gist of Fit says

    November 7, 2014 at 5:54 am

Oh man Lisa. I can’t even tell you. It is HARD to get yourself to run when it is DARK AND COLD. You really need a goal you are working toward. I am such a chicken with the cold. I agree with everything you said–what to wear, and daylight freakin’ savings. LOVE the sunrise…but don’t love how fast it’s dark.
I do think the change is fun though–a constant season and holiday change makes life unique, which I like.
    You’re awesome!

    • [email protected] says

      November 8, 2014 at 12:08 am

I agree that the change is nice! I always say I would love living somewhere thats warm year round, but honestly I would probably get bored and I’m sure i would find something to complain about!

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
