Wrapping Up October

October has been such a weird month and I can’t believe it’s over already! It started out with my marathon, then I took some time off, and spent the rest of the month running easy. We’ve had a house full of germs all month which is always fun. But at least the weather has finally cooled off! Since I didn’t write a weekly run down last week I’m going to briefly share the last 2 weeks of training as we are wrapping up October.

October has been such a weird month and I can't believe it's over already! It started out with my marathon, then I took some time off, and spent the rest of the month running easy. We've always had a house full of germs all month which is always fun. But at least the weather has finally cooled off! Post-Marathon Running

I’ve just kind of been easing back into running for the past couple of weeks. Last week I decided to add in a fartlek run. For the first time since my marathon I came up with a loose plan for the week. I ended up changing things around due to the weather and pulling a muscle in my shoulder. It’s nice to have that flexibility right now!

A Stressful October

There were many times this month that I thought “I’m really glad I’m not still training for my marathon!” But I also wondered if the training keeps me distracted from everything else. I feel like our family was sick the entire month, between cold, allergies, stomach bugs and the dreaded hand foot and mouth disease (thanks daycare!). Then I went and pulled a muscle (or maybe pinched a nerve?) on Friday after I worked out and was trying to trap a spider than I saw in the basement. It got better pretty quickly, but was uncomfortable enough that I didn’t want to run on Saturday.

What’s Next?

I was really hoping to do at least one more small/short race this year, but the uncertainty of everything in my life tells me I better not sign up for anything. I guess if would be a last minute thing if I did do anything. Also, any speed I had in my legs is totally gone right now (which I learned on Thursday’s fartlek run). I’m sure if will come back quickly but I am far from my 5k PR shape.

wednesday run

It’s kind of hard to believe that we are wrapping up October and heading into November and the last 2 months of the year. I feel like 2021 just started like last week!

I hope everyone who celebrates has a fun Halloween today!

I think you were so smart to do a proper marathon recovery and you will be better for it. There are always more races to run and only one body to do it with. Have a great Halloween and week ahead

Exactly! I went like 2 years without a race so what’s another few months?

Happy Halloween. Hope your shoulder is feeling better.

    Can’t believe it’s November already.

I have many races left to run. 15k 5k 10k half marathon. No marathon. Lol

Glad your shoulder is feeling better! I hope November goes a little better for you and your family, and the germs stay away. I have nothing on my racing calendar until mid-January…but there are a couple of November races I’m considering. Of course, both are on football weekends LOL Happy Halloween 😉

I kind of feel like the germs will only get worse once winter comes, but we’ll see!

Oh boy- hand foot and mouth. Somehow we never had that but I know it’s really uncomfortable! Yes, I think you’re smart not to push yourself. Like you said, you can always sign up for something last minute if you feel up to it.
Hope you have a healthy start to November!

He didn’t have it too bad luckily. I don’t even know if I would have known he had it if daycare didn’t call to send him home which prompted me to take him to the doctor!

Nope, no races. Kinda hard to plan anything right now — including Thanksgiving!

I’m sorry about the pinched nerve. I get that sometimes and it can be really painful! Glad it resolved quickly.

With all the races during the holidays, I’m sure you can find something if you decide to you want to run something.

There aren’t too many races around here in the winter, but I’m sure I can find something if I really want to. Hopefully the timing will work out!

I also agree that October was sort of a weird month and went by quickly.

Sorry to hear about your shoulder but glad that it’s feeling better. I have had a few weird injuries like that which always make me shake my head – one time I hurt my foot simply getting out of bed, lol.

Haha isn’t it the worst when you hurt yourself doing something that isn’t even related to working out?

You earned some down time from running after that marathon! I like being able to wing it with my running, but it is good to have a plan to keep me motivated as we head into the dark days of winter.

I hope November is less stressful and more healthy at your house!

Thank you! I agree, its nice to have flexibility but also good to have some sort of a plan. I’m trying to at least plan my run days with some kind of faster (fartlek type) workout once a week.

I think you are smart to just run out the year. There’s no need to push yourself right now. It’s been a tough year for a lot of us. Ahem. While I’m happy to be able to resume running, I have to work on ankle mobility before I up my miles. Thank goodness for the pool. Like you said it’s nice to have options.

We’re seeing ALL the illnesses now. Sorry you have to go through it in your house.

Our pediatrician said they’ve been seeing all the winter illnesses, plus more, since the summer. But I feel like its not going to slow down any time soon. Its so tough for everyone!

Yikes, hand, foot, and mouth! Those daycares- so germy 🙁 Sounds like a bit of a wild month, glad your marathon was in the beginning! Hope the neck/shoulder is feeling better.

I’m so glad my marathon was earlier this month! I think someone in my house has been sick every week since then. The HFM wasn’t as bad as I expected (he had a mild case) but still had to miss a few days of daycare.

Seriously I can’t believe we’re headed right into the holidays already. Fasted freaking year ever. You are so wise to give yourself some post-marathon recovery time. The germs lately have been terrible!

I will probably run Thanksgiving (even though I said I wouldn’t), and the local Gingerbread Man run. It’s in a new location, so that might be neat to check out.

I don’t know about you, but I’m counting on 2022 to be a fabulous year!

I’m just wrapping up the racing season in less than 2 weeks. Then it will time for some rest. Which really doesn’t end up being much rest because it’s the holidays and I like to outrun my holiday food. haha! Yep, the next couple of months will be a blur!

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
