Springtime Is For Running

Does anyone else feel like over the past couple of weeks the spring weather has brought out ALL the runners? I guess springtime is for running, and I’m not questioning it. I will be the first to admit that the warmer weather has had me itching to get outside. Running shorts, sweat, the smell of sunscreen…I missed it all.

Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

Table of contents

  • Springtime Is For Running
    • Monday: 10 minutes elliptical, 3 miles run/walk, core work
    • Tuesday: 10 minutes spin bike, 10 minutes core, 10 minutes upper body, mobility
    • Wednesday: 35 minutes spin bike
    • Thursday: 1 hour total body strength training
    • Friday: 20 minutes spin bike, 10 minutes glutes, 10 minutes stability
    • Saturday: 10 minutes mobility, 30 minute run/walk, core work
    • Sunday: Rest

Springtime Is For Running

I had a pretty good week and even got in two run/walks (which were mostly running). The foot pain was at a minimum and didn’t bother me at all before or after running, just felt a little stiff if I would get up for the first time after sitting for a while. I have been seeing my chiropractor more regularly for dry needling, ART, ultrasound, and adjustments, and I think it’s helping. Still no sign of orthotics. I tried calling on Friday but the office was already closed.

Monday: 10 minutes elliptical, 3 miles run/walk, core work

The week started out pretty rough because we were in Michigan from Sunday to Monday for a funeral. I can’t really get into any details, but it was pretty awful. I went to the hotel gym on Monday morning and did a quick workout to help make it through the day.

treadmill run

Tuesday: 10 minutes spin bike, 10 minutes core, 10 minutes upper body, mobility

We landed really late on Monday night, but I knew I would feel better if I got in a short workout on Tuesday morning. I just did a few minutes on the bike to warm up and then 2 of the Run and 10 videos, followed by hip mobility and foam rolling.

foam rolling

Wednesday: 35 minutes spin bike

Nothing special here, but I got it done!

spin bike

Thursday: 1 hour total body strength training

Lots of squats and lunges left my legs a little sore the next day! I’ve been pretty good about leaving time at the end of all my workouts to foam roll, so that helped.

Friday: 20 minutes spin bike, 10 minutes glutes, 10 minutes stability

dry needling

No pictures from my workout, but I did see my chiropractor for some more dry needling! We worked on a different area and I think it helped alot. Only time will tell.

Saturday: 10 minutes mobility, 30 minute run/walk, core work

I couldn’t resist getting outside for a run. I did keep it short and took walk breaks. Still, there was lots of sweat and that felt amazing. Even though it was really humid I was happy to be wearing shorts again!

Saturday run

Sunday: Rest

All those “10 minute” workouts are from the Run and 10 DVD. There are 5 workouts on the DVD so I did each of them once this week. I also did the Kinetic Revolution 30 Day Challenge exercises each day.

I’m grateful that I am seeing improvements, even without orthotics, because deep down I know they are not going to be a cure-all. Now I’m just crossing my fingers that everything comes together with a real return to running over the next few weeks or months. You know what’s missing from this week? Yoga. Oh well, I had a good streak for a few weeks and hopefully I will get back to it soon.

Has springtime brought out all the runners where you live?
How much time to you put into injury prevention each week?

My house is on a street that is a cut through to a pretty popular route in my town. The runner’s have been out in packs. I’m so insanely jealous! I’ll be out there soon enough…I hope. Glad you are feeling relief for your foot pain. I’m so intrigued by dry needling. My friend who is a PT said she’d use me as a pin cushion to practice on. Lol!

I get so jealous when I see other runners and I cant run! You should definitely try the dry needling, especially if you have a friend who could do it!

I’m sorry you had to attend a funeral, I saw one guy in my neighborhood running who I used to see last year. I guess he only returns when it’s warmer out lol. it was brutal on Saturday with that humidity! I wasn’t expecting it.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 1, 2017 at 7:25 pm

The humidity really came out of nowhere! It’s too early in the year for that!

  3. Susan says

Yay for getting back to running! This is such great news that your foot is finally cooperating. I hope you get your orthotics soon so you can make your “full” comeback!!

      May 1, 2017 at 7:25 pm

Thanks! I wish the offie would answer the phone when I call to check on them! It’s been over 3 weeks now.

  4. Kristina says

    May 1, 2017 at 6:02 am

Yeah! I’m glad that you’re seeing some improvements now!

I noticed last week that ALL the runners were out. I think the local running clubs have started a new “season” here because the groups were extra big last week and. they were all wearing their matching shirts!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 1, 2017 at 7:26 pm

That’s so surprising to me because it is warm all year where you live! They should be out running in the winter months when its not as brutally hot!

  5. Susie @ Suzlyfe says

    May 1, 2017 at 6:54 am

Come on foot! I was definitely one of those runners that was out 😀 But then we also have alllll the tourists around here, which is super annoying.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 1, 2017 at 7:27 pm

I remember that being an issue when I lived down near the harbor. I would get so annoyed especially when tourists were already out before 8am!

There aren’t many runners in these parts. If I go to the trails on the weekend, all the charity training teams are there, although it’s a bit early in the season for that. There’s one diehard lady that trains through the winter for Boston that I’ve seen for years. That used to be me, I guess. : )
    Sorry about the funeral.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 1, 2017 at 7:28 pm

I see one runner who is out every day, no matter what the weather. There must be something nice about that type of consistency but I think I need rest days and breaks from time to time.

I’m sorry about your loss, it’s always tough to fit workouts in and feel okay during those times. As for the weather, I feel like we skipped right over spring here in Charlotte. But I see runners out everywhere.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 1, 2017 at 7:29 pm

Thank you. And the weather here has been pretty strange too. Not as bad as other years, but I don’t know where Saturday’s humidity came from!

I don’t put enough time into injury prevention unless I am forced to by said injury 🙂 I thnk it’s great that you are doing so much cross training that does wonders for me

I was telling my husband to foam roll after his 20 miler this weekend and he said “well you foam roll every day and your always injured”. I had to laugh because he’s right.

  11. Michael Anderson says

    May 1, 2017 at 8:30 am

Definitely true – I only got in one run this weekend (back & forth to NYC to pick up Danny on Sunday!)and saw the most runners out since last summer! It was great seeing people out there 🙂 My mornings are very solitary (not that I mind after all these years), so seeing people out is always great.

Back when we lived around Boston the runners would always come out in mid-April, but then if the weather was cold they would go back until it warmed up after a few days around the marathon.

Injury prevention … um, yeah … um … I am aware that touting 29 years running injury-free doesn’t count as prevention. 😉

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 1, 2017 at 7:32 pm

I always find it kind of refreshing to see other runners out in the early morning after a winter of being out there alone.
I think the best injury prevention is not getting injured a first time…it’s all downhill after that!

    May 1, 2017 at 8:37 am

I am sorry about the funeral…those are always so hard. There are tons of runners out and about now here! Ryan and I remarked the other day how we didn’t realize how many runners lived in our complex.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 1, 2017 at 7:32 pm

It’s definitely interesting to start seeing all the runners come out!

  13. Suzy says

    May 1, 2017 at 10:31 am

Hey, I dunno. Orthotics can be your answer and give you immediate relief. I’m not even an optimist (more of a realist) but I know so many people who have finally bitten the bullet and got orthotics and then got relief right away. I hope this is the case for you! When are you supposed to get them?

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 1, 2017 at 7:34 pm

That would be amazing. But I keep thinking about what I will do if they don’t help. Ive heard horror stories so am honestly a little scared. I wish they would just be ready so I can stop wondering about it! I called the office Friday and today to check on them and it was closed both times!

  14. Lesley says

    May 1, 2017 at 10:49 am

I haven’t seen a lot of people in my neighborhood running, and only one runner last weekend when I was out. I’m meeting up with a running group next Monday and I hope the weather is nice for that. We’re meeting at a park that has a running loop.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 1, 2017 at 7:34 pm

I’m sure there will be more runners out when the weather starts to improve!

  15. Lacey@fairytalesandfitness says

    May 1, 2017 at 11:42 am

I always see runners out while I am working and it makes me want to get out to run while I am stuck at work. I have never done dry needling but the picture of it looks painful. Does it hurt?

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 1, 2017 at 7:35 pm

I feel the same way when I am driving to and from work! The dry needling isn’t “painful” but its not fun either. Ive had it in a few areas and the foot is the worst, probably because its so sensitive. Its kind a combination of ticking and pinching. But once the needles are in it doesn’t hurt at all.

  16. Meagn @ Meg Go Run says

    May 1, 2017 at 1:21 pm

I’m glad things are feeling good! You are very focused. I spend about 15 minutes a day on injury prevention. Stretching and mobility stuff. But I still get injured!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 1, 2017 at 7:36 pm

I think 15 minutes a day is a good amount! As you know I do lots of injury prevention too and am also always injured.

  17. Michelle @ Running with Attitude says

    May 1, 2017 at 6:39 pm

I’m so sorry about the funeral – never easy.

It sounds like you are making good progress! Maybe you won’t need the orthotics.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 1, 2017 at 7:37 pm

That would be great! But I feel better that Im getting them just in case. I’ve thought I was getting better before and then had multiple setbacks.

  18. Elle says

    May 1, 2017 at 7:10 pm

Definitely more runners out there these days.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

  19. Kimberly Hatting says

    May 1, 2017 at 7:17 pm

Oh, so sorry about the funeral. I know they are supposed to be a time of celebration of the departed person, but they are so tough. Hugs to you 😉 I’m trying to focus a injury prevention this cycle…and so far it’s been helping a ton. I’m foam rolling every day (5-10 minutes at the minimum), and keeping up with the foot massaging (from last year’s PF crisis).

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 1, 2017 at 7:39 pm

Thank you. This person was very young so that makes it really difficult.
Good job with the injury prevention! It seems to be working well for you so far!

  20. Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says

    May 1, 2017 at 7:35 pm

I’m so glad to see you out there running! It always makes me smile (ok, laugh) this time of year because I run all winter and barely see another runner, but now? It’s like running on a highway.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 1, 2017 at 7:40 pm

It amazes me too! I always wonder if they were on a treadmill, taking the winter off, or starting from scratch.

  21. Gina says

    May 1, 2017 at 7:39 pm

Good news that things seem to be looking up for your foot!! Yeah!! That dry needling looks like torture to me! Lol. Yes.. definately more runners and walkers. I always laugh because I’m pretty hard core with weather and I oitsude running.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 2, 2017 at 4:46 am

Yea there are definitely lots of runners that avoid running outside all winter and then make it back out when the weather warms up!

When I first started running, I struggled with knee injuries off and on for two years. I have found that strength training and the right shoes have kept my knees happy for over two years now. So sorry for your loss. I hope May is a great month for you!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 2, 2017 at 8:02 pm

I feel like the dry needling is really effective but I really don’t like when the needles go in. Especially on my lower leg. But it all happens pretty quickly and I think Im getting used to it.

I am lucky that we are outside for the most part year round here. I have noticed a decline from the crowds I saw out in January. I’d say New Year’s resolutions have started to fizzle.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 2, 2017 at 8:05 pm

Thats interesting that you are seeing less runners. Makes sense though between New Years resolutions and the heat!

I see the same die-hards running in my neighborhood. But my neighborhood park is slammed this time of year with people our walking and kids enjoying the playground. I’ve wondered about dry needling. I wonder why it’s taking so long to get your orthotics? That’s insane! I’m averaging two 15 minutes sessions for hip/glute strength each week. Thanks for linking, LIsa!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 2, 2017 at 8:08 pm

Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 mile MP/1 mile easy. I took a few hours of PTO in the morning to do this on the trail because I knew wouldn’t be able to do it this weekend. This was my first time on the trail since my marathon last November. It was nice to be back there and the perfect place to do this kind of long run. It was the kind of run where you start thinking “ok cool I just did a tough MP workout” but then you remember you actually need to run 26 miles in a row at that pace. Luckily there’s still 9 more weeks of training…although that doesn’t really sound like that much!
41 miles for the week and got in 2 strength sessions. Taking it easy this weekend other than chasing the kids around for all their activities! #run #marathontraining #longrun
It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It is a little frustrating to have to plan more time for an easy run. But it’s definitely worth it to recover quicker and feel better on workout days! #run #marathongtraining #easyrun
You know marathon training is starting to get real You know marathon training is starting to get real when you start losing track of what training week it is. I had to check my calendar but this was week 6, so 10 weeks to go!

I ran the Charles Street 12 last weekend so this week was all about easy miles and recovering from the race. That went well until I went and ran all the hills yesterday followed by walking around a maze and fun park for 5 hours. I got in some strength and mobility this morning and now I’m back to focusing on recovery!

If you’re training for a race how many weeks do you have left?

15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 9 15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 91% humidity 🫠 Pretty sure that was harder than my race last weekend, but got it done. Now off to my second workout of the day- taking the kids to an outdoor fun park. RIP to my legs.
What are you up to this weekend?
