June Runfessions

It’s hard to believe it’s already the last Friday in June because that means we are halfway through 2018! Also, now that the summer solstice has passed the days start to get shorter, which sounds pretty depressing. For some reason I always think that it should be light out at 5am all summer long. Either way, here are some June runfessions for this month!

June Runfessions

1. June Runfessions about Hydration

Some days I do a great job with hydrating. Others, not so much. One of my excuses is that we are constantly running out of water coolers at work. (We will get a shipment and go through them in like a week or two and then have to wait weeks to have more delivered). I bring my own 32 ounce hydroflask (affiliate link) to work and sometimes an extra bottle of water, but even that doesn’t seem to be enough.

2. Flat terrain

I’m embarrassed to say how much I enjoyed running on flat terrain last week. Even my flattest route here in Baltimore still has hills. I’m sure I don’t like hills these days because they are hard (and maybe my glutes just aren’t strong enough). I know I need to make it a point to run them more to get better at them. I just really miss living down by the harbor where I could run flat routes every day if I wanted!

3. Sweating in the rain

One of the nice things about running in the rain is that when you are done, no one can tell if you are wet from the rain or from sweat. After my runs last week I was a little embarrassed to go back to the hotel after my runs because I knew I might see a coworker in the lobby. At least on Friday I figured it would look like I was just wet from the rain, which is much less gross than being soaked in sweat.

4. June Runfessions about Running clothes

Even though I have plenty of running clothes, I splurged on Running Warehouse last week and bought some new tank tops. The price wasn’t bad and I know I’ll wear them, so why not?

5. Koala Clip

Another running-related purchase I made recently was a Koala Clip. Have you ever heard of this? It’s a little pouch with a clip that attaches to your sports bra. I’ve been on the lookout for a better way to carry my phone while running (it’s a little too big for my Flip Belt) so I’m hoping this works out!

    Used to love running in the rain for the same reason! But I #runfess that I was much better about running in the rain if it started raining while I was running, haha. It was soooo hard to go out and start a run in the rain.

      I agree its hard to start a run when its already raining! Especially if its coming down hard.

    I don’t hydrate as well as I should and I can’t believe we are halfway threw the year! I don’t carry my phone when I run.

      I think staying properly hydrated is a struggle for many people!

    I haven’t run in the rain this summer, but in the past, yep, sweating in the rain is a thing! I always found that so odd. And refreshing!!!

    You know that hills are definitely not my friend!

    I still use a phone arm band thing but I never liked it. Can you easily get your phone out of the clip?Hills? What are those?? Haha!

      The Koala clip has a case with a zipper, so you have to just unclip the whole thing to get your phone out. It’s really not hard to do and I still find it easier than dealing with a belt or armband!

    I’ve been pretty good at staying hydrated this summer thankfully. I’ve noticed always having water accessible is really helpful in getting me to drink it. That’s crazy to me you guys go weeks without water coolers! They should definitely increase the frequency of shipments.

      Apparently whoever supplies our water always delivers late or something…I said we should get a different supplier!

    I love running in a warm rain. sometimes, if the conditions are right, I will head out for a second run just because it has started to rain!

    I have to admit, I am one of the 4 people left on the planet who doesn’t run with a phone. I guess that makes me an old-timer. I just don’t like to feel weighed down at all when I run!

      I just like having my phone with me for safety purposes! Sometimes I wish I could just leave it at home but I would be too nervous that I would need to get in touch with someone.

    I grabbed the FlipBelt Zipper a few months ago because the zipper on my SpiBelt was dying after 4 or so years and I have no problem fitting my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 or iPhone 7 Plus …

    Hydration – I am crap! I have definitely been dehydrated several times already on weekend runs. Really have to be better.

    Hills – LOVE them! 🙂

      Good to know that the FlipBelt Zipper fits bigger phones! I have a different brand that my phone will fit in, but it’s very snug.

    Hills…..they are unavoidable (like the summer heat LOL), so I just deal with them. They make us stronger, right? 😉

    I usually use a waist pack with my water bottle and my keys and phone both fit in there. I love running in the rain and yes a flatter course makes a huge difference!

      Some light rain and a flat course sound pretty nice for running, especially when the heat makes it tough!

    I like flat terrain too. I don’t think my next race is hilly, so I can enjoy my flat neighborhood more this time around. It was difficult to get hills in there for San Fran, and I used the treadmill a lot with its incline.

      I like to use my treadmill for flat running since I cant avoid hills when I run outside!

    I totally understand what you mean about hydration. I actually think I was doing a better job at staying hydrated in the winter – so weird!

    I’ve actually heard great things about the koala clip and I’ve been meaning to try it out myself!

      So far I like the Koala Clip! I’ve used it about 3 times and its worked well so far.

    The Koala Cup looks interesting. One reason I’ve got the iPhone 6S is that it squeezes into some of my shorts pockets. I have to drive to totally avoid hills so usually I just deal with them.

    I never heard of the Koala clip! Interesting, but I feel like it would be hard to grab the phone mid run. I usually end up just holding mine which obviously isn’t always convenient either! Yesterday, I got stuck in the rain and I would have kept going but I had my phone! So I took off my shirt and wrapped it around my phone so it wouldn’t get wet.

      So the clip actually has a little case with a zipper, which is nice because my phone stays dry in the rain or if Im sweating alot. But I need to remove the clip and then take out the phone, which actually isn’t as annoying as I thought it might be.

    I can’t believe that the year is already half over either… like wow, time flew by. With my summer hydrating, honestly I had been overdoing it because I was so scared of under doing it!

    I have never heard of that koala clip. You’ll have to let us know what you think of it. I recently just bought a new pouch for my phone that I may do s review about.

    omg let’s not even go there regarding the days slowly getting shorter. I love the lighter mornings and can’t even think about how dark it will be again before we know it!

    I never heard of the Koala Clip but it looks cool – I hope it works! I’ve been using a SPIbelt to carry in my phone for a while and it’s worked well – does the clip work even if you wear a hydration pack on your back?

    My neighborhood is really hilly so I know what you mean. When I was marathon training, I actually ended up doing a lot of runs on flat terrain, and it always gave me a confidence boost since my paces felt faster! Hills are good for you, like vegetables, haha!

      I don’t think the clip would work with a hydration pack. Besides, when I wear my hydration pack I just put my phone in there so I wouldn’t really need the clip.
      My paces are always so much faster on flat terrain too!

    With stroller, you know that I am only game for flat terrain. I won’t even do the one hill that is near us!

    I use a SPIbelt for my phone or when I need to carry water I use my Camden waist pack.
    I’m not sure I could manage that Koala clip…looks like a yoga pose.

      It’s actually not that hard to get on and off! I was a little worried at first but its easier than it looks.

    I can totally relate to the hydration part. Some days are easy, others not so much. I try to put the water bottle right in front of my face so I won’t forget.

    That koala clip sounds intriguing.

      Haha thats a good idea! As long as I have easy access to water, I will usually drink it.

Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 mile MP/1 mile easy. I took a few hours of PTO in the morning to do this on the trail because I knew wouldn’t be able to do it this weekend. This was my first time on the trail since my marathon last November. It was nice to be back there and the perfect place to do this kind of long run. It was the kind of run where you start thinking “ok cool I just did a tough MP workout” but then you remember you actually need to run 26 miles in a row at that pace. Luckily there’s still 9 more weeks of training…although that doesn’t really sound like that much!
41 miles for the week and got in 2 strength sessions. Taking it easy this weekend other than chasing the kids around for all their activities! #run #marathontraining #longrun
It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It is a little frustrating to have to plan more time for an easy run. But it’s definitely worth it to recover quicker and feel better on workout days! #run #marathongtraining #easyrun
You know marathon training is starting to get real You know marathon training is starting to get real when you start losing track of what training week it is. I had to check my calendar but this was week 6, so 10 weeks to go! 

I ran the Charles Street 12 last weekend so this week was all about easy miles and recovering from the race. That went well until I went and ran all the hills yesterday followed by walking around a maze and fun park for 5 hours. I got in some strength and mobility this morning and now I’m back to focusing on recovery!

15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 9 15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 91% humidity 🫠 Pretty sure that was harder than my race last weekend, but got it done. Now off to my second workout of the day- taking the kids to an outdoor fun park. RIP to my legs.
