Postpartum Training: Charles Street 12 Race Week

The Charles Street 12 has come and gone already! I am going to share my workouts from race week and then do a race recap in a separate post.

Charles Street 12 Race Week

This was a nice, easy week of running withe just one light strength workout on Tuesday. I didn’t think too much about the race which is a good thing!

Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Light strength training

Usually I do 2 days of strength training a week, but I finished my last phase last week and it didn’t make sense to start a new one this week. So for my one day of strength training I kept it really light, did some band work, and spent some time on mobility.

Wednesday: 3 easy miles

It’s so dark in the mornings now! I don’t remember much about this run but I think that it was kind of humid again. What else is new?

Thursday: 3.25 miles and strides

I ran this with the stroller and almost forgot that I was going to do strides at the end. So I ended up running a little farther than my planned 3 miles.

Friday: Rest
Saturday: 12 Mile Race

Race recap to come at some point! My finish time was 1:36:04 which was an 8:00 min/mile pace.

Sunday: Rest

Now it’s time to rest and recover. Of course on Saturday afternoon I started looking up other races to sign up for. But I stopped myself and decided to give it a week or so to see how I feel. While training for this was manageable, it does put a lot on Rob to be available to take care of Grayson when I am out running and racing. (Luckily right now Rob doesn’t feel like training/racing, otherwise it would be really tough to manage!)

The other thing that makes training more challenging is that I am still breastfeeding. Usually I can pump and then immediately head out for my run, and then pump or feed Grayson right when I get back. But with racing, there is more time away from home before and after the race. I don’t think I could manage to race longer than 12 miles, or maybe a half-marathon, for a few more months. Besides, whenever I do a morning training run I am usually pumping and we give him a bottle. I don’t like missing out on feeding him in the morning so it’s a balancing act for sure.

Other than a bruised toenail (thanks to the net downhill course) I am feeling pretty good! I was a little sore on Sunday but not too bad. I’ll admit that I did hardly any foam rolling or stretching. Definitely another reason to take it easy this week and focus more on recovery!

After a race do you immediately sign up for the next one?
Do you tend to think too much about an upcoming race?
Who else has toenail issues from running? (I think mine are permanently damaged)

I’m linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down!

Thanks, it went really well! Now I just need to actually sit down and write the recap before I forget all the details!

Well done! I’m anxious to hear more about the race! Toenails UGH. While I don’t usually get bruised toenails, I do get “clear” blisters under my first and second toenails (usually on both feet). The thing is, there have been so many blisters (if that’s, indeed, what they actually are) that the nails have thickened (I know, #gross) and I can’t tell when new blisters are there because they form under the thick nail. They don’t hurt, but my nails (if you look closely) are really thick on those toes LOL Thank goodness for nail polish. I don’t think it’s the shoes, but the way my toes grip as I run…so I’m not sure if there’s a cure or not….

My toenails on the messed up toes are permanently thick too. They’re a mess! And I also wish I knew if there was a cure!

I have so enjoyed following your journey to your first race postpartum. You’ve done an amazing job balancing everything and it sounds like the race went well too. Looking forward to your recap!

Thank you! It definitely took some time to figure out a good schedule but once I did it wasn’t too hard to stick with it.

Congrats on a solid race! 12 miles is a unique distance, I’ve never heard of one before. How fun. I am bad in that I start thinking about the next race before I even do the first one! I think it’s some sort of mental security for me, but I am trying to stop because I find that I can never fully commit and go all out in a race when I have another one scheduled.

12 miles is a pretty random distance, but I like it! Although usually i just feel like I might as well have just run a half-marathon:)

Sounds like a great comeback race! Solid pace! I did not breastfeed so I don’t know how any of that works, but it sounds like it would be a challenge. Kudos to you! Yep, I’ve got messed up toenails. Mine bruise but then don’t turn black and fall off, they just grow new ones underneath the others! Kind of odd and I have to trim them down really short. It’s a trade off I’ll take to keep running though!

That’s what happens to mine too! I dont mind the color too much since i can paint them dark colors. But I hate that they are so thick now and it hurts when they get all messed up!

Congrats again on such a strong comeback race! I’m looking forward to the recap. I am the same way. As soon as I cross a finish line, I start hunting for another race to do. They’re addictive!

Congrats on a great race! I don’t think I’ve ever made it longer than 24 hours after a race without searching for the next one. No toenail issues yet knock wood.

I hope you never have to deal with toenail issues- they are terrible!

19 miles! 7 on the treadmill, 12 outside, 1,272 to 19 miles! 7 on the treadmill, 12 outside, 1,272 total feet of elevation gain. Amazing weather. Listened to Life of a Showgirl on the treadmill and had some podcasts saved for my outside run but couldn’t get my headphones to connect. This was challenging by the end and I kept thinking how hard it would be if I needed to run another 7 miles today (and all miles at a faster pace) but this is why we train. Feeling like I’m in a good place with 6 weeks to go! How was your run today? #run #marathontraining #longrun
And just like that September is over…but most of And just like that September is over…but most of it still felt like August. This month I ran 175 miles, my highest since last November. The long runs are getting longer, and I’m slowly feeling like my fitness is building. I can’t believe that by the time October is over I’ll be getting ready to taper for the marathon! Let’s hope October brings lots of good miles and maybe some cooler weather. Was September a good month of running for you? #september #marathontraining #running
Getting my hair untangled was a harder workout tha Getting my hair untangled was a harder workout than running 15 miles. When will it actually feel like fall? #running #marathontraining #fallrunning
15 mile long run workout this morning! Honestly, e 15 mile long run workout this morning! Honestly, every step of this felt challenging, so I’m pretty happy that I still hit my paces. I’m going to blame it on the humidity. WHY is it still so warm and humid when it’s almost October 😩🥵 I made the mistake of leaving my hair in a ponytail so of course it was a tangled mess by the time I was done. When will I learn? Just glad I got this done to wrap up week 9 of @richmondmarathon training! Is it still humid where you are? #run #marathontraining #richmondmarathon #longrun
