I’m not really sure what’s on my mind this week, so I’m just gonna start typing and see where it goes. Once again, thanks for Amanda for hosting Thursdays are for Thinking Out Loud!

Thinking Out Loud #11: Food, Storms, and More

1. Blogging

People who don’t blog probably have no understanding of “hosting” or “link-ups”. I know I didn’t understand it until a few months after I started blogging. A few weeks ago I was talking with my family about my blog (now that they know about it), and my mom was asking about this “Thinking Out Loud” stuff. She thought that maybe I was actually getting together with people in real life to think out loud. I’m not sure how the logistics of something like that would work, but I guess if you didn’t know any better and you heard that someone was “hosting” that would be what you thought of. But I explained to her that no, I am not that social in real life and tried to explain what a link-up is. 2. Brita Filters

Does anyone actually change their Brita Filter when they are supposed to? I know we let ours go way too long before one of us (usually me) caves and changes it. I know it’s not that difficult, but emptying the Brita, and waiting the 15 minutes for the new filter to soak? It’s kind of inconvenient. It’s also one of those items that we never remember to buy until we are out of them.

3. My go-to lunch

This has been my go-to lunch this week:

Spaghetti squash, ground beef, and whatever veggies I can find with tomato sauce. Easy and delicious.

4. Mixing foods

I was asked on Facebook the other day by a college friend if I still need to keep all the food on my plate not touching like when I was in college. As you can see from above picture, not at all, and now I make foods that get mixed up all the time. Certain things should be eaten mostly separately, but anything that “goes together” is fine.

5. Thunderstorms

This has been like the week of thunderstorms in Baltimore. You can read about Salt’s experience almost getting blown away in a tornado here. On Monday it looked pretty scary out and there was a torrential downpour with thunder and lightning. Tuesday there was a strange storm where for awhile it was sunny but you could hear thunder. Finally Wednesday it was so much cooler out during the day (I was still super sweaty from my early morning run) but maybe all the storms cooled things off for a few days (fingers crossed).

6. Yoga

Due to Tuesday’s storm I passed on going to my usual hot yoga class. I figured it probably wasn’t worth getting struck by lightning on my walk home. Instead I did Reflexion yoga and it was actually a pretty good one. The class was called “Cleaning out the closet” and was all about getting rid of physical and emotional “junk”. I am always bad at the mental part of yoga, which I think interferes with letting my body actually relax. It’s a work in progress.

7. Daikon Radishes

We went to a different grocery store last weekend, and instead of buying parsnips I accidentally bought Daikon radishes. I thought the parsnips were unusually big, but the sign said parsnips and they were white and cylinder shape so I went with it. As they were being rung up I noticed the cashier rung them as “daikon” and I didn’t know what that meant (but they were like 75 cents or something so I didn’t question it). When I started cutting them I knew they weren’t parsnips and so I googled it and found out they were daikon radishes. I thought they had a weird (maybe bitter?) taste…Rob didn’t think they tasted like anything.

8. Body Pump 90

Has anyone else taken the Body Pump 90 release? I’ve only done it twice but I think some of the tracks are really hard including back (if you use enough weight) and core. I didn’t think the core track would get me like it did, but you do about a few hundred pulses and I really felt it the next day.

Do you mix your food together or eat it separately?

    Haha I love your turnip/daikon story! I’ve actually bought daikon radish once (in a Japanese grocery shop – it was about 10x the cost of what you paid!) Apparently it’s super good for you, and I think I had it raw… I still prefer a parsnip though!

      Glad to know that the radishes are so good for you! I don’t think I would get them again but at least I can say I tried them once!

    I actually do change my brita filter on time! It’s mostly because I start to taste a difference in the water and it drives me nuts. I do have a bad habit of not filling it back up, though.

      Hm I don’t think I’ve ever noticed a difference in the taste. I am actually really good about refilling it! We are constantly drinking it and I hate when it gets too low!

    Ha! I used to do the same thing with my food and keep it separate. There are definitely things that I still do that with though! And one of my fav dishes is spaghetti squash. One of my favorite end of run rituals….legs up the wall!

    Haha Daikon radishes are the asian radishes and they are slightly spicy to the taste, but pretty good. I don’t know if I have had them roasted or anything, but go you for trying it out!
    And just about everything in bblogger world has to be explained to nonbloggers. We definitely speak a different language, like when we lapse into runnerspeak. It’s as close to a foreign language as I will ever manage.

      I think it was the spiciness that I noticed! I am WAY more sensitive to spicy foods than Rob which is why I think I noticed the taste but he didn’t.
      Blogger terms really are like a foreign language! (As is running talk)

    I haven’t done Body Pump in AGES but every time I see it I think dang I need to get back into it!

      I feel like I can never get as good of a workout on my own as I get with Body Pump! It’s addicting!

    We’ve had the same storms here in Massachusetts and tornado warnings a few time this week. Very strange for us.

      Kinda scary, huh? Over the past few years we have had a few tornado warnings and I really didn’t know that they ever happened on the east coast.

    I definitely used to keep all my food separate. I am not sure exactly when that changed, but things taste better mixed! That is a bummer about the radish mixup! At least the pork chops turned out good!

      I don’t know when or how I started eating foods mixed together either. But its alot easier to not have to worry about them touching!

    It must be kind of strange for people who are a little older than us to understand the whole blogging thing. Putting your life on the internet? Taking pictures of your food? Making blends? Definitely a little strange from an outsiders perspective, but I honestly couldn’t imagine life without it 😀

      It is really weird! But once you get into it, it feels so normal! It makes it easy to forget that other people have no idea what we’re talking about:)

    That’s so funny and cute that your mom asked that about the linkups! I haven’t really done any linkups since blogging but mainly because I’m a disorganized writer much like I am a meal planner and don’t know what I’m writing about until I sit down and do it most times. Glad you liked the pork chops!

      I find that the link ups help to give a little structure to my blogging week. I would find it too hard to think of something different to talk about every day on my own!

    I’m definitely on the everything-on-the-plate-should-be-seperate train. In fact, if I’m eating something like stir fry I eat all of the ingredients separately based on preference. So, for example I might eat all the carrots first since they are my least favorite and then I work my way down until all I have left on the plate is the chicken which is my most favorite, haha.

      Hahaha this made me so happy because I love eating my food in order from what I like least to what I like best! I think its because my parents made me eat everything on my plate so I learned that i might as well get rid of the stuff I didn’t like first. But I’m not sure if I could manage that with a stir fry!

    haha – love all of this. Again, you say you have no idea what to write, but it was an awesome post! My thoughts:

    – I had my brother buy my older son a couple of food separator plates (like old lunch trays but ceramic and ‘fancy’). He actually loves and occasionally uses them … personally I tend to freak people out because I will just make a sanwich out of anything. Like mashed potatoes along with stuffing, turkey, cranbery sauce, etc …

    – We have a water filter as part of our fridge … and no we don’t change it when recommended! It is like $80, and lasts all of 3 months, so we change it a couple of times a year. Heck, the flow doesn’t even increase when we change it, so I know it isn’t clogged up!

    – Definitely get the lack of understanding of all of the ‘blog terms’ – my wife calls us cultists, that our weird little group of running and healthy eating buddies use these terms and have these habits that make no sense to anyone outside of the circle! haha

      I can totally picture those separator plates and those would have been perfect for me as a teenager! Now I love mushing everything together…Thanksgiving dinner foods are perfect for that!
      I really don’t notice the difference with the Brita either..so I can’t help but wonder if it even does anything. $80 is pretty steep to replace the filter every 3 months!
      And I guess we kind of are cultists in a way! I know that my family and friends think all of this is pretty strange!

    I LOVE thunderstorms, so I’m jealous you guys got some crazy ones earlier in the week (minus the whole tornado thing…tornadoes are one of my worst fears so you can keep those and send the rest to me)! I’ve been loving the cool weather we’ve had yesterday and today. Wish it would stay like this for good! And I typically mix most of my stuff together, unless I’m having a sandwich….then everything needs to stay separate. I’m not a crazy eater at all 😛

      I don’t mind thunderstorms when I’m inside and don’t have to go anywhere! Tornadoes are a completely different story:)

Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 mile MP/1 mile easy. I took a few hours of PTO in the morning to do this on the trail because I knew wouldn’t be able to do it this weekend. This was my first time on the trail since my marathon last November. It was nice to be back there and the perfect place to do this kind of long run. It was the kind of run where you start thinking “ok cool I just did a tough MP workout” but then you remember you actually need to run 26 miles in a row at that pace. Luckily there’s still 9 more weeks of training…although that doesn’t really sound like that much!
41 miles for the week and got in 2 strength sessions. Taking it easy this weekend other than chasing the kids around for all their activities! #run #marathontraining #longrun
It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It is a little frustrating to have to plan more time for an easy run. But it’s definitely worth it to recover quicker and feel better on workout days! #run #marathongtraining #easyrun
You know marathon training is starting to get real You know marathon training is starting to get real when you start losing track of what training week it is. I had to check my calendar but this was week 6, so 10 weeks to go! 

I ran the Charles Street 12 last weekend so this week was all about easy miles and recovering from the race. That went well until I went and ran all the hills yesterday followed by walking around a maze and fun park for 5 hours. I got in some strength and mobility this morning and now I’m back to focusing on recovery!

15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 9 15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 91% humidity 🫠 Pretty sure that was harder than my race last weekend, but got it done. Now off to my second workout of the day- taking the kids to an outdoor fun park. RIP to my legs.
