Review of Great Running Gear and Products I’ve been Using Lately

Over the past few months I’ve tried out a few new running-related products that I wanted to share. Some are for running and some are to help you run better. I love trying new gear and products but I can also be picky about what works for me. This is an honest review of running gear and products I have been using lately.

Review of Great Running Gear and Products I’ve been Using Lately

1. SoundPEATS POP Clip Wireless Open Ear Earbuds

For many years I ran with music and cycled through cheap pairs of over the ear headphones (with wires). Then I bought a couple pairs of expensive wireless headphones which I would lose or break. So now, I try to find a happy medium with headphones. I only occasionally run with headphones, so I don’t need anything too fancy.

Over the past few months I have been wearing SoundPEATS POP Clip Wireless Open Earbuds. These clip on to your ear (so they are not earbuds but they are also not the typical over ear headphones that go around your ear). They are only $30 on Amazon so I’m not terrified of losing or breaking them. They come in a rechargeable case and pair quickly to a phone or device.

These headphones are also waterproof, so I don’t worry about running with them in the rain or getting them soaked from my summer sweat. They can also connect to 2 devices, so I use them with both my laptop and my phone.

2. Nathan Pinnacle Pro 12L vest

It’s that time of year when I need to bring water on any run over an hour. I have a few handhelds, but its really nice to wear a vest and keep my hands free. I also like being able to store my phone and gels in a vest.

The Pinnacle Pro is Nathan’s new hydration vest that features a compression fit with a new quick-fit size system. It has easily adjustable sternum slider cords with tons of storage options (12 pockets) and a 1.6L insulated bladder. I’ve been using this for all my long runs this year and I barely notice I am wearing it! So far it’s held up really well on hot summer runs. Not only does it hold enough water, but it doesn’t feel heavy or make me feel any warmer than I already am.

3. Lumaflex Red Light Therapy Wrap

This spring I took the Foundations course to better understand the science behind red light therapy. It was really interesting to learn about all of the benefits and why this works. I was sent the Lumaflex Red Light Therapy Wrap and use it a few times a week.

It comes with 2 straps that are different sizes so it can be worn on different areas of the body. I typically use it on my low back, hips, and hamstrings. Once it is on I don’t even notice I am wearing it. After 10 minutes there is a little buzz/vibration and it shuts off.

Lumaflex Red Light Therapy

I typically wear the wrap on an area that is a trouble spot for me, but I do so along with other interventions such as mobility work. I do notice an improvement, but it’s hard to say if the red light therapy is making a difference or if it’s due to other things I am doing. For someone experiencing an injury it’s recommended to use red light therapy on the area up to 4 times a day. I hope I don’t need to test it out on a real injury, but it’s a good option to have!

4. Fuel Goods Box

Fuel goods is a website that allows you to purchase sports nutrition products and training gear- either samples or a full pack of most of the products. You can also set up a subscription to receive the same items every week, 2 weeks, month, or 2 months at a discounted price. I really like being able to try single items, such as a new gel.

There are also fuel packs put together, which are a mix of samples for a specific sport (such as the RunnerBox). It’s a really nice way to try different products that you may not have even known about or thought to try. Protein pretzels? I never would have even thought to look for these, but they were great to try!

5. Lagoon Pillow

A few months ago when I was really struggling with my sleep I decided I needed to upgrade my pillow. I don’t even know the last time I bought a pillow, which isn’t a good sign. I had been hearing about Lagoon pillows for awhile but was unsure about spending that kind of money on a pillow. However, I decided to give it a try.

On the first night I used it I had my highest sleep score ever! My watch data shows how much my sleep has improved. When I went to the beach a few weeks ago and didn’t have it I could really feel the difference.

    Ooooh. When I need to upgrade my pillow I am going to look at that one. When we bought our newish mattress, they included two memory foam, cooling pillows and my life hasn’t been the same. A good pillow can really change the world.

    I have a red light wrap too (it also has heat) and use it for my knee. I need to be more consistent though. I also have a red light on a stand which I try to use too. Again, I need to be more consistent.
    I can’t remember when I last bought a pillow so maybe I need to try the Lagoon pillow. I rarely sleep well and while I mostly blame my dogs a good pillow could really help.

Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far.  I get to do this. 

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

Yesterday’s long run was followed immediately by Yesterday’s long run was followed immediately by back to back kid activities, so there was no time to post about it. (I ate breakfast in the car and lunch at soccer practice- it was that kind of a day.) I was kind of nervous going in to this run, especially now that I’m getting down to last few key long runs. I had 16 miles with 4 x 2 miles on the plan, which sounded manageable but also challenging. The weather was perfect and I hit all my paces. At the end I got a little confused- thinking I was at 15 miles but I was actually at 14 🙃 Got home and realized I chafed really bad. Another long run down, and another week closer to race day.
