New Year, Same Old Workouts

Hello, and welcome to the first full week of the new year! Hopefully everyone has still stuck to their resolutions for 2016. If not, it’s a new week and there’s always a new chance to get started!

I’ve enjoyed getting started on my goals for the year; however, that will likely change when I am back to work (today) and faced with the typical stresses of daily life. I typed this from a standing workstation that I created for myself in my kitchen using this laptop stand that I got for Christmas. I also meal prepped for the week and got in a  walk and some push-ups!

standing workstation

Anyway, let’s go all the way back to 2105 and talk about the workouts from last week.

Monday: 35 minutes pure barre (Mile High Series 2)

pure barre

Tuesday: 3.3 mile run + core/glute exercises

Wednesday: Full body TRX workout

trx

Thursday: 5.2 mile run + pure bare tone in 10 (thighs and abs)

new years eve run

Friday: 7 miles following a modified version of Meredith’s negative split workout

new years day run

Walk: 1 mile, Push-ups: 25

Saturday: 5 miles with hills

hilly run

Walk: 3 miles, Push-ups: 30

Sunday: Rest

Walk: 2 miles, Push-ups: 30

Total: Run: 20.5 miles, Walk: 6 miles (since 1/1), Push-ups: 3 days

As you can see I started tracking my walking and push-ups. I’m using my vivofit to track my walking (based on miles tracked per day minus my running miles and 1 other mile for “standard steps” like walking around the house). Not sure if that makes sense, but it’s working for now!

I had  a really productive weekend and I feel very prepared to head into a new week. If only this level of motivation and organization could continue throughout the rest of the year!

How were your workouts last week?
Have you gotten started on your goals for the new year?

My sister swears by a stand up desk she uses all day at work. I know my hips would appreciate one. I worked over the weekend to get some year end tasks finished. So, my motivation is pretty good today as I have a nice clean desk to go to. My goal is to keep it that way until leaving for Disney later this week. I’ve never logged my walking miles, but I should. I have a new Garmin 225 coming that can be used as an activity tracker. I think I’ll give up the Fitbit and just wear that. I’m in awe of your push ups. No can do! Thanks for linking with us Lisa! Happy New Year!

I don’t know if I could handle standing all day, but I think it would be nice to be able to alternate between sitting and standing!

I had high hopes of starting the new yr off w some good runs and I haven’t done that yet. I didn’t end up feeling good and it was too cold out to run outside. Luckily I did manage a few miles on the treadmill. You have a great mix of workouts. I need to start incorporating other workouts other than running.

LISA!! In the Wednesday pic is your iPad propped against the door handle?! I feel so nervous for it! 😀 It does look like it provides the perfect heigh for following along with video workouts though!

I am feeling motivated for this week! I got terrible sleep last night and I know I’ll be exhausted by the time I get home tonight but I am hopeful that means I’ll go to bed early and get back on a good sleeping schedule starting tonight!

I love the idea of a standing desk! Looks like you created a great one for yourself. Only 1 run so far this year. Battling some post marathon tendonitis. Going at it again today. Signed up for 2,016 miles in 2016. Easing into Whole30 this week. Practicing really. First timer over here. The meal planning is overwhelming me right now. Did great this am but ordered a chai tea and they gave me a latte. :-/ I expect it’s going to be one of those weeks. Sigh…..

I’m really happy to be running again and I feel like I have this renewed appreciation for everything. When my back hurt last week, I couldn’t help but be so scared that it would never heal. And I’ve been eating veggies and fruit every single day for the past 3 days and I swear to you that it has nothing to do with January 1st. It just so happens that that’s the day I started making changes! I meal prepped and chopped veggies yesterday and it’s all ready for the week. I feel really good! You have helped me with all this. Thank you!

I love that you have a laptop stand, I wish we could get those at my work! I only worked out Monday and Tuesday last week since my best friend and her husband came to DC for New Years, so I haven’t exactly been eating well or working out the last five days. Waking up early was really tough today, but I made it to the gym for a sweat session, and am back on track with my healthy eating habits!

Motivation is low over here. I didn’t sleep so hot the past few nights. I feel like I need a good nights sleep or two to really get back on track. I have so much I want to get started on.

Also, in your Wednesday pic, I am so nervous for your iPad on the door…or maybe it’s secured & I just can’t see it!?

    • [email protected] says

      January 4, 2016 at 7:46 pm

Nope its not really secured but it fit snuggly between the handle and the door and didnt move at all! I was nervous at first but it really stayed in place well and it was the only place where i could see it while I used the TRX.
I hope you can get caught up on sleep and can get back not track!

    • [email protected] says

      January 4, 2016 at 7:47 pm

I think the studio classes are harder but they are also longer than the DVDs I have. I feel like it does a good enough job for the price since barre studios can be so expensive. For me its just a good way to get in a different type of workout!

  24. Jennifer @ Running on Lentils says

    January 4, 2016 at 1:24 pm

I’ve always wanted to try barre workouts but didn’t want to pay the expensive class fees. Maybe I should try that DVD! Do you have to have the TRX system or any special equipment to do it?

    • [email protected] says

      January 4, 2016 at 7:48 pm

There are alot of different barre DVD options, and some videos require a ball and/or weights but some don’t require any equipment. There are lots of options you can try without any equipment to see if you like it!

I have done a few YouTube barre videos that I like, but haven’t purchased one yet! Your goals for 2016 look great and I am keeping my fingers crossed you get that BQ, I think you can do it!!

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
