Weekly Recap and Arkansas Weekend

I’m writing this post as I am on my way back from a great weekend in Arkansas! We flew out on Friday to spend the weekend celebrating our niece’s first birthday (which is on Tuesday) and her Baptism!

baptism

She got to try cake for the first time, and I think she liked it.

cake

We also got to do some running while we were out there (one of my favorite things about the area is the perfect running trail right up the street from my SIL’s house). arkansas running

Soon it will be back to reality, until I go away again in 4 days! So for now, here is how my week of workouts looked.

weekly workout recap

Monday: 5.1 miles with hill repeats, core/hip exercises. It was raining, so I wore a hat, but then my headlamp wasn’t bright enough. I ended up wrapping it around my hand which helped a little but obviously the light moved around a lot as I swung my arms!

monday

Tuesday: 3.2 miles easy, CXWORX on YouTube

Wednesday: 5.75 miles with 4 @ 7:30 pace, core work
tempo

Thursday: Strength training, 30 minutes yoga

dead lifts

Friday: 4 easy miles plus core and hip exercises. It was 65 degrees and humid! I was sweating in shorts and a long-sleeved T-shirt.

friday

Saturday: 7 miles on the Lake Fayetteville Trail in Arkansas with Rob

running

Sunday: 4 miles on the trail before heading to the airport

Total: 29.06 miles

Walked: 18.3    Push-ups: 4 days

Yearly Total: 574

It’s nice to get in a Sunday run when traveling, because then I make Monday a rest day. I wouldn’t have been too excited to run back in Baltimore where it’s supposed to be cold and windy.

Do you know how old you were when you first ate sugar/cake?

Do you like to run when you travel, or do you try to relax as much as possible?

Do you wear a headlamp and baseball cap at the same time when it rains? Have you figured out how to do this without the cap blocking the light?

she’s so cute with the cake! my first word was supposedly yum yum after being given a cookie so I will assume I was given dessert and cake very young lol. it’s so cold here!

Hahah that is a great first word! I am really not happy about the cold front moving through here tonight.

I haven’t figured out the headlamp hat thing so it’s one or the other! There are some long runs I need both but I’ll usually go without the hat! Weather looks nice, even if cold!

    • [email protected] says

      April 4, 2016 at 7:19 pm

I think I would skip the hat too! Better to be able to see, especially since I’ll get wet in the rain anyway.

Ah, what a fun weekend. That’s so great that they live so close to a trail, major win! I always love to run when I travel because it’s new scenery and a great way for me to check out new places. I’ll usually just stick with a hat when it rains.

The trail is perfect! Gives us a chance to explore without risking getting lost:)

Your niece is so adorable! I usually don’t run when I travel, but will try to exercise at the hotel gym or go on long walks. I always wear my visor if it’s raining but have never ran with a headlamp before. I’m so not looking forward to this colder weather that’s about to hit DC–it’s making me miss Cabo!!

I bet it’s tough to come back from the warmth to the colder temps!

  7. Kristina says

    April 4, 2016 at 8:12 am

66 and humid actually doesn’t sound too bad to me since we’re back in the mid to upper 80s (and always humid) here. I was looking through my training log from earlier this year last night and realized I definitely took our cooler weather for granted in Jan/Feb!

How do you get pics of you running? Like the one of you and Rob together? I keep seeing so many cool running shots on Instagram and I can’t figure out how everyone gets them! Do you setup your camera on auto somewhere and then just run by it?

    • [email protected] says

      April 4, 2016 at 7:06 pm

So the one of Rob and I was actually taken by my sister who happened to drive by with my mom when we were finishing up our run! Usually I just set the timer and run by or do a video and then take a picture of a frame. It’s never perfect but sometimes I get lucky!

I just love that dress you wore for the baptism!

I like to run when I travel–I like exploring new places. But I don’t run in a baseball cap, so I’ve never had the headlamp issue!

    • [email protected] says

      April 4, 2016 at 7:07 pm

Thank you! I only run in a baseball cap when it rains, so I don’t usually run into this problem.

    April 4, 2016 at 8:46 am

When I travel I like to at least get one or two runs in but it’s always no pressure. I know sometimes food and drink or late nights are involved and sleeping in is a luxury which is part of the vacation relaxation.

    • [email protected] says

      April 4, 2016 at 7:09 pm

So true! I think for me it depends on the type of vacation. Last weekend we ate pretty well and went to bed early so I was more than ready for a run each morning.

  11. Laura @ This Runner's Recipes says

    April 4, 2016 at 9:35 am

Your niece is so precious! I like to run when traveling but usually end up running on the treadmill early before the day gets going. I’m not used to city running (East Seattle is all paved, gravel, or dirt trails), so the treadmill just feels safer on travel if I’m in an urban area.

    • [email protected] says

      April 4, 2016 at 7:10 pm

City running can definitely be tricky if you’re not familiar with the area. The trail in Arkansas is perfect because it’s a paved 6 mile loop!

  12. Jennifer @ Dashing in Style says

    April 4, 2016 at 9:50 am

Your niece is adorable! I struggle with how to handle a headlamp and hat when it’s raining too. It’s a bit awkward, but I put my headlamp on under the hat so that it sits high on my forehead and then push the hat up a bit. Not perfect, but I’ve also tried wrapping it around my hand and also wearing it like a necklace and those didn’t work so well. The challenges of early morning, rainy runs!

    • [email protected] says

      April 4, 2016 at 7:10 pm

Maybe I will try putting my headlamp under my hat next time! Thanks for the idea!

  13. Suzy says

    April 4, 2016 at 9:57 am

I haven’t used a headlamp in years but I remember having the same problem as I used to always wear a hat when running so it messed me up when I needed the light. Great job on that week last week. This won’t come as a surprise to you but I run when I’m on vacation! Running is FUN! So taking a break from it would be very sad. We booked a Mexico trip and I’ll be hitting the treadmill every morning before the Coronas! Wahoo!

Now that I’m streaking, I have a feeling I’m gonna be running in a lot of new places over the next few months! As always thanks for linking up! Happy one year to your niece! I’m guessing I started young with the cake/sugar because of my major sweet tooth! I try to run or get some kind of exercise in when I’m traveling. I think running is the most convenient while traveling if you don’t have a gym.

Nice work with the 4 at 7:30 pace! Both of my girls had a little bit of sugar at their 1st party, but no more until they were 2. I know my mom was not that strict. She has ‘ice cream’ listed as one of my favorite foods at 12 months!

Pretty solid week of training here! good job !
I used a hat with a headlamp once, but it was a short rim hat. Also, my headlap tilts up, so I had no problems with visibility.
I don’t remember the first time I had sugar, but there is a picture of me hogging a bottle of Coke around the age of 3, a habit that took me about 30 years to give up.

Great job with the vacation trail running! When I go on vacation, I usually have to run alone and I actually hate exploring a new area alone. I like to stick to what I know unless I’ve got company. I wish I was more of a risk-taker but it’ll be awhile before that habit changes.

    • [email protected] says

      April 5, 2016 at 5:27 pm

Even though Rob and I don’t really run together at home it’s nice that I have someone to run with when we are away! It also makes me a little nervous to run in places I am not familiar with by myself.

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
